Dag, Gregg, Mike and Al (Paulson) joined together for the first time to make beautiful racket in a cozy Park Ridge, Illinois basement. Mike was probably late, Dag was probably too loud, Gregg drove a LeCar (no kidding) and Al wore a muscle t-shirt with a giant eagle emblazoned on it. These slugs were destined join together as a band. GLOSSARY

Snails and slugs are among the most bothersome pests in many garden and landscape situations. The brown garden snail (Helix aspersa), is the common snail causing problems in California gardens; it was introduced from France during the 1850s for use as food. Several species of slugs are frequently damaging, including the gray garden slug (Peroceras reticulatum), the banded slug (Limax poirieri), and the greenhouse slug (Milax gagates). Both snails and slugs are members of the mollusk phylum and are similar in structure and biology, except slugs lack the snail's external spiral shell. IDENTIFICATION AND BIOLOGY Snails and slugs move by gliding along on a muscular "foot." This muscle constantly secretes mucus, which later dries to form the silvery "slime trail" that signals the presence of these pests. Adult brown garden snails lay about 80 spherical, pearly white eggs at a time into a hole in the topsoil. They may lay eggs up to six times a year. It takes about 2 years for snails to mature. Slugs reach maturity in about a year. Snails and slugs are most active at night and on cloudy or foggy days. On sunny days they seek hiding places out of the heat and sun; often the only clues to their presence are their silvery trails and plant damage. In mild-winter areas such as in southern California and in coastal locations, young snails and slugs are active throughout the year.

Slug control
One of the newest non-toxic treatments is a slug bait made by Safer's; it's well worth checking out. Other methods include using copper wire to surround plants and/or pots. Copper acts as a barrier which slugs will not cross. Of course, you have to be sure there are no slugs napping in your potted plants already. It works well for newly potted plants for that reason. Copper slug barriers can be bought at most garden centers. Sometimes young seedlings can best be protected by placing a barrier of crushed eggshells around them. Slugs travel on a soft foot coated with mucus and the sharp edges of eggshells can deter their passage. Various traps and bait can be used too.
Slug traps
According to Field Guide to the Slug some of the best slug traps use beer. The traps are made from plastic margarine tubs or sour cream containers, "the depth of which makes it harder for satiated slugs to escape." Cut a few one-inch square or triangular doors into the container sides and use the lid to deflect rain and prevent dilution of the beer. Position the holes just below the container rim and dig the container into the soil, leaving the cut holes at or just slightly above soil level. It's the scent of malt and yeast that attracts the voracious creatures. Adding a dash of baker's yeast makes a beer trap more effective. For a less expensive effective substitute for the beer, a mixture of yeast, flour and water can be used.

HYG-2010-95
David J. Shetlar Slugs are simply snails (mollusks) without shells. These slimy creatures live in and on the ground and have big appetites for a wide variety of plants found around the home. Young seedling plants are eaten as well as mature plants. They frequently cause damage to glasshouse (greenhouse) and garden plants, and may be especially injurious in mushroom houses. Occasionally, they may congregate in large numbers in basements, on walls, doorways, and along walkways, making these areas unsightly. Slugs may be found when the ground thaws in the spring until it freezes in the fall. Wet conditions are ideal for slug development.
Description of Slugs
Probably the best description of a slug is that it is a snail without a shell. They vary in size depending upon the species and measure from 1/4 to seven inches long. They secrete a characteristic slime (mucus) which they leave behind as they move around. These slime trails are silvery in appearance upon drying and is a common diagnostic character used to identify the presence of slugs. The color of slugs also varies with species, ranging from a dark black-brown to an orange color. When an actual slug is found their soft slimy bodies and extensible eye stalks give the creature its characteristic appearance. The most common slugs found in Ohio landscapes are the gray garden slug, the leopard slug, and the dusky slug. The gray garden slug is the most common and is generally a mottled gray to black in color. It is usually less than one inch long. The leopard slug is the largest, commonly reaching four to five inches in length. It has characteristic black spots on its upper surface. The dusky slug is intermediate in size, being one to three inches long, and can range from a gray to a bright orange in color.

Snails and slugs prefer decaf
By Bill Davis Special to CNN (CNN) Morning coffee won't pick up a snail's pace. In fact, caffeine may be poisonous to slugs and snails a finding that may lead to the development of more environmentally friendly pesticides, researchers said Wednesday. A study in this week's issue of the journal Nature found that slugs and snails are killed when sprayed with a caffeine solution, and that spraying plants with this solution may prevent the slimy mollusks from eating them. Scientists in Hawaii came upon the results almost by accident. "We were looking for a solution for frogs," said Earl Campbell of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Honolulu. Campbell and colleagues were testing caffeine sprays to control coqui frogs, a problematic invasive species, when they noticed snails and slugs were also affected by caffeine. Researchers found that when they sprayed an area of soil with a 2 percent caffeine solution, slugs and snails would either crawl away from the treated ground or die.
