63. DUCKS!
Information on several different species of duck, ducks in general, breeder listings, and related links.
http://www.duck-birds.com/
DUCKS! Scientific classification: Ducks belong to the family Anatidae of the order Anseriformes.
Description: Duck is a name applied to several species of waterfowl. Ducks range from geese to swans and mallards. They are classified by their shorter necks and legs and webbed feet. Ducks live on all continents of the world and most of the world's islands except for Antarctica. The legs of most ducks are placed far apart and toward the rear which makes them awkward walkers but very efficient swimmers. The underplumage, or down, is buoyant and insulates the duck. The duck is kept water-resistant by frequent preening with oil from a gland which is found at the base of the tail feathers. Though most island ducks do not fly, most ducks of northern continents are highly migratory. Within a couple species the sexes are similar in color, but in most species the females have a drabber, more camoflauged appearance and males are brighter and more boldly patterned. Types of Ducks: The most familiar group of duck is the dabbling or surface-feeding ducks, which includes the mallard. The mallard is the ancestor of most domestic ducks. This group lives primarily on fresh water where they strain plants and small aquatic animals from the surface or from shallow bottoms that they can reach without diving. The pochard group includes the canvasback which nest on fresh water but in the winter they feed by diving. Another group of diving ducks includes the goldeneyes and the bufflehead which nest in tree holes. The group of duck called mergansers are specialized for catching fish with bills that have sharp, toothlike serrations for holding slippery prey. Most North American marine ducks are either eiders and scoters which nest in the far north and winter primarily at sea.

Audubon's complete seven volume text. Within the text you will see many names in capital letters. This was the convention that Audubon himself used in his text to set off proper names. We have preserved this convention in our text. Due to the inability of the ASCII character set to print Greek letters, the Greek words that Audubon used in his Family and Genus descriptions have been "Latinized": the letters delta-iota-sigma, for example, have become [dis]; the square brackets indicate that the editors have made this change. A special thank-you goes to Mr. Richard Buonanno, who originally converted the Bird's of America complete text, with references, to HTML format. The 50states.com website utilizes 29 files from

Introduction to the Aves
The Birds
The vertebrate class Aves includes the birds, an extremely distinctive and successful clade, with an estimated 9000 species worldwide, including the snowy owl pictured here. Although descended from the dinosaurs , birds have evolved remarkable specializations for flight: a unique "one-way" breathing system, light yet strong hollow bones, a skeleton in which many bones are fused or lost, powerful flight muscles, and most importantly feathers. Click on the buttons below to learn more about birds. You can navigate deeper into the birds by selecting "Systematics"!

Review Summary "Birds from all over come to a small sea side town to terrorize. The birds swoop form the sky to attack people violently and for vague reasons. Tipi Hedren was made by Hitchcock (the director) for movies after being spotted in a Pepsi commercial. Soon she was faced with fending off real live birds ready to kill in the famous bedroom scene. The Birds is Hitchcock at what he does best ... the scare."
Kelly Alleman, Resident The Birds Scholar
"Although it feels somehow unfinished and uncomplete, this late Hitchcock classic still offers some really exciting moments, especially the playground crows gathering scene, which is a perfect example of the talent that he has when it comes to slow progression of excitement."
Tero Hakulinen, Resident The Birds Scholar
