Exhibition Dates:
February 20 through March 24, 2003 Creativity Explored's LIT exhibition will feature unique, one-of-a-kind lamps and lanterns of various sizes, shapes, and colors. LIT will showcase how lighting can be fun, fanciful, exciting, and dramatic. Truly functional pieces of art, these lights are sure to appeal to people who fancy the whimsical, the elegant, or the different. The show is the result of a longtime project helmed by staff member Judith LaRosa and volunteer David Price Weldy. Come witness this bright spectacle, sure to torch all flickering notions of light and shadow, and what it means to be LIT. "The medium of light is to design what jewelry is to apparel. Who better then the artists at Creativity Explored to show us all how to glow, shine, and sparkle." - Robert Pintozzi of Mike SOMA, San Francisco

Some Guidelines with Linked Historical Examples
TRUE Creativity and Innovation consists of
SEEING
what everyone else has seen,
THINKING
what no one else has thought, and
DOING
what no one else has dared!"

START WITH THE CUSTOMER OR END USER:

The customer is always your first and most important creative challenge. Listen! Try to see the customers problems and needs from his point of view. Restate the problem and the customers needs in his terms and iterate until a consensus is reached. Ask not only what his problems are, but what special methods or tools he is presently using to solve them. Work together with or in the place of the end user or customer. Use fictitious product descriptions to stimulate ideas and discussion. Remember that effective market research and sales strategy requires just as much creativity, enthusiasm and perfection as does product development. IMPORTANCE OF ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS AND
MAKING A PROPER PROBLEM STATEMENT:
The problem as first stated is rarely the true problem. Ask at least five times. Always restate the problem as many ways as you can; change the wording, take different viewpoints, try it in graphical form. Describe the problem to laymen and also to experts in different fields.

Boosting Creativity New!!! Check out our 10 Steps for Boosting Office Creativity
Johann Sebastian Bach Listen to music by Johann Sebastian Bach. If Bach doesn't make you more creative, you should probably see your doctor - or your brain surgeon if you are also troubled by headaches, hallucinations or strange urges in the middle of the night. Brainstorm. If properly carried out, brainstorming can help you not only come up with sacks full of new ideas, but can help you decide which is best. Click here for more information on brainstorming and download our BrainStormer programme. Always carry a small notebook and a pen or pencil around with you. That way, if you are struck by an idea, you can quickly note it down. Upon rereading your notes, you may discover about 90% of your ideas are daft. Don't worry, that's normal. What's important are the 10% that are brilliant. If you're stuck for an idea, open a dictionary, randomly select a word and then try to formulate ideas incorporating this word. You'd be surprised how well this works. The concept is based on a simple but little known truth: freedom inhibits creativity. There are nothing like restrictions to get you thinking.

13. Artificial Creativity
An algorithmic approach to creativity in art.
http://www.cea.mdx.ac.uk/CEA/External/Staff96/John/artCreat.html
Artificial creativity:
An algorithmic approach to art
John Lansdown, Centre for Electronic Arts, Middlesex University Introduction With this background of long tradition in using mechanical and artificial means of assistance it is not surprising that, since computers first came on the scene forty-odd years ago, artists and others have tried to use them to augment their personal creativity. Alan Turing, who knew as much as anyone about the limitations of computational method and speaking before computers as we now know them existed, predicted that one day they would autonomously do creative things, like poetry writing. But as it happens, over the last thirty or so years the main artistic uses of computing have not been directed towards the compositional process - and certainly not towards the process in which the computer acts as an autonomous composer. This is, I think, a pity because it misses the most important attribute of the computer - something that makes it unique as an artefact. That is, its ability to make decisions according to rules. The nature of creativity Incidentally, some of the complexities of understanding (and, hence, modelling) creativity are pointed up when we compare Beethoven with Mozart. By common consent, both would be classed as extremely creative individuals. Yet the manifestations of their creativity were of very different sorts. Informally we can say that Beethoven's creativity extended as much to inventing new musical forms as to making wonderful examples of them. Mozart, on the other hand, tended to work almost exclusively within pre-existing formalisms. There is also some interesting recent evidence that, at least towards the end of his short life, he used a number-based approach to some aspects of his work - for example, structure and choice of key (Grattan-Guinness 1992). It is a moot point whether his numerological interest extended to using numbers in compositional method.

The racehorse Swale running the Kentucky Derby. (Link to photo at http://www.thoroughbredmemories.com The URL for this page is http://www.cs.indiana.edu/~leake/projects/swale.
Project Description
The SWALE project explores case-based reasoning (CBR) as a basis for creativity. In the CBR model of creativity, creativity comes from retrieving knowledge that is not routinely applied to a situation, and using it in a new way. In this view, the key issues for creativity are how to retrieve appropriate knowledge for novel uses and how to adapt it to fit novel circumstances. Depending on the retrieval and adaptation processes used, CBR can provide solutions anywhere along a spectrum of creativity, ranging from straightforward reapplications of old knowledge all the way to highly novel views. The task in which the SWALE project studies creativity is creative explanation of anomalous events. SWALE is a story understanding program that detects anomalous events and uses CBR to explain the anomalies. Its explanation process is based on the retrieval and application of cases storing prior explanations, called explanation patterns from its memory. This case-based reasoning process can take place at any point along the spectrum of creativity, from the completely non-creative application of a perfectly appropriate XP, to the very novel use of an inappropriate XP that must be totally revised to be usable.
