Teaching My teaching interests include general biology, physiology, ecology, and field biology. I am especially excited about bridging the gap between the classroom and field by offering hands-on field courses and research opportunities for our students in such inspirational places as the Pacific Northwest, the Sonoran Desert, and Mexico. Courses and Field Programs: General Ecology class at Mt. St. Helens Oct. 1999 Introductory Biology (BISC 110) BISC 375 General Ecology BISC 377 Desert Ecology/Regional
Natural History
... Undergraduate Research
Research My research focuses on physiological ecology and behavior of reptiles and amphibians particularly rattlesnakes and Gila monsters..
Rattlesnake Research
Here in central Washington, I am analyzing the physical characteristics of several winter dens used by the Northern Pacific rattlesnake. In addition, I am exploring patterns of variation in energetics, growth rates and demographics among the snake populations inhabiting those dens and using radiotelemetry to monitor activity patterns, thermal biology, and behavior. Gila monster Research In the southwest, I am continuing a long-term study of the Gila monster in the Chihuahuan Desert of New Mexico with my colleague, Randy Jenning of Western New Mexico University. We are using miniature dataloggers and radiotransmitters to explore the behavioral and physiological consequences of refuge-site selection by these ancient, venomous lizards. I am also working with two other colleagues, Charles H. Lowe and Brent Martin, on writing a book about Gila monsters and beaded lizards.

Raven ecology in the Mojave Desert Ecology of raven predation on desert tortoises
Project name and/or scientific questions being addressed Ecology of raven predation on desert tortoises. The desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) is a Federal- and State listed threatened species. One cause for declines in its populations is predation on juveniles by common ravens (Corvus corax), a native predatory bird species native to the Mojave Desert. The Recovery Plan for the Desert Tortoise recommended that research be conducted on sources of mortality (including natural predation). This study was implemented to investigate the geographic distribution, level, and demographic impacts of raven predation on tortoise populations. The purpose of the Field Nature Studies Program is to help students better understand the complex ecological relationships within nature. The program consists of two Certificate Programs in Field Ecology and Desert Ecology, and three Specialized Study Programs in Field Botany, Field Geology and Field Ornithology for persons who want further study in an area of particular interest. The curricula for all five programs were developed in cooperation with an advisory panel of distinguished natural scientists. Certificate in Field Ecology Certificate in Desert Ecology These programs help students develop an understanding of ecological relationships and qualify as paid or volunteer naturalists at parks, museums, botanical gardens or nature preserves. Certificate Requirements The Certificate in Field Ecology or the Certificate in Desert Ecology is awarded upon successful completion (grade C or better) of 21 units within the study tracks below. Many courses may apply to either certificate, but only six units may apply to both.

M.Sc./M.A. in Desert Studies – Program in Environmental Studies A new initiative of The Albert Katz International School for Desert Studies at the Jacob Blaustein Institute for Desert Research, Ben Gurion University of the Negev and the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies at Kibbutz Ketura. Mission: This graduate studies program is designed to train students interested in pursuing careers in nature conservation, environmental protection and regulation, environmental education, environmental planning and enforcement of environmental regulations. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for work in the government, non-government and business sectors without precluding opportunities for continued doctoral studies. The program brings together two educational centers from the south of Israel with their unique institutional orientations and faculties into a single Masters program: The Jacob Blaustein Institute for Desert Research situated at the Sede Boqer campus of the Ben Gurion University of the Negev, is a world-renowned center for the study of desert biodiversity, evolutionary and physiological ecology, as well as population, community, and landscape ecology. The Arava Institute for Environmental studies at Ketura, has emerged as an innovative teaching and research center, with a focus on regional Middle Eastern environmental challenges including policy, sustainable agriculture and the social and cultural aspects of environmental issues.

Desert Ecology by Katrina Smolak Nurse plants Cryptobiotic crust Plant ID Bajadas ... Final words The desert biome holds many forms of life. A large variety of flora, fauna, and microscopic critters and growths all adapted to the harsh life of the desert and all functioning together to aid in each other's survival. Saguaros and other large cacti of the Sonoran desert develop only slowly from seeds - the seedlings might take 2-3 years to reach a height of only 3 cm. During this time they are very vulnerable to drought in the intense exposure of the sun, so they almost invariably develop in the shade of a tree or shrub - a "nurse plant". For example, the image below shows a young saguaro - about 40 cm tall and probably 15 years old. It has grown up in the shade of a shrub (limber bush). These nurse plants not only provide shelter from the sun but also provide a soil with at least some organic matter (from fallen leaves etc.) and a richer supply of nitrogen - most of these nurse trees are nitrogen-fixing species, with Rhizobium or related bacteria in their root nodules. Desert communities depend of the cryptobiotic crust, an inconspicuous grey-brown covering of the sand surface, consisting of fungi, cyanobaceria and lichens, but in later stages of development (after 50 years or more;) the crusts form small humps on which mosses grow. All these pioneer organisms aid in water retention and pave the way for growth of higher plants. Lichens, which consist of a fungal tissue containing either green algae or cyanobacteria as the photosynthetic partner, play a vital role in colonisation of the bare sand. The cyanobacteria which fix atmospheric nitrogen (N2) gas into amino acids and thus progressively enrich the soil with nitrogen for plant growth.

Cloth (0-8165-1869-6) $46.00s Economic Botany Plant Systematics and Evolution The Sonoran Desert is a distinctive biotic region that fascinates scientist, students, and nature lovers. This book offers an accessible introduction to Sonoran Desert ecology. Eight original essays by Sonoran Desert specialists such as Paul Martin and Richard Felger provide an overview of the practice of ecology at landscape, community, and organismal scales. The essays explore the rich diversity of plant life in the Sonoran Desert and the ecological patterns and processes that underlie it. They also reveal the history and scientific legacy of the Desert Laboratory in Tucson, which has conducted research on the Sonoran Desert since 1903. Coverage includes diversity and affinities of the flora, physical environments and vegetation, landscape complexity and ecological diversity, population dynamics of annual plants, form and function of cacti, and the relationship between plants and the animals that use them as feeding and breeding resources. The text also examines the ecological consequences of modern agricultural development, as well as the impact on the modern biota of 40,000 years of change in climate, vegetation, megafauna, and ancient cultures. This comprehensive book covers a broad range of spatial and temporal scales to highlight the diversity of research being pursued in the Sonoran Desert. It is both a testament to these ongoing studies and an authoritative introduction to the diverse plant life in the region.
