Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice
The basic objective of Sociology and Anthropology studies is to provide courses and course material which will aid in the understanding of human life in all of its manifestations, for both those interested in a career in the social sciences, and those interested in rounding out their liberal arts education. The basic tenet of Sociology and Anthropology studies is that a person is by nature a social creature and that any total understanding of human behavior and experience must include the social and cultural milieu which affects all peoples.
The offerings are thus geared to show: The socio-cultural environment of humans;
How a person adapts and adjusts to this environment;
How humans interact with each other and become a part of social life; and
The social structures and systems which are constructed to perpetuate this social life. Therefore individuals are seen not only in their personal or historical dimensions, but also as they actually exist, inextricably bound to others and their surroundings.

About Our Programs Sociology is the systematic study of the social behavior of individuals as well as the working of social groups, organizations, cultures and societies. Study in sociology provides a scientific perspective for studying the effects of cultural and social forces on individuals, groups, and institutions. Students who major in sociology are given the opportunity to study in the field of family and gender relations, crime and delinquency, as well as sociological theory, research methodology, and statistics. Graduates are prepared for positions in industry, government, private and public agencies, and in education and research organizations. Sociology is an especially important major or minor for students entering any of the helping professions. For those who wish to become professional sociologists, an excellent preparation for graduate school is available. Students selecting the Human Services major typically desire positions in institutions, private and public, which provide direct services to disadvantaged groups in our society. Graduates may expect to work in a wide variety of settings, ranging from nursery schools to nursing homes. They will be confronting the human consequences of problems such as crime, poverty, alcoholism, child abuse, and discrimination. The curriculum includes required and elective courses, advising, and a supervised field experience in one or more human service agencies. Graduates will also have the choice of pursuing advanced study in fields such as social work, administration, counseling, psychology, and sociology.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is a dual discipline department united by a common goal, that of understanding what people do. South Florida, a multilingual, culturally pluralistic metropolis with extensive international connections, is a living laboratory for faculty and students alike to pursue this goal. We offer a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Anthropology, and Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Comparative Sociology. We teach courses in ethnic and racial minorities, comparative gender studies, social problems, marriage and the family, human sexuality, cultural ecology, quantitative and qualitative research methods, as well as introductory anthropology and sociology. We offer an excellent education in both job skills and in those required for forceful citizenship. Our graduate degrees emphasize social theory, research methodology, cultural analysis, ethnicity and immigration, family and gender, international development, and medical sociology. Graduate students come to us from all over the world: students have come from countries as distinct as Argentina, Bahamas, Brazil, Bulgaria, Colombia, China, Haiti, Iran, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Jordan, Macedonia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Puerto Rico and Russia.
