61. Carbon Sequestration In Terrestrial Ecosystems, CSiTE
U.S. DOE research aimed at enhancing carbon capture and longterm sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems.
http://csite.esd.ornl.gov/
...research to find ways to enhance the capture and long-term storage of CO in soil and vegetation... The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science Biological and Environmental Research established CSiTE, a research consortium, to perform fundamental research that will lead to acceptable methods to enhance carbon sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems as one component of a carbon management strategy. The goal of CSiTE is to discover and characterize links between critical pathways and mechanisms for creating larger, longer-lasting carbon pools in terrestrial ecosystems. Research is designed to establish the scientific basis for enhancing carbon capture and long-term sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems by developing:
  • Scientific understanding of carbon capture and sequestration mechanisms in terrestrial ecosystems across multiple scales from the molecular to the landscape,
  • Conceptual and simulation models for extrapolation of process understanding across spatial and temporal scales,
  • Estimates of carbon sequestration potential,
  • Assessments of environmental impacts and economic implications of carbon sequestration
What is carbon sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems?

Daylit Schools ... Chestory / Tom Wisner The Department of the Planet Earth was organized in 1991 by citizens from the United States and Canada, concerned about the rapid decline of global environment, global pollution of ecosystems, health injuries from toxins, and lifestyles and economies like that of the United States and Canada featuring such waste that they challenge Earth's future. There has been a proposal to convert the US Environmental Protection Agency into a Cabinet office or Department of the Environment . This effort failed, as well as an effort to write pollution prevention into the charter of the new agency. And so, the concept of a Department of the Planet Earth is still unrealized. In the development of ecologically friendly and cost-effective solutions to diverse environmental issues, we at Ecosystems believe in excellence and sustainability. We are actively involved in the construction of eco-conscious nature camps and bomas, as well as playground structures for the young and adventurous. There is a pressing need to develop cheap and reliable ways educate people in the importance of environmental management. Our Outcomes Based Education programme [OBE] addresses this imperative. By focusing upon waste management and environmental impact assessments, we plan to make a difference.

East Coast Ecosystems
The North Atlantic Right Whale
A charitable research organization whose primary concern is the fate of the North Atlantic right whale
The North Atlantic Right Whale is the world's rarest, large whale, fewer than 350 remain alive today. Originally reduced by commercial whaling, the right whale continues to face many problems on its slow road to recovery.

Although Right Whales have been protected from whaling since 1935, the population has failed to show any significant signs of recovery. Today right whales die from collisions with ships and are often injured and scarred and sometimes die, from entanglement in fishing gear.
While such deaths and injuries are accidental, conservationists and scientists are working with industry and government to try and find solutions to these and other problems facing the right whale. LightHawk

LightHawk is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit environmental aviation organization. As such, we are an unusual hybrid: our mission is environmental but our method is aviation. In particular, we are a volunteer-based aviation organization with more than 100 current volunteer pilots who donate time, expertise, and the use of their aircraft. Our environmental mission is fulfilled through our partnerships: we partner with more than 130 partner organizations e ach year, providing environmental services including matching volunteer pilots and aircraft with requests for flights, assistance in projec t planning, and education and support in related areas that include the use of flight in environmental campaigns, effective media flights, the use of technical flights for image or data acquisition, and others. LightHawk facilitates more than 900 flights that carry more than 1800 passengers per year in nine countries in North and Central America.
The diverse types of missions our volunteers support include guided educational flights for passengers who may be local villagers, community leaders or members of Congress; media flights for reporters, photographers, and filmmakers working on environmental stories; technical flights to support scientists working on habitat and species surveys; and surveillance flights that help document environmental crimes and land use conditions. Matching willing volunteers with effective environmental groups and projects is what we do best.
