Armadillos
The word "armadillo" is of Spanish origin and refers to the armor-like covering of these animals. The skin is remarkably modified to provide a double-layered covering of horn and bone over most of the upper surface and sides of the animals, and some protection to the under parts and limbs. Young look like miniature adults when they're born, and within a few days their leathery skin hardens into armor. Under parts are covered with soft-haired skin. Hair sometimes projects from under the side plates.
The nine-banded armadillo is about the size of a cat.  Armadillos are not native to Florida, but are now common over most of the state.  Armadillos like forested or semi-open habitats with loose textured soil that allows them to dig easily.  They dig burrows for homes or to escape predators.  They eat many insects, or other invertebrates, and some plants.  They most often feed at night, and have very poor eyesight.

Much of the mixed hardwood forest has given up and turned brown. It has been very hot and dry for months. If this is part of the climate change, i will be sad. But the other part of me, the survivor, looks around to see just what plants are enjoying the dry, desert-like climate. One of the disastrous effects of the heat has been the invasion of the garden by the armadillo. I spotted the first armadillo in my first year here at Elixir Farm. We thought it was rare and wonderfully strange. It is not so much fun anymore. As the dryness spread across the hills and finally down into the river bottoms, the armadillo began to look for some food sources and discovered the soft and irrigated terraces where we grow the medicinal plants. At first, say three years ago, there were small holes in the grass and a bit of churning along the sawdust paths. The dog chased them, but never caught any and soon got bored with its lack of success. Then followed a couple of mild winters and boom! A population explosion. Each mother armadillo has four same sex babies with each birth cycle. The stream of 'dillos became unending, unceasing, relentless. We started exterminating, as rare seedlings were tossed night after night. Truly, this was a full-scale assault on the worm population so lovingly tending for years.

What's an armadillo?
The armadillo is a highly remarkable creature. A mammal. It's cute, really cute. There are many kinds of armadillos and they occur in South, Central and North America. Not in Europe, except in zoos.
This page contains mainly information about the nine-banded armadillo. That's the species that lives in the south of the United States.
The most remarkable visual characteristic of an armadillo is that its body is covered with scales (plates and bands) instead of body hair . It is
Nine-banded or long-nosed common armadillo
If you live in the southern United States, you are probably familiar with the nine-banded armadillo Dasypus novemcinctus ). This species rapidly extended its distribution thoughout the southern United States during the past 100 years.
It's the best-known armadillo species. It is highly adaptable. It inhabits South America and the southern United States.
  • John James Audubon discovered it in Texas in 1854. But the Aztecs already had their own name for the animal: the Aztec version of "turtle-rabbit". When human civilization advanced in North America, most mammals withdrew, often to remote areas in Mexico. Yet the nine-banded armadillo expanded its territory under this pressure!

Armadillo The nine-banded armadillo ( Dasypus novemcinctus ) is an odd-looking mammal covered with armored plates, and is about the size of a cat. Armadillos prolific rooting and burrowing can severely damage lawns and flower-beds. To reduce armadillo damage to your lawn keep watering and fertilization to a minimum. Moist soil and lush vegetation bring earth worms and insect larvae (armadillo candy!) to the surface of the soil. Armadillos can sometimes be enticed to move by watering areas adjacent to the damage site. Armadillos can also be excluded from small areas of extensive damage with fencing at least 2 feet high and with bottom buried at least 18 inches deep. It is lawful for a landowner to live-trap or humanely destroy nuisance armadillos although they are difficult to capture with live traps. Armadillos are not considered native to Florida and are, therefore, illegal to transport and release.

XENARTHRA Family DASYPODIDAE
Armadillos
Geographic Distribution This family of 8 living genera and 20 species is found from the southern United States to the Strait of Magellan. The sequence of genera presented here follows that of Cabrera 1957), who recognized two subfamilies: Dasypodinae for most genera and Chlamyphorinae for Chlamyphorus. A species in this family, Dasypus novemcinctus, is the only xenarthran that occurs in the United States. The word armadillo As a result of the armorlike covering, the body is heavy; the giant armadillo (Priodontes) weighs as much as 60 kg. Head and body length in the family is 125-1,000 mm and tail length is 25-500 mm. The scutes are brown to pinkish in color, and the pelage is grayish brown to white. Armadillos have small ears. The snout varies considerably in length and has a long, protrusible tongue. The hands have three, four, or five digits with powerful, curved claws, and the feet have five digits with claws. The lower bones of the legs are united proximally and distally. In females the mammae are usually located in the chest region, but an abdominal pair is occasionally present. The skull is flattened, and the lower jaw is elongate. The teeth are small, peglike, ever-growing, and numerous. There are usually 7-9 teeth in each half of the jaw, but

ORDER XENARTHRA
This order, formerly Edentata, includes armadillos, anteaters and sloths. All are found exclusively in the New World, although fossils are known from the Eocene of Europe and possibly Asia. In fact, some researchers believe Xenarthrans may have been distributed worldwide in the Cretaceous but evidently became restricted to South America and remained there for most of their history, evolving into numerous groups. The former order name (meaning "lacking teeth") is a misnomer, since only the anteaters lack teeth. In fact, the giant armadillo may have as many as 100 teeth. The name Xenarthra means "strange joint", referring to the extra articulations (called xenarthrales) found between the vertebrae connections. These are insect eaters with degenerate teeth, consuming their prey whole without chewing using long mucus-covered tongues. It is believed that the sloths, anteaters, and armadillos diverged at least 75-80 million years ago and that they are at least as distinct from one another as are carnivores, bats, and primates. Work by Sarich (1985) suggests that the Xenarthra separated from other placental mammals prior to the evolution of the latter into modern orders. Earliest species are known to exist in the Paleocene, 55 million years ago.
