    COA Grants to Malacology
    Previous Grantees
Since the inception of the program in June, 1985, the COA has awarded over $72,360.00 in grants in the field of malacology. Richard Forbush was the first chairman of the Grants Program, awarding grants in the sum of $2000 that year. The chair passed to Dr. R. Tucker Abbott in July, 1988. Dr. Abbott, assisted by Dr. Henry Chaney and Walter E. Sage, III, began a series of increases in grants that has brought the annual giving to $6,000 per year, with more to be allocated as funds are available. (Funding for these grants comes from the proceeds of the COA Annual Auction.) In June, 1995, Dr. Gary Rosenberg (Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia) was appointed COA Grants Director. Other grant committee members are Dr. Henry Chaney (Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History) and Dr. Jose Leal (Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum). Grants in amounts up to $1,500 will be available annually to qualified persons undertaking field or laboratory research on recent or fossil mollusks. Awards are made only to citizens or permanent residents of the Americas or to students attending graduate schools in the United States. Awards are not made to high school students and rarely are made to undergraduate college students. Although proposals of up to $1,500 will be entertained, grants rarely exceed $1,000, due to the large number of qualified applicants. Partial funding is not unusual.

The malacological collections of the National Museum of Natural Sciences.
The mollusc collections of the MNCN are composed of approximately 120,000 lots representing a large number of species from around the world. Of particular importance are the collections that have been gathered from the Phillipines, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, and the Iberian Peninsula.
The most important collections that were the orginal foundation of the Museum collection are those of: Paz y Membiela, Poey, Graells González Hidalgo y Azpeitia. At present, the collections continue to grow through research projects and through donation of private collections, such as the Ortiz de Zárate, and Álvarez and Cobos collections.
A majority of the historical collections has been dry-preserved, but nowadays acquisitions are principally conserved in alcohol or in microscopic preparations, both for optical microscopy and for S.E.M.
