ABSTRACT
Exobiology is a discipline that deals with the origin, occurrence and distribution of life in the Universe. Although this subject is of widespread interest to high school science students, it is not generally dealt with comprehensively in most textbooks. In addition, teachers often have inadequate resources available to prepare classroom presentations on how life may have begun on Earth and whether these processes might take place elsewhere in the solar system and the Universe. This module provides introductory teaching lessons for classroom coverage of Exobiology and the origin of life that is suitable for use in both general and advanced high school biology courses.
INTRODUCTION
Any discussion of the origin of life must first consider the definition of life. This Exobiology teaching module defines life is an autonomous replicating system that evolves by natural selection. With this definition, the origin of life is synonymous with the origin of evolution. The transition from the abiotic chemistry of the primitive Earth to the first self-replicating molecular systems capable of undergoing Darwinian evolution marked the point of the origin of life. On Earth, subsequent evolution of these self-replicating molecules then gave rise to the RNA world and ultimately the DNA/protein world that is characteristic of all modern life.

You don't come upon such opinions so often anymore. . . There is a good reason for that. For the first time we are able to actually explore the question. For thousands of years you could only guess. Now there are experiments that can be done."

Astrobiology seeks to answer the mysterious question: Are We Alone? To do this astrobiologists need to understand: -The building blocks of life -How the building blocks combine to create life -How life is affected by the environment -How life expands beyond the planet's origin Exobiology is the study of the possibility of life elsewhere in the universe. For life on another planet to exist the planet has to be close enough to the star to be in the habitable zone around the star.

Exobiology Branch (SSX) Overview

Exobiology studies includes the history, distribution, and chemistry of biogenic elements in the solar system; prebiotic chemical evolution and the origin of life; and the history of EarthÄs early biosphere as recorded in microorganisms and ancient rocks. The research is conducted both on Earth and in space. The Branch also serves as the center of expertise within the agency for issues of planetary protection. As the agency lead center in exobiology, Branch exobiologists exercise a leadership role in NASAÄs Exobiology Program through program planning, performance reviews, advisory services to related NASA programs, and external relations.

The study of the conditions necessary to support the independent development of extraterrestrial life. Direct proof has not yet been found of life anywhere in the universe other than on the earth, but scientifically sound arguments have been advanced in support of such a possibility. The findings of modern astronomy suggest that a large number of stars in the universe could have planets orbiting around them that provide conditions suitable for life, and laboratory experiments have clearly demonstrated that the molecules necessary for life can be formed under a wide range of conditions. EXOBIOLOGY
Exobiology research aims at understanding the origin of life, which, according to our current scientific knowledge, was coupled on Earth to environmental parameters like the existence of complex organic molecules, liquid water and moderate temperatures. These conditions today apparently do not exist on the other planets and moons of our Solar System. However, the occurrence of organisms in extreme ecological niches on Earth (hot springs, deep sea, hot and cold deserts) demonstrates their adaptive capability. Therefore, it cannot be completely excluded that life once developed on Mars perhaps in regions where liquid water was available. From a biological perspective the existence of liquid water, by itself motivates the question of the origin of life on Mars independent of the presence of a warm or thick atmosphere. From studies of the Earth's earliest biosphere we know that by 3.5 Ga ago, life had originated on Earth and reached a fair degree of biological sophistication. Surface activity and erosion on Earth make it difficult to trace the history of life before the 3.5 Ga timeframe. If Mars did maintain a clement environment for longer than it took for life to originate on Earth, then the question of the origin of life on Mars follows naturally. Another possibility might have been the transport of resistant life forms from Earth to Mars. The theory of panspermia requires the escape of material from Earth without impact on embedded life forms; it has been supported by first calculations and experiments with simulated outer space conditions, such as vacuum, UV-light, and cosmic ray particles, as well as in space experiments (Spacelab-1, LDEF).

The scientific objectives of exobiological research on Mars include the following steps:
Investigate the history of water on the planet.
Locate sites where water lain sediments can be found.
Search for organic materials in the soil.
Search for traces of extinct life (e.g. fossils).
Search for possible extant life.
Investigate conditions on the surface regarding the survivability of organisms.
It is likely that the INTERMARSNET Landers can contribute significantly to the first two of these objectives. In addition the geochemical investigations of the martian soil should help understand the reactive nature of these soils as shown by Viking and the resultant lack of organic materials.

Exobiology and the case for life on Mars
I. Exobiology
definition: Exobiology is the study of life outside that known on today's Earth. As a discipline it is pretty much defined by a funding program with NASA's Space Sciences which includes studies in early life on earth, abiogenesis (origins of life studies) , SETI (the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, and more recently, the study of martian meteorites.
II. the Viking Mission
In the 1970's two very successful NASA missions sent 2 surface landers to Mars. What they found was a desert-like landscape strewn with volcanic ejecta and shifting sands. The Viking landers were equipped for three experiments designed to test for signs of life on the planet's surface. However, since the GCMS found no organic compounds at its detection limits (a few parts per billion), the initial positive results of the Viking experiments soon became moot. A. The experiments

Proceedings of the Fifth Trieste Conference on Chemical Evolution: An Abdus Salam Memorial, Trieste, Italy, 22-26 September 1997
edited by
Julian Chela-Flores
The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy; and Instituto de Estudios Avanzados (IDEA), Caracas, Venezuela
Leading researchers in the area of the origin, evolution and distribution of life in the universe contributed to Exobiology: Matter, Energy, and Information in the Origin and Evolution of Life in the Universe . This volume provides a review of this interdisciplinary field. In 50 chapters many aspects that contribute to exobiology are reviewed by 90 authors. These include: historical perspective of biological evolution; cultural aspects of exobiology, cosmic, chemical and biological evolution, molecular biology, geochronology, biogeochemistry, biogeology, and planetology. Some of the current missions are discussed. Other subjects in the frontier of exobiology are reviewed, such as the search for planets outside the solar system, and the possible manifestation of intelligence in those new potential environments. The SETI research effort is well represented in this general overview of exobiology. This book is the proceedings of the Fifth Trieste Conference on Chemical Evolution that took place in September 1997. The volume is dedicated to the memory of Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam who suggested the initiation of the Trieste conferences on chemical evolution and the origin of life.

What is exobiology?
Exobiology is the study of chemical evolution, the origin and early evolution of life, and the search for life and life-related compounds in the solar system. It draws upon almost every area of science, from astronomy to molecular biology to geochemistry. The history of the Earth's biosphere began with the origin of life, and thus the study of exobiology is crucial to understanding biology on Earth as well as elsewhere in the universe.
