Cultural Anthropology
Cultural Anthropology encompasses three broad topics within which are numerous other specialties. Ethnology involves the study of contemporary societies, or societies that exist today. Ethnologists use a technique called participant observation in their research that was developed by Franz Boas Marshall Sahlins used the participant observation method and developed the theory of the original affluent society. He said that foragers are the original affluent society, because members of these societies spend less time working than members of so called civilized societies, and thus have more time for leisure. Napoleon Chagnon has recently studied the Yanomamo using the participant observation method. The study of linguistics is the study of language. Two important ideas in the study of linguistics are the tabula rasa which was developed by Noam Chomsky and the Sapir Whorf hypothesis . Archaeologists typically study prehistory by reconstructing a society based on remains. A new subfield of archaeology, historical archaeology, however, deals with history. Lewis Binford and Gordon Willey are important American Archaeologists today.

50. A New Perspective For Anthropology: The Aesthetic Realism Of Eli Siegel
Essays in cultural anthropology on the philosophy of Aesthetic Realism.
http://www.perey-anthropology.net/
How can anthropology have a full, scientific basis a means of describing cultures and people that can be understood by any person who lives anywhere in the world? How can anthropology be a means for people to know, and respect, other human beings of other cultures, whose skin may be another color? These questions are inseparable from the theoretical problem that is as yet unresolved in anthropology: Is it possible to describe a society or culture in a way that is verifiable, free of prejudice, true and kind? The method to do just this is in Aesthetic Realism, the philosophy founded by the great American poet, critic, social scientist, Eli Siegel. You will see why humanity needs to study the following principle by Mr. Siegel in order to end terror and cruelty, including that of racism: "The world, art, and self explain each other: each is the aesthetic oneness of opposites." This principle has a place in the social sciences comparable to the place of the Einstein equation, E=mc , in physics. I shall be saying

Rappaport A comprehensive analysis of religion’s evolutionary significance and a study of its main component, ritual. ‘Once in a great while there appears a book that alters the dimensions of the intellectual field to which it speaks. This is such a book. In it, the author marshals insights drawn from ethnography and ecology, the cybernetics of communication, comparative religion and semiotics to establish the centrality of ritual for what it means to be human. In clear and elegant prose, Roy Rappaport calls into question many of the ways we think about the world. The result is an intellectual adventure of the first magnitude’ Eric Wolf Hardback ( Paperback
