22. CryoCare Foundation - Cryonics Services
CryoCare Foundation offers cryonics services. The site includes a good explanation of cryonics, with a large library of articles.
http://www.cryocare.org/
CryoCare Foundation was established in 1993 to provide state-of-the-art human cryopreservation with assistance from two separate, independent businesses: BioPreservation, which provided our remote standby, transport, perfusion, and cooldown capability, and CryoSpan, which managed the long- term maintenance of patients at liquid-nitrogen temperature. Ultimately we hoped that growth in cryonics would encourage the formation of additional service providers. We envisaged a future in which our members would benefit as BioPreservation and CryoSpan found themselves in a free market, bidding against competitors. Unfortunately, we overestimated the potential growth and profitability of cryonics. Also we underestimated the tendency of volunteers and enthusiasts to burn out, especially in a high-stress occupation such as remote standby work. BioPreservation opted not to renew its contract with us in 1999, and no longer provides any cryonics services. CryoSpan still exists, but its majority shareholder wants to wind down the company and transfer the patients elsewhere. Consequently, CryoCare now finds itself without any service providers.

Introduction
Most people, if they think of cryonics at all, think of Woody Allen in Sleeper , Sigorney Weaver in Aliens , or Mel Gibson in Forever Young . The hero, after spending decades or centuries in the deep freeze, thaws out gradually and somewhat painfully. Rather stiff from the cold, the warmth of the new era slowly penetrates into their chilled limbs until they at last stretch and look about the world with renewed interest and vitality. Not! All in all, our hero is not going to simply thaw out and walk off. And yet the literature on freezing injury, on ischemia, and on the other damage likely caused by a cryonic suspension forced me to conclude that cryonics would almost surely work: how can this be?
Molecules and people
Fundamentally, people are made of molecules. If those molecules are arranged in the right way, the person is healthy. If the're arranged in the wrong way, the person is unhealthy or worse. While a surgeon's knife does indeed rearrange molecular structure, it does so only in the crudest fashion. The living tissue itself is what really arranges and rearranges the intricate and subtle molecular structures that underlie life and health. When the tissue is too badly damaged, when intracellular levels of ATP are too low to provide the energy the tissue needs to function, when its own internal structure is disrupted, it can no longer heal itself. Today's surgical tools, gross and imprecise at the cellular and molecular level, can no more aid in this process than a wrecking ball could be used to repair a Swiss watch.

Cryonics Over Dead Geeks' Bodies
By Michelle Delio Also by this reporter Page 1 of 2 next
02:00 AM Jul. 20, 2001 PT Many geeks will survive death and go on to a glorious future assuming that medical science figures out a way to defrost and reanimate them. According to a new book, The Mummy Congress: Science, Obsession and the Everlasting Dead , techies make up a large percentage of those who have signed up for cryonic suspension, an experimental procedure used to preserve legally dead bodies in the hopes that future medical breakthroughs will allow them to be brought back to life.

28. Cryonics And Scientific American
cryonics and Scientific American. This is your brain on cryonics. Hardlyan appetizing description, and in fact totally inaccurate.
http://www.alcor.org/press2001SciAm.html
Cryonics and Scientific American The growing popularity of cryonics is evidenced by a recent article in the September Scientific American titled "Nano nonsense and cryonics." While hardly a flattering title, the first paragraph is worse: Cryonicists believe that people can be frozen immediately after death and reanimated later when the cure for what ailed them is found. To see the flaw in this system, thaw out a can of frozen strawberries. During freezing, the water within each cell expands, crystallizes, and ruptures the cell membranes. When defrosted, all the intracellular goo oozes out, turning your strawberries into runny mush. This is your brain on cryonics. Hardly an appetizing description, and in fact totally inaccurate. Alcor has for years perfused cryoprotectants through the vasculature system of the brain (not easily done with a strawberry) which greatly reduce ice formation. Last year (in 2000) we adopted new cryoprotectants and ice blockers which effectively eliminate ice formation in a process called "vitrification." No ice, no ice damage, no runny mush. We were somewhat perturbed by Scientific American's grossly inaccurate description, but attributed it to simple ignorance. Ralph Merkle, an Alcor Board member who was mentioned in the article, submitted the following "Letter to the Editor" to correct their oversight:

A "typical" cryonics procedure goes, or rather should go, as follows: after de-animation (clinical death, usually pronounced after cessation of heartbeat and breathing), the patient is released into the custody of the ( local ) cryonics emergency team and/or a specially trained (local) mortician , and cooled with ice, or, better still, in a portable ice bath (PIB) with a spray cooling device ("squid") which further accelerates the temperature descend, to approx. 5-10*C. During cooldown, the patient's head always has top priority, for obvious reasons. If the patient hasn't been dead for more than an hour or so, and if his body is still largely intact, he is simultaneously re-oxigenated (optional) and treated with various medications, including anticoagulants like

    What is cryonics?
Many people confuse the terms cryogenics, cryobiology, suspended animation, cryonic suspension, and cryonics. Here are my definitions of these terms, which I believe are pretty much standard.
    Cryogenics
The study of materials at very low temperatures (near absolute zero). Cryogenics is a branch of physics.
    Cryobiology
The study of the effect of low temperatures (below the freezing point of water) on biological systems. A primary goal of this field is the preservation and long term storage of organ systems such as hearts, kidneys, etc. for use in transplantation. This goal has not yet been reached and currently only individual cells and organisms consisting of only a very few cells (such as embryos) can be successfully treated, stored, and revived.
    Suspended animation
This term refers to the ability to start and stop, at will, a biological system (usually a person) through some physical means (usually the use of cold temperatures). Suspended animation does not currently exist.
    Cryonic suspension
A (currently non-standard) medical technique for attempting to prevent the permanent cessation of life in individuals on the brink of death. It involves the use of low temperatures to halt metabolic decay. A person who is cryonically suspended can

    I. CRYONICS: PURPOSE AND DEFINITION
As defined in WEBSTER'S NEW UNIVERSAL UNABRIDGED DICTIONARY, cryonics is "the practice of freezing the body of a person who has just died in order to preserve it for possible resuscitation in the future, as when a cure for the disease that caused death has been found." If future molecular-repair technology can repair damage caused by cryopreservation (including freezing-damage), cure all diseases and stop (and reverse) biological aging then cryonics is the "first aid" which can preserve contemporary humans for future science. Cryonics, in other words, may be the gateway to a future world of eternal youth and prosperity. Cryonics is to be distinguished from cryogenics , the physics of low temperature, and cryobiology , the science of low-temperature effects on biological systems. Use of the word "cryogenics" to mean "cryonics" is a quick tip-off that the speaker or writer is ignorant of the subject of cryonics.

    Research interests
My current research interest is molecular manufacturing (also called nanotechnology ). The central objective of molecular manufacturing is the design, modeling, and manufacture of systems that can inexpensively fabricate most products that can be specified in molecular detail. This would include, for example, molecular logic elements connected in complex patterns to form molecular computers, molecular robotic arms or Stewart platforms (e.g., positional devices ) able to position individual atoms or clusters of atoms under programmatic control (useful if we wish to make molecular computers and other molecular manufacturing systems), and a wide range of other molecular devices. A central concept for achieving low cost in molecular manufacturing is that of a self replicating journal Nanotechnology , (published by IOPP ). I
