Status Report In 2000, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) unleashed a final standard on ergonomics that has caused an unprecedented outcry from manufacturing, shipping and transportation, small business, hospitals, nursing homes, home health care agencies, doctors and other health care professionals. Employers faced billions of dollars in costs to investigate and try to ameliorate what in many cases are aches and pains of daily living that are caused by activities away from work More than a dozen separate law suits were filed against OSHA to stop this rule. The leading experts acknowledge that medical science does not understand the origin of the complaints OSHA is attempting to address. OSHA's final ergonomic regulation, which is based on assumptions and speculation, would fail to assure the prevention of even one injury. OSHA said that it reasonably developed or reviewed the entire rulemaking record, public hearings, briefing, analysis, decisionmaking, OMB review and publication in less than one year. We do not believe that this process was fair, impartial or apolitical. The National Coalition on Ergonomics is an alliance of associations and businesses representing large and small employers across the United States. We are dedicated to a full debate concerning ergonomics. At its origins, ergonomics concepts initially developed as an applied branch of industrial engineering. Ergonomics' purpose is to maximize productivity in the workplace through the application of design and process techniques which maximize employee comfort and minimize employee fatigue. OSHA's application of ergonomics as a tool to prevent injury was misapplied. Ergonomics was never designed or intended to prevent injury.

It costs us over $4 billion each year and, aside from the common cold, keeps more people away from work than any other single cause. Diverse evidence from many cultures shows that sitting has been associated with numerous problems: back pain of all sorts, fatigue, varicose veins, stress, and problems with the diaphragm, circulation, digestion, elimination, and general body development. Instead of viewing the chair as fundamentally flawed, ergonomists believe if they could only invent the perfect chair, all this would be solved.

Ergonomics
Ergonomics is matching the job to the worker and product to the user. Ergonomics and human factors are often used interchangeably in workplaces. Both describe the interaction between the worker and the job demands. The difference between them is ergonomics focuses on how work affects workers, and human factors emphasizes designs that reduce the potential for human error. Ergonomic hazards refer to workplace conditions that pose the risk of injury to the musculoskeletal system of the worker. Examples of musculoskeletal injuries include tennis elbow (an inflammation of a tendon in the elbow) and carpal tunnel syndrome (a condition affecting the hand and wrist). Ergonomic hazards include repetitive and forceful movements, vibration, temperature extremes, and awkward postures that arise from improper work methods and improperly designed workstations, tools, and equipment.

74. Alexander Technique
Basic intorductory information about the Technique.
http://ergonomics.org/articles/atoverview
ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE AN OVERVIEW - from Alexander Technique , an article by Joan Arnold How the Alexander Technique is taught The Alexander Technique is above all an educational method. Alexander Teachers use a combination of verbal instruction and a light, guiding, touch to convey information to their students. Alexander Technique teaching is done in private lessons and in group classes. Private lessons are usually between 1/2 and 1 hour in length. Teacher training Most certified Alexander Technique teachers have completed a three-year full time training course recognized by one of several major professional societies. Typically, the training courses have a student teacher ratio of 5:1 or less, and provide a great deal of individual attention for each trainee. A few teachers have trained more informally on an apprenticeship basis and some of them have become members of professional societies through a rigorous review process. Not all Alexander Technique teachers are certified and not all teachers eligible for certification are members of a professional society. Choosing a teacher Ask about his or her training and be prepared to take a few lessons before deciding whether to continue with a course of lessons. If you live in a community with several teachers, have a lesson or two with several before making a final decision.

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is a common condition among individuals who work in an environment that places stress on certain parts of the body. Anyone that works with computers is in a high RSI risk group, due to the demands placed on the wrist by typing. Musicians, athletes and construction workers are also prone to RSI due to the stress placed on joints and muscles. RSs should be treated as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage to the affected areas. If left untreated, this condition may prevent individuals from working or participating in sports. Most primary care physicians can treat RSI or will refer to a specialist if they are unable to treat a certain case.
