By Trần Chung Ngọc I The study of Catholicism and Communism revealed surprising similarities in the nature and characteristics of both ideologies. As Catholicism had been seen as the spiritual power of Europe for almost 2,000 years and Marxist ideology was thought to have been originated from the European industrial age, both were seen by many as consanguineous brothers . Having taken birth in different historical settings and times, the brothers became ideological enemies: extreme monotheism vs. extreme atheism. Being stemmed from a same cultural root, both shared an affinity for utopian supremacy, either “Red” or “Black”. They will tolerate no other color in this multifaceted world. The similarities between the two ideologies are cited in the following examples:

The Reconciliation of Zen and Pure Land Buddhism
by Ven. Dr. Karuna Dharma
I am quite pleased to follow Rev. Thich Tam Tue after his beautiful lecture last Sunday on Amitabha Buddha. It seems so odd that Pure Land and Zen should be reconciled, since their philosophic basis and their view on life vary so much. But in China, Korea and Vietnam, these two schools did come to form a syncretic, holistic view of Buddhism. And this is the topic that I have chosen to speak on today. First, I should mention a little about the history of Buddhism in Vietnam. Buddhism came to Vietnam from India by sea in the first century of the common era, during the time of King Asoka, India's great Buddhist emperor. They brought, of course, Hinayana Buddhism, today known as Theravada Buddhism. Two hundred years later a Chinese community was well established. From a description of a Chinese convert, who wrote that the monks wore saffron robes, shaved their heads and ate only one meal a day, it is clear that Theravadan monks were serving their community.

Within Zen Buddhism, there are five major lines active today:
Vietnamese Bodhidharma
  • Ch'an (Chinese) Master Sheng-yen from Taiwan is the best-known Chinese master active. His writings are exquisitely clear. Vietnamese Folks are often surprised to know that Vietnamese Buddhism is derived from Ch'an rather than from Southern Buddhism. Well-known exemplars of this tradition include the late Ven. Thich Thien-An and of course Thich Nhat Hahn , author of "Old Path, White Clouds" and many other books. Rinzai Derived from the Ch'an master Lin Chi, the Japanese Rinzai school is known for extensive use of koans Joshu Sasaki Roshi is the senior Rinzai master in the US; several masters who teach in the West have Rinzai and Soto credentials, and one combines Rinzai and Chogye. Soto Derived from the T'sao tung school, brought to Japan by the Zen Master Eihei Dogen, this school emphasizes shikan-taza and the formula of practice = enlightenment.

Temple Vietnam was founded in 1986 when a group of 25-30 Vietnamese people from the Boston area met weekly for prayer in one another's homes. It opened at its present site in 1991 and maintains ties with other Vietnamese temples in the state and with the international Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Although the temple does not have a resident monk, the spiritual leader is Thich Nguyen Hanh of Houston, Texas. The temple observes a form of Mahayana Buddhism that seeks to combine aspects of Pure Land Buddhism with the Zen tradition, according to one of its founders, Dr. Chi Nguyen. Occupying a former day-care center located between Jamaica Plain's Forest Hills section and Roslindale Square, this temple is the first permanent place of worship for the area's Vietnamese Buddhists. It was remodeled in 1993 and now includes a temple/meditation room, a function room, a garden and a parking area. About 50 people come to the weekly services, but for larger celebrations, the temple accommodates 300-500 people. The temple's members, about 10 percent of whom are ethnic Chinese from Vietnam, come from across the greater Boston area. The temple is governed by a six-member board of directors and its president, Mrs. Bich Nguyen. Temple Vietnam offers bilingual services on the first Sunday of the month, meditation and Dharma talks, occasional Saturday meditation retreats, and, on Sunday afternoon, classes in which children learn the Vietnamese language, history, geography and tradition. Dr. Nguyen says that all forms of meditation are welcome. "What matters is not the method but if they bring you back to your true self." All activities are open to the public.

Just off historic Dorchester Avenue, where Vietnamese markets alternate with Irish pubs, Chua Luc Hoa dominates the residential streets of Greenwood and Park with its impressive garden and towering statue of Kuan Yin. The center offers weekly services in Vietnamese each Sunday at 11 A.M. for Dorchester's growing Vietnamese population and for a small number of Chinese, Laotian, and Cambodian Buddhists from around Boston. Bao Truong serves as the spiritual director of the center. Although Bao is not trained as a monk, he lived in a temple in Vietnam from age 3 to age 20. Shortly after arriving in the United States, Bao began organizing this temple under the guidance of Thic Guiac Duc a Vietnamese monk, Professor at UMass Boston, and President of the Vietnamese American Buddhist Congress. Together, their vision is to "positively change the nature of the neighborhood through Buddhism." Although the building suffered a major fire before the community purchased it in 1994, the light-blue triple-decker has been renovated and now includes a main temple/meditation hall as well as a kitchen, dining and office space, bedrooms, and an altar honoring deceased relatives. The community plans to expand the temple with a permanent bandstand for outdoor services. Summertime celebrations, such as the Vietnamese Mother's Day, often draw hundreds of people and overflow the center. For larger ceremonies, the community has invited monks from California and India to worship with them.

Vietnamese Religions
Tolerance for different beliefs is a key feature in Vietnamese religions. There is no definite national religion, and in the Constitution it is stated that everyone has complete freedom to choose the religion he or she fancies. Therefore, you will find, on your visit to Vietnam, that there is a whole scala of religions there that are practiced. The Confucian, the Taoist, the Buddhist, or all three in one, the Hoa Hao Buddhist, the Cao-Dai, the Catholic, the Protestant, the Ancestor worshipper, the Animist; all are living side by side here in Vietnam without fear to practice what they feel is their belief without restriction.
The altar
The candle is a symbol for the unity of the soul in the main religion which is a mix of the following: Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. On the altar of a Vietnamese (at home) aloe wood is burned, children and grand children invite their ancestors home to enjoy the offerings laid out before them. The incense smoke rising to the heavens symbolizes communication with ancestors. (burning incense is to remember people of times past). There is a tray with five fruits which symbolizes that life is like the seasons and it brings forth life. There is also a flower vase on the ancestors' altar, the flowers of which are perfumed and rises to the ancestors. Very popular flowers are the likes of lotus or lilies. There are other objects as well which are also offerred to ancestors.

Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam INSTITUTE FOR THE PROPAGATION OF THE DHARMA APPEAL FOR DEMOCRACY FOR VIETNAM By the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam On the 4880th Commemoration of the National Ancestors Hung Kings and the world's welcome of the 3 rd millennium Buddhism came to the world 2544 years ago to save all beings from sufferings. It was a giant progress in thought as well as in action of the Indian society in particular and humankind in general. Buddhism liberates mankind from ignorance, fear and slavery to the gods or extremist ideologies, and from cruel oppression and inequalities in all social systems. Along with his presence on earth, Buddha's teachings overturned all theistic schools and all nihilistic, materialist, sceptic and fatalistic doctrines, putting humans directly between heaven and earth such that they save themselves and liberate others. There are no asocial factors in Buddhism. Buddhists always respect people and will stand up to protect them, to fight against injustices, or social inequalities that are the causes of the suppression of the people's rights to live, the barriers to the desire to study for progress, the blockade against the practice of Kindness, Charity, Wisdom and Determination, the Bodhisattva vow to save the world and reach final enlightenment. From the above salvation guiding principle, Vietnamese Buddhism has developed more active commitment to protect the people and the country. The history of Vietnamese Buddhism, within Vietnamese history in the past 2000 years, has demonstrated many times that the concepts of Help the People, Help the Country, Help the Teachings have intertwined into the Vietnamese Buddhists ways of how to live and act.
