Cognitive Science
Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of mind and intelligence, embracing philosophy, psychology, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, linguistics, and anthropology. Its intellectual origins are in the mid-1950s when researchers in several fields began to develop theories of mind based on complex representations and computational procedures. Its organizational origins are in the mid-1970s when the Cognitive Science Society was formed and the journal Cognitive Science began. Since then, more than sixty universities in North America and Europe have established cognitive science programs and many others have instituted courses in cognitive science.
1. History
2. Representation and Computation
The central hypothesis of cognitive science is that thinking can best be understood in terms of representational structures in the mind and computational procedures that operate on those structures. While there is much disagreement about the nature of the representations and computations that constitute thinking, the central hypothesis is general enough to encompass the current range of thinking in cognitive science, including connectionist theories which model thinking using artificial neural networks.

and the students and scholars who have either visited it in Florence or have had reason to come to its Homepage. There is no attempt to provide a full listing of internet resources for the history of science or its many sister disciplines; it is hoped that the sources indicated will give access to that wider world. The Istituto is one of the main centers for those disciplines in Italy and Europe, and it provides several on-line services, including this one. The Museo has an important, specialized collection of scientific instruments and artifacts. Emphasized here, then, are Italian and European sites with related activities or interests. Emphasized also are sites which are the result of concerted efforts on the part of their designers to explore the use of the internet for serious research and teaching, wherever they may be in the world. 52. History And Philosophy Of Science
History and philosophy of science offers an academic path for students who wish tocombine serious work in the sciences with the humanities and social sciences
http://www.stanford.edu/dept/HPS/index2.html
H Most students concentrating in the history of science come to the colloquia series held bi-monthly on topics about issues and recent developments in the fields of history and philosophy of science. Senior theses are encouraged but not required. At present, students may concentrate on history of science in a variety of ways. History majors may select a thematic concentration in the new history and science major ; philosophy majors may also elect to complete the special sub-major in history and philosophy of science in the Philosophy department ; Thematic concentrations in history of science and technology or history and philosophy of science are also possible within the Program in Science, Technology and Society (STS). Finally, with the assistance of the faculty, interested students can assemble an individually-designed major. Minnesota Studies in the Philosophy of Science is the world's longest running and best known series devoted exclusively to the philosophy of science. Edited by members of the Minnesota Center for the Philosophy of Science (MCPS) since 1956, the series brings together original articles by leading workers in the philosophy of science. The fifteen existing volumes cover topics ranging from the philosophy of psychology and the structure of space and time to the nature of scientific theories and scientific explanation. Minnesota volumes typically grow out of intensive workshops focused on specific topics. The participants are invited to contribute because they represent the leading viewpoints of the time. The volumes thus have a coherent focus enhanced by the authors' considerable face to face interaction before their papers are revised for publication. The goal of the MCPS is to continue producing a volume of Minnesota Studies every two to three years on central topics of broad interest within the philosophy of science. The objective is both to define current debates within the field and to help set the agenda for the future.
