Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Biology (LCMB)
Lawrence E. Samelson, M.D. , Chief
samelson@helix.nih.gov
The Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Biology (LCMB) investigates normal cellular signal transduction and aberrancies in receptor-mediated signaling that are associated with neoplasias in humans and model systems. LCMB members study the role of oncogenes, growth factors, receptors and downstream effector molecules in neoplastic and normal cellular activation and proliferation. The goal of these studies is to define cellular activation pathways, to identify mechanisms which determine cellular differentiation or induce cancer, and to provide possible diagnostic and preventative measures to utilize at the clinical level. Current members of the Laboratory study such topics as lymphocyte activation, plasma cell biology, the Wnt pathway, receptor tyrosine kinases, TGF- b receptor signaling, and regulation of chemotaxis. Principal investigators in the LCMB are Carole A. Parent Jeffrey S. Rubin Stuart Rudikoff Ying Zhang , and Lawrence E. Samelson.

Digital biology was established in order to conduct research into, and develop technology based on, artificial life.
http://www.digitalbiology.com/
Pushing the boundaries of scientific illustration... Bring your exhibits to life! By utilizing advances in the game technology industry, 3d graphics hardware, and artificial life research, Digital Biology has developed proprietary computer animation software for creating real-time, photo-realistic interactive simulations of biological phenomena that push the boundaries of scientific illustration. The end result is multimedia content that is both highly entertaining and educational These custom simulations are designed to run on affordable desktop computers without the need for expensive, specialized hardware, and can be optionally displayed on large, high resolution screens for a captivating viewer experience. These simulations can also be continuously updated and customized to reflect exhibitor needs, and they provide the ideal medium for visualizing hard-to-observe natural phenomena or difficult-to-explain biological concepts. They can even be used to 'bring to life' extinct fauna. Key features of these simulations include:
  • real-time interaction among organisms as well as between organisms and the viewer

Saint Joseph College
Biology Department
Our Mission:
To train scientists and health care professionals to meet the technological challenges of the new millennium and to foster the advancement of women in the biological sciences. We offer comprehensive courses in the areas of field biology/ecology, biomedical sciences, and cell and molecular biology. In addition to formal course work we offer our undergraduate students the chance to participate in the on-going research of our faculty members. Experience has shown that participation in undergraduate research is the single most important aspect of the baccalaureate major in preparing students for graduate work and careers in the biological sciences.
Our Faculty:
The Saint Joseph College Biology Department is composed of professors from a wide variety of backgrounds. Our faculty members include an ornithologist , an aquatic ecologist, a cardiologist, a neuroscientist, a pharmacologist, a microbiologist and a geneticist. Many of our faculty have on-going research programs and have published their research findings in international journals. http://workbench.sdsc.edu/
The Biology WorkBench is a web-based tool for biologists. The WorkBench allows biologists to search many popular protein and nucleic acid sequence databases. Database searching is integrated with access to a wide variety of analysis and modeling tools, all within a point and click interface that eliminates file format compatibility problems. If you encounter any problems or find any bugs in the Biology Workbench, and are unable to send a bug report from within the software, please send a report to bwbhelp@sdsc.edu
Enter the Biology Workbench 3.2

Suggested Web Browser: Some people notice browser-related problems that go away when one clears the disk cache, and turning off the disk cache altogether when using the Biology Workbench might be a good idea. Also, your memory cache should be set as high as comfortable, as some of our pages can take up quite a bit of space in your browser. We suggest a minimum value of 10 megabytes for your memory cache, if possible. Structure Viewing: PDB structures can be viewed for PDBFinder records that are returned from a database search. One way to do this is to use the

Women in Biology Internet Launch Pages
home page: Welcome!
About this site : It provides a starting point for finding information for biologists who happen to be women. It is a list of bookmarks to the ample original content already available on the web. Many of the links are aimed towards women who are graduate students, postdocs, or more senior scientists, but there are also sites relevant to undergraduates or even high school students who may be contemplating a career in biology. These are intended to help women biologists with practical aspects of busy professional lives, and to provide food for thought in those quieter moments. You will find the history of women in science, aspects of science education, an extensive list of career resources for PhDs, postdocs, and beyond, and of course, information about the specific challenges women face in a sometimes chilly climate.
