PREPARATION OF LAKE ERIE AND LAKE SAINT CLAIR BATHYMETRY
The New Bathymetry of Lake Erie and Lake Saint Clair was compiled at a one meter contour interval at scales ranging from 1:100,000 to 1:2,500 and registered to the NOAA nominal scale 1:80,000 digital vector shoreline. The compilation was achieved using all good quality historic hydrographic sounding data collected since 1903 from the NOAA National Ocean Service and its predecessor agency for Great Lakes surveying, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Canadian Hydrographic Service. Digital sounding data, combined with sounding data archived only on paper were used in the compilation with no vertical adjustment. Since 1933, U.S. and Canadian survey data for Lake Erie and Lake Saint Clair has been calibrated to a mean low water standard physical datum in Cleveland, Ohio.

A VISION FOR GEOMORPHOLOGY AND QUATERNARY SCIENCE BEYOND 2000 Executive Summary We describe a major new initiative that directly addresses these issues. Titled Predictive Earth Surface Dynamics , this initiative has two major research activities aimed at different time scales. As a means of promoting collaborative multi-PI research focused on the parallel development of major data sets and comprehensive models, the Whole Basin Dynamics community landscape dynamics model . This model would be designed in a modular fashion to allow portability and improvement of units as our knowledge of a process changes. The linked effort titled Sustainable Landscapes is aimed at developing an integrated set of predictive tools for event-based hazards prediction and mitigation ('landscape forecasting'), and century-long predictions of surface process responses to global change scenarios ('landscape prediction'). As in the Whole Basin studies, both field and model efforts are needed. One crucial difference is that in the Sustainable Landscapes initiative, anthropogenically modified landscapes can and should be included. We propose in particular a "2050 project" in which the state of a particular landscape system is predicted under a variety of climate change and landuse scenarios.

Led by G. Mathias Kondolf, Ph.D., UC Berkeley, this course combines the incredible beauty of the Eastern Sierra Region of California with the expertise of top researchers and practitioners in geomorphology to explore many of the critical issues involved in research and applications of riverine restoration ( faculty biographies ). To support this approach, the course is organized around classroom discussion, current techniques and data from local monitoring stations, and hands-on field experiences course syllabus and schedule In addition to outside experts, the course will host local agency specialists and managers from the US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, California Department of Fish and Game, Bishop Paiute Tribe Environmental Management Office, and Southern California Edison. With this diversity of professional perspectives, the course will emphasize the exchange of ideas and research, both from academic and practical perspectives in an informal, friendly setting.

Lake Ladoga is a unique natural object and the largest freshwater lake in Europe. Almost all water flowing to the Gulf of Finland through Neva river (74 000 10 m ) is comming from the Lake Ladoga. Furthermore, the river Neva brings three fourths of annual water entering the Gulf of Finland and together with the second largest river of the Baltic drainage area - Wisla is responsible for tow thirds of the freshwater inflow into the Baltic Sea. The lake is the source of drinking water for St. Petersburg - one of the largest cities of the world; and is responsible for the water quality in the Gulf of Finland and, therefore, the Baltic Sea. Natural processes in Lake Ladoga and on its shores largely depend on the size and shape of the lake basin and the watershed area (tab. 3.1.). Table 3.1. INTRODUCTION
This bibliography provides a handy list of some important, standard references on karst and cave geology. Most works are in English, and this is not an exhaustive bibliography on the subject; however, it serves as a key to works that in turn lead the researcher to additional material. The intent is to provide a selected list of primary sources to those who are relatively unfamiliar with karst research. This edition contains 124 citations and 6 journals. Listings such as this one are inherently biased due to the background of the persons who compile them. Undoubtably many worthy publications have not been placed on this list. For this, we apologize, and hope that the presented list will be of use to those who view it. The bibliography is arranged as follows:
  • Textbooks on karst and speleology Monographs that introduce the principles of karstic landform development, the origin of caves, and the geomorphic, hydrologic, and geochemical processes of karst. Emphasis is placed on texts originally written in the English language or on foreign language books translated into English.

    Encyclopedia

geomorphology geomorphology, study of the origin and evolution of the earth's landforms, both on the continents and within the ocean basins. It is concerned with the internal geologic processes of the earth's crust, such as tectonic activity and volcanism that constructs new landforms, as well as externally driven forces of wind, water, waves, and glacial ice that modify such landforms. Geomorphology developed from the works of James Hutton and James Playfair in the 18th cent.; G. K. Gilbert described landform evolution; William Morris Davis developed the geomorphic cycle, set forth in his Geographic Essays (1909). By the 1970s, geomorphology had grown to include the environmental problems involved in landform processes, including subsidence landslides , and coastal processes (see coast protection ), which all affect humans who live in certain susceptible regions. Satellite images and data help geomorphologists to describe and map landforms and observe rapid or slow changes on the earth's surface. Development of mathematical models of landform processes have influenced the direction of modern geomorphic research. Geomorphology principles also have been applied to the study of landform development of other planets and moons of the solar system, based on images sent back to earth by flyby and orbiting satellites.

The red arrows point to rounded boulders and rocks, thought to have been shaped by the forces of water in flood (rough edges knocked off by the tumbling action of the water). The blue arrows indicate rocks with sharp edges and points, most probably ejected from nearby impact craters and/or ancient volcanic activity. The white areas (of which Scooby Doo is one) are believed to be deposits left behind by evaporating water, or aggregates of materials fused together by the action of water. The lower image is the clearest image yet of Yogi (with the Sojourner rover taking its Alpha Proton X-ray Spectrometer measurement). It clearly shows the "two-toned" surface of this large rock. The nature of this color difference is not known, however. It might consist of wind-blown dust accumulated on the surface (the rock is leaning into the prevailing wind) or might be evidence of a break from a larger boulder as it was deposited in the ancient flood that scoured this area.

    Landscape and Geomorphology
From both the archaeological and amenity viewpoints the landscape of West Penwith, the Belerion that the Romans knew, landscape studies have progressed markedly over the last decade. From Iron Age fortifications guarding tin trading routes with the early Roman Empire (and possibly long before that) and recent studies of the prehistoric migration of people along the Atlantic seaboard of Iberia, France and the British Isles, the study of landscape and its natural and human assisted development is something that could be encouraged in the area.
