High Energy, or Particle, physics involves the study of the world of subatomic particles by observing the collisions of particles accelerated either naturally (as in cosmic rays) or using accelerators. The group is currently involved in five main areas of research in collaboration with various universities. In Australia, we are collaborating on the NOMAD, Belle, and ATLAS projects with the Experimental Particle Physics Group (EPP) of the University of Melbourne. Our areas of research are:
  • The search for Higgs Bosons at ATLAS , CERN, Geneva, Switzerland.
  • The search for CP-violation at Belle , KEK, Tsukuba, Japan.
  • The search for Neutrino Oscillations at NOMAD , CERN
  • Detector and radiation physics
  • The development of accelerator-driven nuclear reactors
You can find out more about our work in these areas here . There are excellent opportunities for new students in any of our research areas.

Whitaker Experimentalists in high-energy physics are probing at the smallest scales of length to learn about the fundamental nature of elementary particles and the interactions between them. In addition they are performing precision tests of the standard model and searching for new physics beyond it. The goal of experimental astrophysics is to determine the nature of the universe through observations of radiation reaching the Earth from space. For further links to our research efforts, see:

    INTRODUCTION
In the conventional view, "stuff" is made of atoms. The atoms are made of electrons, protons and neutrons. High Energy Physics deals with the question of what the electrons, protons and neutrons are made of. It is called "high energy" because experimentally one needs very high energy probes to try to take these "elementary particles" apart. This document is an overview of high energy physics at a non-technical level. It is divided into four sections:
