82. Eclipses
Solar eclipses A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly in frontof the Sun, blocking out its view over a small region on the Earth.
http://astrosun.tn.cornell.edu/courses/astro201/eclipse.htm
Click here to find Fred Espenak's eclipse page at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Solar Eclipses: A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun , blocking out its view over a small region on the Earth. Remember that the angular diameters of the Sun and the Moon as viewed from Earth are almost identical. Lunar Eclipses: A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves through the Earth's shadow, thereby blocking sunlight from falling on the Moon. In order for there to be a total eclipse, the Moon must go through the umbra of the Earth's shadow. If the Moon partly goes through the umbra, there will be a partial eclipse. If the Moon only goes through the penumbra, then the Moon's light is only slightly dimmed, and the eclipse is hardly noticeable here on Earth. The Moon's orbit is tipped by 5 degrees with respect to the Earth's orbit. Therefore, eclipses do not occur every month. Instead, there are two eclipse seasons every year, about 6 months apart. Eclipses can occur only then the Sun, Moon and Earth line up perfectly, that is, when the line of interesection of the Earth's orbit plane and the Moon's points directly at the Sun. This is called the line of nodes. Movement of the line of nodes causes the eclipse seasons to vary from one year to the next. You might also look at this external link to the solar eclipse primer at MrEclipse.com.

83. Astronomy For Kids - Sky Facts - Lunar Eclipse
Brief explanation about how lunar eclipses happen.
http://www.dustbunny.com/afk/howdo/luneclipse/luneclipse.htm
A lunar eclipse happens when the Moon passes through the Earth's shadow. Earth always has a shadow, which is created by the Sun. On those rare occasions when the Moon, Earth and the Sun are all lined up just right, the Moon passes through this shadow. The Earth's shadow has darker and lighter areas, which you can see by watching the movie at right. As the Moon passes through the Earth's shadow, you can see the Moon's face get darker and darker as the shadow crosses its face, until the Moon is almost completely dark. Even when the Moon is in the darkest area of the Earth's shadow, though, there is still some light on the Moon's surface. This is caused by the fact light from the Sun bends slightly as it hits the Earth's atmosphere. This fact, along with the fact that light always bends around things it hits, casts a faint light on the Moon. When the Moon is in the darkest part of Earth's shadow, or in totality , it can have some beautiful colors, usually a dark pastel, such as violet or a very dark apricot.

    Solar Eclipses
Solar eclipses have long been regarded as one of the most outstanding happenings in nature. They have been a source of great mysticism, intrigue, and power for nearly every human culture on Earth. Defined, a solar eclipse is when the Earth's moon crosses in front of the sun as observed from Earth. Seen from space, the eclipse is the shadow of the moon being cast onto a select and small region of the Earth's surface. Annular eclipses occur when the moon is further away from the Earth causing only a portion of the sun to be obscured. This is an annular eclipse: Solar eclipses, on the other hand, are caused by the moon being closer to the Earth making the entire solar disk disappear for a brief time. This is a total eclipse: This is what the different types of eclipses look like to the earthbound observer. In order: Partial, Annular, Total. Note the sun's corona surrounding the total eclipse.

    Lunar Eclipses
Although a little less dramatic, lunar eclipses can be just as exciting as solar eclipses. These occur when the Earth's shadow falls upon the full moon.

    THE
DEATH OF GODS IN ANCIENT EGYPT AN ESSAY ON EGYPTIAN RELIGION AND THE FRAME OF TIME JANE B. SELLERS Revised and Updated Edition, 1999 Jane Sellers has spent much of her sixty years questioning puzzles in the fields of Astronomy and Ancient Near Eastern Civilizations, dual interests that fueled a search for the threshold of Egyptian beliefs and led to a testing of the theory advanced in Hamlet’s Mill. She has traveled to the deserts of Egypt and the Empty Quarter (where it spills into the United Arab Emirates) for an appraisal of dawn risings, and to such places as Surabaya;, Java, and recently, the Black Sea, for the observation of solar eclipse phenomenon Following studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, she earned her BA at Goddard College, Vermont, and went on to study Egyptology at the University of Chicago’s Oriental Institute. She winters in :Portland, Maine, and summers at Ripley Neck, a nineteenth-century enclave ‘downeast’ on Maine’s rocky coast. ‘There the night skies can be as clear as in the desert, and no one minds if you read the Pyramid Terxts out loud to the seagulls.’

These include tours to observe such events as Halley's Comet, transits of Venus, solar eclipses and other fascinating sky phenomena. The number of eclipse tours listed that we have done are for separate solar eclipses, not just individual programs. We are a public outreach effort of the NASA Johnson Space Center Astronomical Society and welcome all persons who are interested in astronomy and the natural sciences.
