Ph.D. University of Washington, 1983 Full Curriculum Vitae Research Interests Avian ecology, wildlife biology, conservation biology My research addresses problems in wildlife conservation and the development of multidisciplinary approaches to the conservation of protected areas. Central to that research has been the application of ecological principles to the conservation of rare and endangered species and their habitats. Recent studies of the stopover and breeding biology of Neotropical migratory birds along the northern Gulf coast and in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are examining the relationship between populations of these birds and landscape scale patterns of habitat availability and land use. Methodologies and habitat models developed for birds are also being used to create new approaches for sampling and monitoring salamander populations.

Research My research focuses on the comparative study of behavior, ecology, and health. Fieldwork is a crucial component of my program of research, as I find it the very best way to develop novel, empirical understandings of the world about us. I also tend to be oriented to integrative, interdisciplinary, and collaborative study. Theoretically, I am a biocultural anthropologist influenced by human adaptability, evolutionary ecology (and life history), behavioral ecology, and medical ecology approaches. My primary research focus for the next several years is on the ecology of children's behavior and children's physical and psychological well-being. In my primary project, I am using comparison between children living in diverse contexts to test ideas about the adaptive contexts of children's behavior, and investigate its implications for children's health and development. Currently, we are focused on problematic hyperactive, impulsive, and inattentive child behaviors, those related to childhood behavioral problems and diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. You can find a fuller description of this project here Previous projects also reflect my interest in bio-cultural studies of human health and behavior, especially of children and women. Recently I finished publication of a cross-cultural study of the ecology of Samoan body image. I also have a long-term research interest in human reproductive ecology and demographic field studies with Micronesian island populations. While I consider myself a 'Pacificist,' currently I am working almo

"Knowledge ecology" is an interdisciplinary field of management theory and practice, focused on the relational and social/behavioral aspects of knowledge creation and utilization. Its primary study and domain of action is the design and support of self-organizing knowledge ecosystems, providing the infrastructure in which information, ideas, and inspiration can travel freely to cross-fertilize and feed on each other. In the Throes of Transformation Like a Rainforest or the Human Brain Emerging Principles Our Tasks In the Throes of Transformation ongoing, large-scale social innovation , people can point to a whole range of phenomena, from new and novel uses of technologies to globalization and the shrinking role of central government in most economies. Beneath the surface there is something even more fundamental - a revolution - taking place. This is variously referred to as the emergence of new paradigms or a shift in worldviews : a different set of beliefs about the world and how it works. This fundamental change is revealed in new ideas about the management of organizations that focus on learning and knowledge sharing, and on collaboration (rather than competition). Another sign of fundamental change is uncertainty Concern about these issues stems from the realization that the institutions and assumptions that have dominated thinking and shaped policies for most of the past century are inadequate for the contemporary world and tasks that lie ahead. Typically, the old model institutions involved 'high control' processes. Expert knowledge was seen to be the preserve of a few people, operating in highly specialized fields, separately and often in direct competition with each other.

Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java. Diamondback Terrapins ( Malaclemys terrapin ) are undoubtedly one of the world's most attractive and colorful turtles. Found throughout the Eastern through Southern coasts of the United States, diamondbacks are quickly gaining popularity as a much sought after species among avid herpetoculturists and beginning hobbyists alike.  Not surprising considering their beauty, so elegantly captured in the above picture of a Carolinan Diamondback Terrapin by Dave Strasser of DS Photography.  Unfortunately, as terrapins win the heart of hobbyists throughout the world, they also seem to be losing their ecological niche in the wild.  Diamondbacks have the dubious distinction of being a classic target for conservation efforts among the scientific, environmental and even governmental community.
This web site was created by the Diamondback Terrapins eGroup with a five-fold purpose in mind:
    1) to display the beauty of diamondbacks through a photographic essay,
    2) to provide general background information about the species
