Sacred Drums (Voodoo, Etc.)
Africa, of course, is the source of the fascinating rhythms and rituals of Haiti, Cuba, Brasil, Jamaica, Virgin Isles, Trinidad, and coastal Africa itself. The large conga drum has many variants ( goombay, etc.) but is essentially a form of the proverbial log with a skin stretched across. The conga, often made from pork or rum barrels if profane, could "talk" across great distances and drive dancers into a frenzy. It was introduced to the Americas in the early sixteenth century by Africans enslaved by the Spanish. Incidentally, the conga line, the first popular Latin dance in North America, stems from the cola, a serpentine carnival march from Cuba. The profane drum handles such mundane tasks as facilitating courtship, war, communication, recreation, etc. The sacred drum, through which the gods sing, is the tool of the priest, and through him, the people sing back to the gods. The beats tell the history and secrets of the cult but primarily lead to ecstatic emotional states. The ritual, drumming, and priest serve to affirm the power, joy, health, and togetherness of the people under the eyes of the ancient gods of Africa. The principal god mentioned in songs from Trinidad to Haiti, including secular calypsos, is Shango, responsible for life and death (and the credibility of the priest who summons him). The sacred drum is more likely than its profane counterpart to be carved elaborately from a tree trunk. In Haiti the

The mysteries of Vodun
Vodun is a religion that is prevalent in different parts of the world. Today it is a common ritual in f. ex. South Africa, many places in the US and in Latin America. Even though the roots of African vodun go back 6000 years, the secrets of the religion weren’t published before 50 years ago. What exactly is the mysterious religion Vodun? General background of vodun
The name voudon (often called voodoo by the public) is an African word for “Spirit”. Since there are many misunderstandings on what exactly voodoo is, I am going to call the ritual vodun in this text. This is because the word voodoo also is being used about an evil, imaginary religion where “voodoo dolls” and bizarre rituals are being used. This type of ritual was made up in honour for the Hollywood movies. In other words, vodun and voodoo is the same thing, if you don’t mix it up with the “Hollywood-voodoo”. In Africa the roots of voudon may go back 6000 years. The African slaves also brought their religion with them when they were forcibly shipped to Haiti and other islands in the West Indies. Today, vodun is still being practised on these islands. Voodoo was actively practised during the colony times. Many priests were either killed or imprisoned, because the Euro-Christian/Muslims felt threatened. In 1884 S. St. John wrote a book about the voudon rituals, and he described it as an evil religion with human sacrifice, cannibalism etc. This book was one of the reasons why Hollywood started to make horror-movies with Voodoo as a popular subject.

Category Description The ancient religions and divination systems that developed in West Africa among the Ewe, Fon, Kaye, and Tchamba people of Dahomey, Togo, and Benin, focusing on worship of the Loas (Lwa). Sevi Lwa is also called Vodun, Voodoo, Woodoo, Voudou, or Budu names that come from an African word for "spirit." Vodun's diaspora roots go back to the West African people who brought their religion with them when they were forcibly enslaved in Brazil, Haiti, Cuba, and other islands in the West Indies. Like most African Traditional Religions, Vodun is currently practiced under several names on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. In the Western Hemisphere, Vodou has also been influenced by the Kongo and Bantu cultures of the Congo River Basin; by the indigenous Arawaks, Caribs and Tainos; and, to some extent, by the Roman Catholicism of the colonizing French.
