ANTHROPOLOGY Anthropology is the study of human beings ('anthropos' is Greek for 'man'). It is a broad topic covering a huge variety of fields. It is usually divided into Biological and Socio-cultural Anthropology. I have studied both. My personal interests are found in the application of anthropology to health as in Medical Anthropology, Biosocial studies etc. Anthropology, the study of all aspects of human life and culture.
It examines such topics as how people live, what they think, what they produce, and how they interact with their environments.
Anthropologists try to understand the full range of human diversity as well as what all people share in common.
Anthropologists ask such basic questions as: When, where, and how did humans evolve? How do people adapt to different environments?
How have societies developed and changed from the ancient past to the present?
live in the future.
Much of the work of anthropologists is based on three key concepts:
society, culture, and evolution. Together, these concepts constitute the
primary ways in which anthropologists describe, explain, and understand

The Department of Social Anthropology has since its inception in the early 1960s had a strong tradition for research on man-environment interactions. This research tradition has in particular sought to capture the interaction between quantifiable variables in the physical environment and the human conceptualisation of, and interaction with this environment. This research has been inspired strongly by natural science approaches in disciplines like animal and plant ecology, by social sciences like economy, and by theories of science in the tradition from Popper to Putnam. In its empirical approach this research covers the broad variations of human ecological adaptations from hunters in arctic areas to African nomadic societies, from irrigation agriculture in Pakistan to fisheries in Melanesia.
This research has to a large extent involved cooperation with students and staffs from several different countries, from the Sudan and Ethiopia to Nepal and Bangladesh. The Department has recently established a M.Phil. degree in Social Anthropology with emphasis on Human Ecology.

SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY The anthropological perspective focuses on the region's interethnic dynamics as they unfold between peoples of Sámi, Norwegian and Finnish origins. It relates historical processes of mutual adaptations, as well as changing governmental policies, to the present manifestations of cultural variations and ethnic revitalisation. A central part of the presentation is devoted to the period of more than hundred years, from the middle of the last century to the middle of the present, when the Sámi people (as well as the Kvens) were subjected to a general policy of assimilation which alienated a large part of these peoples from their cultural heritage. The cultural and ethnic revitalisation now taking place signifies a major change in the ethnic relationship, from a minority position towards one of equity.
The anthropological contribution situates the region`s ethnic and cultural characteristics within the context of Norway's general national ethos of class and regional equality and questions its ability to conceptualise cultural pluralism as a premise for a diversified governmental structure. A milestone in the development towards governmental diversification is the establishment of the Saami Parliament (1989). The issue of indigenous rights for the Sámi population to parts of the region's resource base is at the fore of the Parliament's present concerns. This question also provokes tensions between Sámi and Norwegians as well as among Sámi which seemed to have been extinguished. The course provides background information of this situation.
