Welcome to the California Geographic Information Systems (GIS) web portal.  The California Mapping Coordinating Committee (CMCC) is in the process of developing a series of GIS-related web pages to provide information on State government GIS activities, access to statewide GIS data, and links to the larger California GIS community.  This website and the Spatial Information Library are works in progress. Starting July 1, 2001 some of California's physical and cultural geospatial information, formerly distributed by the Teale Data Center, is being distributed to the public by the California Mapping Coordinating Committee through servers at the California Environmental Resources Evaluation System (CERES) in the Resources Agency and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ames Research Center. A pre-release of Version 2.0 of the CaSIL Library is available primarily to make California's DOQs available.

On Epidemiology and Geographic Information Systems: A Review and Discussion of Future Directions
Keith C. Clarke, Ph.D., Sara L. McLafferty, Ph.D,. and Barbara J. Tempalski
Hunter College-CUNY, New York, New York, USA Download Article Geographic information systems are powerful automated systems for the capture, storage, retrieval, analysis, and display of spatial data. While the systems have been in development for more than 20 years, recent software has made them substantially easier to use for those outside the field. The systems offer new and expanding opportunities for epidemiology because they allow an informed user to choose between options when geographic distributions are part of the problem. Even when used minimally, these systems allow a spatial perspective on disease. Used to their optimum level, as tools for analysis and decision making, they are indeed a new information management vehicle with a rich potential for public health and epidemiology. Geographic information systems (GIS) are "automated systems for the capture, storage, retrieval, analysis, and display of spatial data"

http://www.biogeog.ucsb.edu/
The UCSB Biogeography Lab has moved to the at the University of California, Santa Barbara . The Lab was originally established in 1991 within the Department of Geography to conduct basic and applied research on the ecology, distribution and conservation status of species and ecosystems with the aid of geographic information systems and remote sensing. Research to date has focused on regional scale mapping and modelling of vegetation cover types, wildlife distributions, and long-term vegetation change, as well as on methods for assessing the accuracy of vegetation maps. Recent work has included designing optimal networks of nature reserves for protecting biodiversity. Most work has concentrated on the region of California and the western United States. Research grants are administered by the Institute for Computational Earth System Science . The Lab is directed by Dr. Frank Davis and managed by Dr. David Stoms

The Geographic Information Systems Division (GIS), together with the Geographic Information Analysis Division (GIA) , form the GIScience concentration at the Department of Geography, University of Zurich. They represent two out of six chairs in the department. Both Divisions have recently been formed by a re-organization of the former Spatial Data Handling Division (SDH) in October 2000. The SDH Division was founded in 1981 by Prof Kurt Brassel, which makes it one of the earliest university groups exclusively devoted to teaching and research in GIScience. Data Management Domestic Emergency Preparedness Electronic Bonding Geographic Info Systems ... Web-based Applications Geographic Information Systems Geographic Information Systems are revolutionizing the management of resources in applications ranging from urban planning to counter-narcotics. And BTG is revolutionizing the way these systems are used. For one client, we collected and integrated thousands of digital aerial images to help locate, identify and destroy illicit coca crops in South America. For others, we are working on flood control, facilities management, and contingency planning. Years of academic education and hands-on experience give BTG's GIS professionals a unique understanding of the elements they are mapping and the information being conveyed. And by applying the latest computer technology, we help our clients manage their resources and facilities to save both time and money. Contact: For More Information: Joe Staton

Image from NASA Johnson Space Center, Imagery Services The activities of this work group focus on investigations of modern and ancient glaciated environments utilizing techniques of geographic information systems (GIS). Data may be derived from traditional methods of field mapping, from various types of aerial and space remote sensing, as well as from existing maps and data bases. GAGE commenced its official activity at the INQUA Congress in Berlin, Germany (Aug. '95), and will continue through the next INQUA Congress. XVI INQUA Congress , Reno, Nevada USA (July, 2003). GAGE is an outgrowth from glaciotectonic mapping projects, in which GIS techniques were used to compile continent-scale data bases for North America and Europesee glaciotectonic maps. The central goals of GAGE are assembly of regional and continental GIS databases for display, analysis, and interpretation of glaciated terrain, as well as for modeling of glacier dynamics and processes. Achieving this goal depends on many new technical tools, and the integration and analysis of various kinds of data also requires development of new concepts for geospatial analysis in glaciated environments. GAGE has undertaken
