Social Anthropology
You are here: UKC home studying undergrad subjects This full-time programme is taught within the Department of Anthropology . You can also study this programme on a part-time basis. Social Anthropology studies human societies and culture. Although a lot of its theory is similar to other social sciences it is different in the methods it uses to research and the objects of that research. Social Anthropology is stereotyped as being obsessed with primitive people, but although it does study small-scale societies in the Third World one of the hallmarks of the subject at Kent is that it covers both industrial and non-industrial societies. Our programme in Social Anthropology was judged excellent in teaching quality by the Higher Education Funding Council and our research was rated at 5 (out of 5*) in the 2001 national Research Assessment Exercise. http://www.ucl.ac.uk/Anthropology/socialanth/socialanth_home.htm
At its most basic, socio-cultural anthropology is the study of the cultural symbols and social processes humans use to relate to their world, and give it meaning,  and how these change through time.  No longer exclusively focused on  the non-western world, today anthropologists are as apt to study the rituals of Parliament as they are the rites of passage practised by pastoral nomads.  The study of  social and cultural change might equally include research about the Internet and soap operas,  ethnic cleansing in Bosnia, or child warriors in Africa. In the context of increasing globalisation, social anthropology’s disciplinary commitment to comparative social analysis makes it particularly well-placed to understand the interaction between local cultural systems and the wider world.  As a result, anthropologists are regularly called upon to  work with local communities, private firms, the media, governmental and non-governmental organisations, and international agencies as social advisors and project consultants. Training is provided at all levels, as part of the

Social Anthropology
Sociology Social Anthropology Demography Human culture and its global system is made up of differences The objective of anthropological research is to systematically examine and compare these differences. Because of this, the objective of the anthropologist is to familiarise himself with as many different cultures as possible. Anthropological research is often based on extensive fieldwork that is conducted in a different cultural environment. In this manner the researcher can then build up an expertise in the environment that he is working in. Research, however, should not only be limited to one geographical area or community, but should be comprised of broad ethnographic comparisons. The underlying objective of teaching social anthropology is to develop in students, an ability to examine and understand social life on a micro and global level. This is achieved by utilising a perspective that is both comparative and grounded in social science and one that can ensure that the researcher extends beyond previous experience. Teaching in social anthropology emphasises the field's research traditions. By retaining these traditions, contemporary anthropology can address the central questions concerning culture and society posed by researchers today. Teaching in social anthropology also aims to provide students with a command of the methodology of sociological research. These methods are beneficial to the researcher, and in many fields of working life.

Norwegian social anthropology has its roots in the British school, but is also influenced by American and French anthropological traditions. The American orientation towards archaeology, physical anthropology and comparative linguistics is, however, lacking. In the branch of social anthropology taught and practised at the University of Oslo, comparative studies of society and culture as total and interlocking, if not rigid or static systems, are carried out through intensive field work and other (mainly qualitative) methods.
