Marine Mammals in New Zealand
New Zealand has a rich and diverse fauna of marine mammals. Almost half the world's cetaceans (whales, porpoises and dolphins) have been reported in our waters. For example, the endemic Hector's dolphin (found nowhere else), a number of rare beaked whales, the New Zealand (Hooker's) sea lion (found only in our southern waters), and the widely distributed New Zealand fur seal. Other seals that visit our shores occasionally, such as the southern elephant seal and the leopard seal, are found in larger numbers in Antarctic and sub-antarctic waters.
Threats
The populations of many species of large whales, (such as southern right whales and humpback whales) and both our indigenous seals, were reduced to near extinction by commercial whalers and sealers of the past two centuries. Some are still threatened or endangered, and now face additional threats from habitat degradation, global climate change, by-catch in fishing operations and accumulation of pollutants in the oceans.

British Strandings
The cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) stranded on British shores have been well recorded since 1913, when the Natural History Museum began a scheme in which H.M. coastguards and the Receiver of Wreck submitted details of strandings, and often arranged for corpses to be sent to the museum.

A brief history of man's relationship to marine mammals
The story of what a killer whale named Ramu taught Navy scientist John Hall. Hall later became senior scientist at Sea World.
Scientist Paul Spong who began studying killer whales in the 1960s, says he was struck with "total awe" when he discovered the sound and mental capabilities of these cetacae. Here's a short piece about his work and that of others who first investigated orcas.
Why have dolphins and their relationship with humans been chronicled by the great poets and philosophers? And why have whales and dolphins been honored by cultures around the world? This speech by Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan explores this and other aspects of the "biological kinship" between man and cetaceans.
Discoveries about dolphin intelligence may be leading to difficult questions concerning the barrier between man and animals.
This guide for both swimmers and boaters was prepared by International Dolphin Watch.

    Common Sanctuary Cetaceans from CINMS

From the CINMS: "The dramatic recovery of pinniped populations in the Channel Islands since the end of the fur trade has been documented in recent decades. The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary currently provides habitat for breeding populations of four species of pinnipeds: the California sea lion, the northern fur seal, the northern elephant seal, and the harbor seal. Stellar sea lions and Guadalupe fur seals are occasional visitors to the area. All six species are found in the sanctuary at different times of year, feeding on abundant fish and invertebrate resources of the island shelves or hauling out on rocks and beaches."
