Contract Opportunities for Organizations Distance Masters Degree in Entomology Introduction and Background on the Degree Program The Department of Entomology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) offers a full curriculum distance M.S. degree in Entomology. The distance option emphasizes course work in entomology and flexibility in non-entomological training specific to individual student needs and interests. The distance M.S. option was developed for students who cannot participate in an on-campus degree program. Intended audiences for this degree are individuals actively involved in entomologically related professions where advanced training in entomology is desirable, as well as those seeking such positions. Examples include agricultural professionals, crop consultants, pest control operators, and high school science and biology teachers. Students enrolled in the distance program will have the opportunity to apply the training they receive in this program to their individual professions. In the Department of Entomology, we strive to build programs designed to meet the needs of our students! Here are a few highlights:
  • The Distance M.S. in Entomology degree program follows the requirements for an Option III masters degree. These requirements are determined by the UNL’s Graduate College.

University of Missouri-Columbia Forensic Entomology, or Medicocriminal Entomology, is the science of using insect evidence to uncover circumstances of interest to the law, often related to a crime. The time of death, for example, can usually be determined using insect evidence gathered from and around a corpse, provided the evidence is properly collected, preserved and analyzed by an appropriately educated forensic entomologist. Insect scientists, or entomologists, are being called upon with increasing frequency to apply their knowledge and expertise to criminal and civil proceedings. They are also recognized members of forensic laboratories and medical/legal investigation teams.

Background Information on the Biology of Ticks Larisa Vredevoe, Ph.D, Deparment of Entomology, University of California, Davis Soft tick (left) and Hard tick (right) Ticks are blood feeding external parasites of mammals, birds, and reptiles throughout the world. Approximately 850 species have been described worldwide (Furman and Loomis 1984). There are two well established families of ticks, the Ixodidae (hard ticks), and Argasidae (soft ticks). Both are important vectors of disease causing agents to humans and animals throughout the world. Ticks transmit the widest variety of pathogens of any blood sucking arthropod, including bacteria, rickettsiae, protozoa, and viruses. Some human diseases of current interest in the United States caused by tick-borne pathogens include Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, rocky mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and tick-borne relapsing fever. Hard Ticks: Family Ixodidae
Hard ticks have three distinct life stages. Larvae which emerge from the egg have six legs. After obtaining a blood meal from a vertebrate host, they molt to the nymphal stage and acquire eight legs. Nymphs feed and molt to the next and final stage - the adult, which also has eight legs. After feeding once more, the adult female hard ticks lay one batch of thousands of eggs and then die. Only one blood meal is taken during each of the three life stages. The time to completion of the entire life cycle may vary from less than a year in tropical regions to over three years in cold climates, where certain stages may enter diapause until hosts are again available. Many hard ticks can go for several months without feeding if not unduly duressed by environmental conditions.

Entomology for Beginners
Entomology is the study of insects. This page provides some basic information on insects. First a quick look at the anatomy of adult insects. Then a short story about the metamorphosis of insects.
Insect anatomy
To learn more about the anatomy, click on the different body parts of this insect !!
Metamorphosis of insects
In their development from egg to adult, insects change in form. The different instars are not alike, which is called metamorphosis. There are two general types of metamorphosis: simple metamorphosis and complete metamorphosis.
Simple metamorphosis
In simple metamorphosis the wings develop externally during the larval stages. The larval stages, which are called nymphs, look very similar to the adult insect. There is no pupal stage. The figure shows the development from an egg via 5 larval instars to an adult bug.
Complete metamorphosis
In a complete metamorphosis the wings develop internally during the larval stages. The larval stages look quite different from the adult. Between the last larval stage and the adult stage there is a pupal stage which usually is inactive. The figure shows the development from an egg via the larval stage (caterpillar) and pupa to an adult butterfly or moth.

Entomology at UMass Amherst
The Entomology Program of the UMass Amherst Entomology Department provides opportunities for students to obtain MS and PhD degrees in both applied and basic areas, working closely with internationally known and respected faculty in areas that include population dynamics, insect behavior, biological control, evolution, systematics, toxicology, physiology and pest management. Our graduate students have enjoyed a high rate of success in obtaining University or government laboratory entomology positions throughout the United States. Graduate students receive financial support and free tuition. We are a tightly knit Department with a high degree of interaction among laboratory groups.
