Primates in peril, except for one species
August 28, 1997
Web posted at: 7:21 p.m. EDT (2321 GMT) WASHINGTON (AP) Hunting and the steady loss of forests have made primates the most imperiled group of mammals on the planet. Only one species of primates is increasing in numbers: humans. Nearly half of the 235 primates, including chimpanzees the human's closest evolutionary relative are threatened with extinction. Another 20 percent are approaching that status, said a report published Thursday by Worldwatch Institute. "In general, the reasons for the declines are no mystery: they all relate, directly or indirectly, to human actions," said the report entitled "Death in the Family Tree." It spotlighted a number of "hotspots" around the world where forest loss has resulted in high concentrations of endangered primates. These include southeast Asia, equatorial Africa, Madagascar, and southeastern Brazil. "The fate of these forests will largely determine the fate of most primates, and more and more of these forests are losing their ecological integrity as they are logged, colonized and cleared for agriculture," the article said. In south and east Asia, nine-tenths of all primates are facing extinction. In Indonesia and Malaysia, orangutans the ape most dependent on trees have lost 80 percent of their forests in the past two decades.

New Study Supports Idea That Primates, Dinosaurs Coexisted By Ben Harder
for National Geographic News
April 18, 2002
Scientists have acquired new data supporting the idea that the last ancestor shared by all living primates walked with the dinosaurs more than 80 million years ago. The results came from a new technique used to reconstruct the course of animal evolution.
Previously, opposing scientific camps estimated that the animal that gave rise to the primates lived as recently as 55 million years ago and as long ago as 90 million years. The newly proposed date is closer to the older end of the range. View Photo Gallery >>
Primate Ancestor?

Using an innovative method of evolutionary analysis, scientists at the Field Museum in Chicago estimated that the last common ancestor of all primates lived 81.5 million years ago. As in this artist's rendition, it may have been a small, nocturnal creature that inhabited tropical forests. Illustration by Nancy Klaud, courtesy of the Field Museum

Extinction Risk for 1 in 3 Primates, Study Says National Geographic News
October 8, 2002
One in every three of the world's apes, monkeys, lemurs, and other primates is now endangered with extinction, according to a report released this week by Conservation International (CI) and the Primate Specialist Group of the World Conservation Union (IUCN). Primate species and sub-species classified as "critically endangered" and "endangered" jumped nearly two-thirds from 120 to 195 since the initial report was issued in January 2000. Asia now accounts for almost half of the world's most endangered primates, with 11 listed in the top 25, including six that are new additions. Africa (eight), central and South America (three), and Madagascar (three) are home to the other primates on the list. These include the Sumatran orangutan of Indonesia, the mountain gorilla of Africa, and northern muriqui of Brazil. The Natuna banded leaf monkey, (

The primates belong to the class Mammalia. They show all of the normal features of mammals, including hair and mammary glands for nursing the young. They are endothermic, have vertebrae and a skeleton, and are segmented deuterosomes, with a coelom made from an outgrowth of the digestive tract. Primates are eutherians, meaning that they have a placenta that provides a more intimate relationship between mother and child while the mother nurses the child. Eutherians are also the mammals with the longest relationship between mother and young. The above features make the animals of the order Primates also eutherians, mammals, vertebrates, and chordates. There are 13 families in the order Primates. You can click to learn about family Homonidae, the family that humans belong to. Below are the other twelve families, divided into two suborders. A canopy of trees and vines grow throughout the atrium where guests can visit a group of chimpanzees or black and white colobus monkeys. It is also in the atrium where one of Fort Worth's gorilla groups, made up of two females and a silverback male, can be observed.
As visitors exit the atrium, they are led to a winding boardwalk from which they can view many other fascinating primates.
Among them are orangutans, including a young male who can often be seen clinging to his mother. As guests round the corner they encounter brightly-colored mandrills with blue and red faces. A group of white-cheeked gibbons also reside here and amaze visitors with their agility as they swing throughout their exhibit using only their long arms. It is also outside where guests can visit another gorilla group made up of a silverback male, a younger blackback male, and two females.
