Top Bar Hive Beekeeping
An Alternative to Conventional Beekeeping
What's New
This website is devoted exclusively to collecting and distributing information about beekeeping with top-bar hives (tbh's). Tbh's offer many beekeepers an inexpensive but satisfying way of keeping bees that produces less (but better) honey and more beeswax. Enjoy your visit to this website, learn about tbh's, and give them a try. These top bar hives are on a stand, which permits them to be worked without bending over.
Organization of the information
Files of frequently asked questions (FAQ's) are maintained at this website to answer most of your questions about this method of beekeeping. You may have other questions which, if you will ask, can be incorporated into the files as they are edited. These files of "frequently asked questions" and "not so FAQ's" pertaining to beekeeping in top bar hives (tbh's) were compiled and edited with the help of many others, especially Joel Govostes. I include my personal opinions, but also those of others who made comments to the tbh thread that was on BEE-L. Please send me any corrections or offer different opinions to these questions if you wish. I'll edit this file to include them. If you make your comments referenced to section and question number, it will aid me greatly. For example, you will see how I have inserted responses from Tim Haarmann throughout the files. I shall always be indebted to my email mentor, Paul Magnuson of Pretoria, South Africa, who gave me the

Beekeeping for Beginners
Gaining knowledge The beekeeper's year Costs Protect your investment ... The Bee Act Adapted from Agdex 616-23 also available in PDF format - 194 KB Beekeeping can be a hobby, a sideline operation or a full-time vocation. Keeping bees is a hobby practised by hundreds of people in Alberta and millions around the world. Beekeeping is a relatively inexpensive hobby that provides a sweet bonus each year. This factsheet is primarily a guide for someone who comes in contact with bees somewhat later in life. Figure 1. Queen with identification mark on thorax (left), worker bee (upper right) and drone (lower right). There are two considerations to weigh before committing yourself to beekeeping: the sting and the back. If you keep bees you will be stung by them and probably some of your family will get stung over time. For most people a bee sting hurts, and a brief period of discomfort follows. For others (about 0.4 per cent of the population) there is a danger of death from anaphylactic shock brought on by the bee sting. Frequently there are indications that a person is becoming highly allergic to bee stings, but occasionally the problem occurs unannounced. (Swelling at the site of the sting is normal; hives over the body, itching in areas of the body remote from the sting and shortness of breath are abnormal and cause for concern.) You do not have to be physically strong to keep bees, but it is helpful to have someone to help with the heavy lifting. If the stings can be endured and the lifting accommodated then by all means go ahead and become a beekeeper.

Beekeeping
Alberta honey is light-colored and has a delicate, subtle flavor desired by both domestic and foreign markets for consumption and industrial use (i.e. baking). Alberta produces approximately 35 per cent of Canada's honey. About 40 per cent of Alberta's honey comes from the Peace River region, where long summer daylight hours and an abundance of forage and canola crops (as nectar services) result in high honey yields per colony. A yield of 200 to 250 pounds of honey per colony is not uncommon. Currently, there are 750 beekeepers in the province with about 175,000 colonies of honey bees. Commercial beekeepers, those with at least 300 hives and who derive all or most of their income from beekeeping, comprise 18 per cent of Alberta's beekeepers. The balance are "side-liners" or hobbyists. In early spring, honey bees rely on plants such as dandelions and willows for their nectar and pollen while in summer, they feed primarily on canola, clover, alfalfa and fireweed. It is noteworthy to mention that honey bees make a major economic contribution through the sale of bee pollen which is collected in special traps by beekeepers, dried and sold for human consumption. As well, honey bees facilitate the cross-pollination of forage seed crops and canola. More recently, thousands of honey bee colonies are being used for the production of hybrid canola seed in Southern Alberta. The discovery of parasitic mites in North America has changed beekeeping in Alberta. With the closure of the United States border to the importation of honey bee packages and queens in 1987, more beekeepers in the province are starting to over-winter their bees. This practice involves either wintering bees indoors or outdoors, and some cases in Southern British Columbia. To replace winter losses and to accommodate colony expansion, pest-free stock can also be imported from Australia, New Zealand and Vancouver Island. In addition, a number of beekeepers in the province have developed a trade in Alberta-produced queens and nucleus colonies. As well, in 1993, queen honey bees from Hawaii became available, thereby providing beekeepers with an alternative source of early season queen bees.

document.writeln(myscroll.divStart) NATIONAL FOREST PROGRAMME
NEWSLETTER MESSAGE Dear Reader,

Over the past 10 years or so there has been a lot of talk worldwide about community involvement in forest management. In this edition I would like to give short account on the subject.
"One of the possible long term solutions to rnany of the problems that affect management of indigenous forests in Tanzania is to involve concerned cornmunities in the management of the forests. A forest area can only receive effective protection as long as benefits from the forest can reach the local community. Making the communities partners in natural forest resource management promises sustainability and will be cheaper". Since then I have been asked by a number of foresters what community involvement in forest management entails.
Community involvement in forest management has now been given prominence in the revised policy which was approved by the government on 5th March 1998. The pertinent policy statements on community involvement cover two areas, namely: management of government forest reserves and management of village forest reserves.

Home Up Observation Hives Cell-plug Queen Rearing ... Links John's Beekeeping Notebook Experiences of a Peace Corps Beekeeper in Fiji In the mid-1980's, I had an opportunity to serve in the Peace Corps doing rural development work in Fiji. My employer granted me a leave-of-absence. I sold my house and car in Houston, Texas, said goodbye to friends and began my service as a Peace Corps volunteer. Here are a few photos from my experiences. Fijian beekeeping is described on this page, and Fijian culture on the following pages. I was in Fiji for two years, mainly to provide beekeeping technical assistance to a village cooperative and farmers who were interested in beekeeping. Beekeeping was viewed by the Fiji government as a potential source of rural income that did not require a big investment to get started. Fiji was a honey-importing country and the country's goal was to be self-sufficient in honey production. An agricultural worker from New Zealand established some bee hives in the early 1980's and proved the area's potential for honey production. The U.S. Peace Corps was then asked to provide technical assistance. The cooperative had two employees for me to work with on a honey project called "Saivou Honey." I also worked with several farmers and a shopkeeper who owned their own hives.
