    Like water, this rising tide of data can be viewed as an abundant, vital and necessary resource. With enough preparation, we should be able to tap into that reservoir and ride the wave by utilizing new ways to channel raw data into meaningful information. That information, in turn, can then become the knowledge that leads to wisdom.     Many people are beginning to see their intranets becoming powerful knowledge management systems. However, as with the early days of any new approach, there is an intuitive acceptance of the phenomenon accompanied by much confusion around the concepts involved. Additionally, in fields like knowledge management and organizational learning, there are existing perceptions and terms that may inhibit as much as help our understanding of the new environment. This is why it is useful to start with the definitions and concepts, since these are the tools we humans use to understand and communicate. Here are some definitional concepts you might find useful in thinking about the subject. First, "Learning" is a verb. It is the process of finding (or inventing) patterns from chaos. If we start with an ordered understanding we can't learn, because we already "know" the patterns and relationships. Thus, when people complain about the "chaos" and lack of structure in a free-form intranet, think of it not as a problem, but as a fertile base of materials for organizational learning. Knowledge, on the other hand, is the repository of what we already have learned. It may be explicit, as in books or intranet content, or it may be implicit as in relationships and processes that may not be documented.

Other Events KMWorld's 100 Companies that Matter in Knowledge Management 2003 By Hugh McKellar KMWorld Executive Editor The Faces of Knowledge Management t has been a little more than a year since we last published our list, and those 13 months saw far more than their share of turmoil. The tech sector has, well, tanked in many areas. Consolidation and downright business failures gained even greater momentum. Many surviving companies, even some listed here, have been trying to reposition themselves in that ever-moving target of technology. Which brings us to knowledge management. For reasons I have yet to fully understand, KM has always been an elusive-and sometimes even maligned-term. To be sure, there were some magnificent failures of KM initiatives, especially early on, precisely, I think, because far too many people just don't understand what knowledge management really is-put three analysts, vendors or maybe even editors in a room, and you'll get 10 different definitions. Knowledge management is an attitude, not an application, and that's what we're celebrating with this list: Acknowledging and discovering an organization's information assets and maximizing their use and reuse in every conceivable practical way is, simply, sound business. KM is the umbrella under which other disciplines fall, among them business intelligence, collaboration, competitive intelligence, content management, customer (and partner) relationship management, document management, expertise location, portals, unstructured data management workflow and so on. We've also recognized a number of consultancies and research firms for their contributions to KM. (Although a number of the companies mentioned in the list offer significant e-learning offerings, other e-learning solution providers will be acknowledged in the November/December issue of KMWorld's new 'E-Learning World' section.)

    What is knowledge management? Unfortunately, there's no universal definition of KM, just as there's no agreement as to what constitutes knowledge in the first place. For this reason, it's best to think of KM in the broadest context. Succinctly put, KM is the process through which organizations generate value from their intellectual and knowledge-based assets. Most often, generating value from such assets involves sharing them among employees, departments and even with other companies in an effort to devise best practices. It's important to note that the definition says nothing about technology; while KM is often facilitated by IT, technology by itself is not KM. share what he knows with other caddies, then they all may eventually earn bigger tips. How would KM work to make this happen? The caddie master may decide to reward caddies for sharing their tips by offering them credits for pro shop merchandise. Once the best advice is collected, the course manager would publish the information in notebooks (or make it available on PDAs), and distribute them to all the caddies. The end result of a well-designed KM program is that everyone wins. In this case, caddies get bigger tips and deals on merchandise, golfers play better because they benefit from the collective experience of caddies, and the course owners win because better scores lead to more repeat business.
