Cryptozoology
Have we found all the large animals still living in the world? Probably not, since in the last decade some previously unknown species have surfaced in Southeast Asia, for example. This page is dedicated to such animals commonly called "cryptids" which might possibly exist in nature but whose existence has not yet been accepted by modern science. If you are interested in animals which have never existed in nature (although they may, in part, have been based upon real animals) such as gryphons and mermaids, please see my legendary animals page. Cryptozoological topics have generated a vast number of books, magazines, and articles. My page of books about cryptozoology lists some I've found interesting. Encounters with hairy hominids or "wild men" like the Yeti Sasquatch , and Nguoi Rung go back to antiquity and appear in legends throughout the world. One of the earliest literary compositions in the world, the Epic of Gilgamesh, contains a hairy wildman named Enkidu. North America's representative is usually called the Sasquatch, one of its Native American names, or Bigfoot. The best-known photographic evidence is the famous Roger Patterson film of a purported Sasquatch, taken in 1967. (Stories that Patterson's film was a hoax continue to circulate.) One hypothesis is that some reports represent encounters with surviving representatives of supposedly extinct hominoid or hominid species. A popular choice for Bigfoot is

Taking a Hard Look at Cryptozoology
Cryptozoology is the study of still unknown species of animals. These cryptids, as they are called, include not only the Loch Ness monster, sasquatch and other "mega-monsters", but also many lesser known mystery creatures. (Some of these have more evidence going for them than the monster super-stars.) Cryptozoology often receives a bad rep because it is often practiced with little skepticism, or regard for scientifically supported facts and theories. Likewise, paranormal cryptozoologists do little to help the integrity of cryptozoology. It can, however, be a level-headed, interesting and possibly even scientific subject, if examined with open-minded skepticism and a scientific viewpoint. Such an approach is the basis of this web site on cryptozoology. Ockham's razor, which basically states that the simplest explanation is probably the correct one, is a rationale that looms large here. This web site is undergoing a major revampplease disregard any juvenile grammar and credulity (I started this web site when I was rather young)!

``At first I didn't believe him. Then he showed me the reputable magazine... She calls the strange new species Hotheaded Naked Ice Borers.'' Rev. Ivan Stang People in modern society have less contact with wild animals than did our ancestors, and the vast bestiary of imaginary animals that were assumed part of the natural world in years past has dwindled down to a handful of remotely credible Bigfoots (and other Hairy Hominids ), The Loch Ness Monster, the forest apemen of Vietnam , Goatman, Hodag khting vor , ``Champ'' of Lake Champlain, the grisly Chupacabra , and such also-rans as Ogopogo , the Hot-Headed Naked Ice Borer , the Devil-Jack Diamond fish , the winged cats the Jersey Devil , the South American dog-eating eagle , and dead people who somehow avoid living in the past tense. These are the pathetic remains of an imaginary ecosystem that was once home to dragons , bunyip, mermaids, centaurs , gowrow, unicorns enormous sea-serpents , sphinxes, phoenices, gargoyles, hoopsnakes, werewolves and fairies et cetera Alas, imaginary creatures are going extict almost as quickly as real ones.

Cryptozoology On the Internet
Here is a list of a number of cryptozoology web pages.
The Virtual Insitute of Cryptozoology This is the best cryptoz site on the Net! It's run by French cryptozoologist Michel Raynal and so much of it is still available only in French. However, a lot has been translated into English and an English version is available. This page is huge, and has nice pics, great articles and features, recent news and more. Excellent page!
Loch Ness Investigation 2000 Excellent page put together by Dick Raynor, a Loch Ness veteran. Outlines his research, including deep-water and surface photography. Also, there is an informative database of known animals and physical effects that probably play a large role in reports of the Loch Ness monster. Good open-mindedly skeptical approach. Many excellent photos as well.
Loren Coleman's Cryptozoology Page A good page put togethor by a renowned researcher.
The Quest for Thylacoleo . Web site devoted to an on-going search for the Queensland tiger, which some have postulated is a surviving Thylacoleo (the recently-extinct marsupial lion).
