Cryonics : the word itself conjures futuristic images in many peoples’ minds, and has, undoubtedly, been the subject of more than its share of movies and student science fair projects. But what actually is the discipline of cryonics? And, why are so many people now becoming fascinated with the process of cryopreservation? Visiting Alcor’s website addresses these (and other) vital questions about cryonics. If you are like many people, the term you might be more familiar with is "cryogenics." Overview
  • The purpose of cryonics is to save lives and restore health.
  • Today's medical technology can't always keep us alive, let alone healthy.
  • A future medical technology based on a mature nanotechnology should be able to preserve life and restore health in all but the most extreme circumstances.
  • Tissue preserved at the temperature of liquid nitrogen does not deteriorate, even after centuries of storage.
  • Therefore, if current medical technology can't keep us alive we can instead choose to be preserved in liquid nitrogen, with the expectation that future medical technology should be able to both reverse any cryopreservation injury and restore good health. A common misconception is that cryonics freezes the dead. As the definition of "death" is "a permanent cessation of all vital functions" the future ability to revive a patient preserved with today's fundamentally better medical technology bury someone alive
    Evaluating cryonics
The major reason that cryonics is not more favorably viewed in the medical community is relatively easy to explain. Medicine relies on clinical trials. Put more simply, if someone proposes a technique for saving lives, the response is "Try it and see if it works." Methods that have not been verified by clinical trials are called "experimental," while methods that have been tried and failed are rejected.

Mark Dowdey While most transhumanists are quite convinced that life extension will be possible, most agree that it will take several years (or decades/centuries) before immortality becomes practical. And in the meantime there is a non-zero chance that you die from accidents or disease, regardless of how healthy your lifestyle is. One answer to this problem is cryonics , or rather cryonic suspension ; the technique of freezing the body to so low temperatures that it does not decay significantly. If misfortune strikes, you could be suspended until medical techniques have been developed far enough to revive you and cure you. Cryonics is currently a big gamble, and even the enthusiasts acknowledge that there are many unsolved problems. But there is little to loose by choosing cryonic suspension: either it will work and restoration methods will be developed and used in the far future, or it won't:
You are suspended You are not suspended Cryonics Works You Live You are dead Cryonics Doesn't Work You are dead You are dead
So the rational choice is to use cryonics, even if success is improbable, unless you consider the value of your life times the chance that it might work to be less than the cost of a suspension.

It gained more attention when Doubleday published the first of several successful commercial editions, including several in foreign languages; and with the publication of my next book, "Man Into Superman. "Organizations sprang up immediately. CRYONICS: A Basic Introduction Q: What is 'cryonics'? A: Cryonics is a medical technique designed to save lives and overcome illness and suffering. It involves cooling patients to the point where molecular physical decay completely stops, in the expectation that scientific and medical procedures currently being developed will be able to revive them and restore them to good health later on. A patient held in such a state is said to be in 'cryonic suspension'. Q: Can cryonics be performed on living people? A: Legally, not yet. Obviously, it would be better to cool a patient before illness causes so much physical damage that it results in death. But it's not presently allowed by law, even for someone in great suffering or with a terminal illness. We expect that one day it will be, under carefully controlled conditions, once revival from cryonic suspension can be demonstrated. Q: How do you know revival is even possible? A: Our web site contains articles and links to an immense amount of scientific and medical evidence that leads to that conclusion. Indeed there are so many studies, often written of such a technical nature, that a quick summary is impossible: you need to study it and you should, since doing so could help you make a decision that could save your life, and the lives of others. But, in essence: revival seems likely because:

BASICS OF CRYOGENIC METALLURGY Table of Contents (links) Introduction The thermal treatment of metals must certainly be regarded as one of the most important developments of the industrial age. After more than a century, research continues into making metallic components stronger and more wear-resistant. One of the more modern processes being used to treat metals (as well as other materials) is cryogenic tempering. While the science of heat treatment is well known and widely understood, the principles of cryogenic tempering remain a mystery to most people in industry. Information regarding this process is full of contradictions and unanswered questions. Until recently, cryogenic tempering was viewed as having little value, due to the often brittle nature of the finished product. It is only since the development of computer modeled cooling and reheat curves that the true benefits of cryogenically treated materials have become available to industry and the general public.
The purpose of this work is not to break new ground in cryogenic science, nor will it answer all of the questions surrounding this process. Rather, this is a condensation of much of the information available concerning the effects cryogenic treatment has on metal stucture, as well as an overview of the actual process involved in treating parts. Also included are theories and conclusions regarding the optimum use of cryogenic tempering on steels, costs and feasability notwithstanding. All information is as up to date as possible, having been gathered from various scientific and industrial databases (no books were harmed during the preparation of this treatise).

The Case for Cryonics. The central idea of cryonics is simple : if sufficient biological structure in dying patients can be preserved at low temperature today ,then recovery and healing by future medical technology is ( in principle) possible. This proposition is based on diverse but solid evidence from the fields of neurobiology , low-temperature biology, and theoretical engineering.
FACT: Persistence of long term memory and personality does not require continuous brain function. Clinical experience demonstrates that memory and personality may be retained in persons who have had prolonged breaks in brain electrical activity.
FACT: Ultra-Low Temperatures can preserve fine brain structure indefinitely if the brain is carefully preserved in the first place.
FACT: Design outlines are already in place for cell repair technologies which could be used to recover patients retaining such brain structures, even if they are imperfectly preserved. Moreover, the development of these technologies appears inevitable, given the continuing advances in methods

Cryonics Association of Australia (CAA) The Cryonics Association of Australia offers support for Australian residents having suspension arrangements, or planning to make such arrangements, with any of the major American cryonics organisations and seeks to promote the concept generally in Australia. What Is Cryonics? Cryonics is the practice of maintaining patients currently classed as legally "dead" at extremely low temperatures for treatment by future medicine. What Does The Procedure Consist Of? Restoration of circulatory and respiratory function with a heart-lung resuscitator (Thumper) and/or heart-lung machine (blood pump and artificial lung).
Treatment of the patient with cryoprotectant drugs such as glycerol to minimise damage from the freezing process. Introduction of cryoprotectants is carried out with a heart-lung machine by circulation of a perfusate (blood substitute) carrying the cryoprotectant through the patient's tissues. This procedure is called perfusion.

    Cryonics
Up until the late 20th century, when an individual died, they had two choices:
  • Burial rot in the ground, or
  • Cremation go up in smoke. Now there's a third choice:
  • Cryonics be frozen in the hope that future technology and people will bring you back to life. A few companies are already offering the service. They freeze you slowly, eventually storing you in liquid nitrogen inside a stainless steel canister. You can pay up front, or else you can open a life insurance policy for an equal or larger amount and list the cryonics company as the beneficiary. The costs of storing people are not great. Once you've paid for the stainless steel canister and all the labor, transport, equipment and overhead for getting the deceased from their place of death to the cryonics morgue and into the canister, from that point in time onward the main cost is replacing liquid nitrogen that boils off. That is a very small cost. The cryonics company will have some of your money left over after you're in the canister. They can make money off the interest on the money left over. They can put money into your credit account to compensate for inflation and skim the rest off as profit. Cryonics companies, if set up very well legally and administratively, should be one of the most solid and long-lived businesses of today. You can freeze your whole body or you can save money and freeze just your head. If I recall correctly, the price for freezing your whole body is around US $100,000, but freezing your head costs much less, around $40,000.
  • 14. Cryonics Institute -- What Is Cryonics? A Brief Introduction
You think you know what cryonics is. But you probably don't.
    http://www.cryonics.org/reprise.html
    What Is Cryonics?
Y ou think you know what cryonics is. But you probably don't. We aren't just saying that. In a recent survey, most people who described themselves as "better informed than average about cryonics," said they thought an average cryonics suspension cost around $300,000 dollars. They were wrong. In fact, through insurance funding, an average middle-aged man in average middle-aged health may be able to arrange a suspension with CI at a cost lower than his monthly cable bill. But their mistake was understandable. After all, most people first hear about cryonics on Star Trek or in a science fiction novel. And the general idea they get there isn't always totally wrong: a cryonics patient is cooled down to the point where all physical life functions, and all physical decay, completely stops. Then, at some point in the future, when medical science has developed enough to bring them back in good health, the person is restored to good health. That's pretty much correct. There's only one problem with the way cryonics is presented in science fiction. Cryonics isn't fiction. It's science an emerging science, the logical conclusion to a growing accumulation of hard scientific facts.

Journal of Evolution and Technology . December 1998. Vol. 3 AN EXPLORATORY SURVEY EXAMINING THE FAMILIARITY WITH
AND ATTITUDES TOWARD CRYONIC PRESERVATION W. Scott Badger, Ph.D. ABSTRACT
A consumer survey designed to measure familiarity with and attitudes toward the idea of cryonics was conducted over the internet. A total of 517 responses were examined in an effort to clarify the relationships between (1 the reported level of familiarity vs. the accuracy of responses, and (2) demographic variables vs. attitudes and dispositions toward cryonics. Results indicate that (1) those claiming superior familiarity do not have superior knowledge, (2) a number of those surveyed have significant misconceptions regarding cryonics, and (3) important attitudinal differences exist between demographically diverse groups INTRODUCTION Cryonics has been defined as "the technology for freezing a person after a terminal illness or a fatal accident, in the hope that medical science will be able to revive that person in the future, when life extension and anti-aging have become a reality". Cryonic suspension is an emergency medical procedure designed to save lives (much like Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation), a last-ditch effort to forestall irreversible brain damage. Since the first individual was cryonically preserved in 1967, a handful of firms have sprung up offering cryopreservation and/or storage services to the general public.
