Population, Urban and Rural Geography Staff I Undergraduate Papers I Graduate Papers I Staff Publications The Department of Geography at the University of Waikato has had a strong interest in Population and Urban Geography from its earliest days and has played a major role in developing the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences as New Zealand’s leading centre for teaching and research in international migration and population studies. In 1979 the University established a Population Studies Centre in the Faculty and students interested in Population and Urban Geography may strengthen their degrees in this field by taking some of the papers co-ordinated by the staff of the Population Studies Centre. The population and urban papers taught in the Department of Geography have always emphasized the interdisciplinary and applied nature of population and urban studies and have sought to balance important international and local perspectives. The Department of Geography has major strengths in international migration studies and has been very successful in securing competitive research funding in this field from the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST), Asia 2000, the Health Research Council and the New Zealand Immigration Service. An international migration research group has two full-time research fellows and a number of part-time research assistants. There are opportunities for students to be employed as temporary research assistants from time to time.

Demographic Data Base
Centre for Population Studies
Research Policy The Centre for Population Studies (CPS) was formed on July 1, 1990, as an integral part of the Demographic Data Base (DDB). Its main objective is to develop research on the material computerized by the DDB, and to stimulate national and international research on the DDB material, where possible within a multi-disciplinary context. The CPS will seek to promote research by disciplines, such as sociology, demography, statistics, epidemiology and human genetics. An international Advisory Board for the CPS has been appointed, whose main role is to contribute to the further development of the DDB as an important international research centre. The Board advises the DDB management on research matters and functions as an ambassador for the DDB, and its products. The CPS research policy is to promote new research based on the DDB database and to focus resources on important research fields. It will also promote the creation of a number of visiting research positions and scholarships at the CPS in order to encourage a wider use of the DDB research material. The research policy will be submitted to relevant political bodies and research councils. It provides the framework for the formulation of new research projects. The CPS will seek to promote new research in the following areas:

End of Page The Fraud of Malthusianism Site Map Overview Page The worst evils against human dignity and national sovereignty cover themselves as ``population policies'' and ``expert population studies.'' Such ``population studies,'' by bodies like the U.S. National Security Council, have justified mass sterilizations, forced abortions, and even wars against Third World nations. The U.N.'s ongoing series of world government conferences including the Cairo International Conference on Population and Development, wanted to reduce the human population by half in 100 years. Where did this diabolical ``field of expertise'' come from? Encyclopedias and histories of the so-called ``science of demography,'' agree that it was primarily the invention of Sir William Petty, Britain's first Earl of Shelburne (1622-1687). The Galton Laboratory in London, world center since the 1920s of the notorious eugenics movementfor ``scientific improvement of populations''emphatically asserted in 1931 published lectures, that Petty founded ``population studies'' along with his friends Sir John Graunt, lord mayor of London, and Sir Edmund Halley. This was at the time of the chartering of the British Royal Society, of which all three were charter members. Its founding was based on a plan by Petty, which immediately became the European center of ``population statistics'' from the 1660s onward.

Our cancer center serves a population that is ethnically, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse. Within this setting, Program investigators are conducting studies designed to investigate not only the etiology but also the prevention and control of cancer. We are fortunate to have a high quality Surveillance, Epidemiology Cancer Information Service that provide baseline information for a wide variety of multidisciplinary descriptive and analytic studies.
Because much of the research within this Program is transdisciplinary, it brings together faculty with a variety of expertise and interests. The core group of public health scientists is supplemented by faculty from the WSU Departments of Gastroenterology, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Nursing, Nutrition and Food Science, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pathology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience, Surgery, and the Center for Urban Labor and Metropolitan Affairs, all of whom are represented within this Program.
The main areas of our research include:
    • Etiology Studies of cancers that focus on: Cancer Prevention studies based on existing knowledge of the modifiable risk factors for cancer, with major efforts in areas of:

    50. MSSL Extragalactic Astronomy - Population Studies
General description of population studies, including optical and Xray continuumwork, optical/UV emission line studies and other miscellaneous extras.
    http://www.mssl.ucl.ac.uk/www_astro/agn/agn_rixos.html
Population Studies of Active Galactic Nuclei Active Galactic Nuclei (or `AGN') are the most distant and luminous phenomena in the Universe. The essential properties of Seyfert 1 nuclei and quasars may be found in our Beginner's Guide to AGN This page very briefly describes recent work on AGN discovered as part of `RIXOS'; the `ROSAT International X-ray/Optical Survey'. These are relatively faint X-ray emitting AGN (Seyfert 1s to 1.9s and quasars), spanning redshifts from 0.1 to 3.4. We have measured the X-ray and optical continuum slopes and luminosities for this sample (about 160 objects); we have also derived the parameters of UV and optical emission lines, including luminosities, equivalent widths (EWs) and full widths at half maximum (FWHM).
    Optical to X-ray continuum.
We find that the optical and X-ray slopes are anti-correlated, ie. they rise and fall towards the EUV together; also when the X-ray slope is soft, the optical to X-ray flux ratio is high and vice-versa. This is consistent with the effects of absorption by a cold, dusty gas and we estimate that for the sample as a whole, the RIXOS AGN have a range of absorbing column densities from to 3e21 /cm^2.This gas must lie beyond the broad line region , and a possible source for it is in the molecular torus . Full details are published in Puchnarewicz et al (1996), Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, volume 281, page 1243.

Our research into the early programming of chronic disease offers the prospect of novel strategies to prevent cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis by improving fetal and infant nutrition. Sufficient is now known to implement policies which improve fetal growth by protecting the nutrition and growth of girls and young women, with emphasis on the avoidance of obesity or excessive thinness, and access to a balanced diet. Protection of infant nutrition and growth is also important.

  • We need to know more about the way in which programmed changes in physiology and metabolism alter susceptibility to adverse influences such as obesity, high-energy diets and poverty in childhood and adult life. We are addressing this in studies based on population samples totalling 150,000 people in Britain ( Hertfordshire Sheffield Motherwell Finland ... India and China We need to understand how a mother’s body composition and diet influence the development of risk factors in her offspring. We have shown that the offspring of mothers who are thin or overweight are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Maternal thinness is linked to insulin resistance in the offspring, while the offspring of overweight mothers tend to be insulin-deficient.

Fish Population Studies BEFORE INSTITUTING a successful fish stocking program in an established fishery, you must first analyze the aquatic environment of your pond. Jones Fish and Lake Management has the expertise to quantify existing fish populations in lakes or ponds using a unique method called electrofishing. Electrofishing is one of the most accurate survey methods available, and causes little harm or undue stress to fish and their surrounding environment. If you are interested in conducting a survey of your lake or pond, call us today for an estimate and to arrange an appointment.
A population study will provide us with the data to:
    • Identify fish species present, relative abundance, growth rates, and general health of the fish and fish populations.
    • Determine whether harmful diseases are present.
    • Identify an overpopulation or underpopulation of fish species.
    • Identify overall lake ecology and problems that are not yet evident.
From this information we will develop a custom fish stocking and management program to provide you with the following benefits:
    • Increased fish size, numbers, and overall productivity of your lake/pond.

MRC funded research has shown that the injection of a simple and affordable anti-convulsant drug could halve the risk of a major pregnancy complication that accounts for the deaths of over 50,000 mothers and unborn babies a year worldwide. The trial is a step forward in the prevention of eclamptic seizures, which remain a major killer of mothers and babies, especially in developing countries, where full blown eclampsia is more common. Even in the developed world pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are major causes of maternal death, prematurity and stillbirth. For example in the UK, where eclampsia only affects one pregnant woman in 2,000, pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are responsible for 15 percent of maternal deaths.
