Mycology
Over 100 years of expertise in fungal taxonomy
For more than a century mycologists at Kew have helped to increase our knowledge of the fungal kingdom by identifying and describing new families, new genera, new species, in Britain and overseas. Each year over 4,000 specimens are received at Kew from more than 30 countries around the world for expert determination. Kew mycologists have pioneered research into tropical and equatorial fungi from the Amazon to Australia, working in collaboration with overseas research institutes and universities. Following our move to more spacious premises, we can also offer improved research facilities for mycological visitors from abroad. In Britain, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew provides an expert service offering practical assistance with medical problems, legal and forensic consultation, and advice on wood-rotting fungi. I ntroduction Welcome to the home page of the Palouse Mycological Association (PMA), the amateur mushroom club of Washington State University, the University of Idaho, and surrounding area. The Palouse Mycological Association is a relatively new club, formed in January, 1993 by Norma Copes who served as our president until 1995. The goal of our association is to provide opportunities for our members to gain a better understanding of mushrooms and related fungi through forays, presentations and fungal feasts. We have a dedicated and highly enthusiastic core of members and our numbers are growing each year. Our members include amateur and professional mycologists from the Pullman - Moscow area and the surrounding communities of the Palouse. Our scientific advisors are Dr. Lori Carris , associate professor at Washington State University and Dr. Edmund Tylutki, professor emeritus of the University of Idaho. Dr. Tylutki is the author of several books on regional fungi, including Volumes 1 and 2 of Mushrooms of Idaho and the Pacific Northwest

The New York Mycological Society is a nonprofit organization of 150 members who share an interest in mycology (the study of mushrooms and fungi) as well as in mycophagy (the eating of mushrooms.) The present NYMS was reincarnated some 40 years ago by the composer John Cage and a small group of other mushroom lovers and students.
Mycology is Mushrooming! Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of fungi, of which the vegetative growth is typically underground or in wood. Fungi serve a major recycling role in nature, breaking down dead trees and other organic material.
Fungi also help nourish trees and other plants, thus playing a key role in the health of our forests. And yes, some fungi can also play a destructive role in nature by attacking living things such as trees. Most mushrooms are not poisonous and quite a few are very good edibles. But some are very toxic and a few are deadly! Unfortunately there are no simple foolproof rules to distinguish the edible from the poisonous. One must learn individual mushroom species if one plans on eating mushrooms. The most important point is that no one should ever eat unknown mushrooms! When in doubt, throw it out!
Joining a mushroom club is the safe and fun way to learn about mushrooms and
fungi.

General Information: We manage preserved fungal collections for the Virginia Tech Mycological Herbarium (VTMH) and fungal cultures for the Virginia Tech Culture Collection (VTCC). Collections and cultures are on searchable databases which we hope to make available over the Internet in the future (for more information contact Dr. Orson K. Miller, Jr. at: ormiller@vt.edu ). Collections include the Basidiomycetes, Ascomycetes, Zygomycetes, and Deuteromycetes. The greatest portion of our collections and culturesare in the Agaricales (mushrooms), Gasteromycetes, and Aphyllophorales.
The 28,000 collections of fungi in the VTMH include the most complete representation of species available from Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland. In addition, the largest assemblage of collections from Alaska (numbering 6000) are complemented by extensive material from alpine and desert habitats in Idaho and Montana. Smaller collections from Europe, Korea, South Africa, and Western Australia provide additional resources for study. Currently, the mycoflora of the Greater Antilles is being studied intensively.
