Among the available historical documents is the Thien Uyen Tap Anh (A Collection of Outstanding Figures of the Zen Community), a fourteenth-century Chinese-character text. It was discovered in 1927 by Tran Van Giap, a noted Vietnamese Buddhist scholar, who used it as his main documentary evidence to produce his historical account, written in French and published in 1932, of Vietnamese Buddhism from its beginnings to the thirteenth century. Giap argued that the type of Buddhism that flourished in Vietnam was Zen and that in Vietnam, from the sixth to the thirteenth century, Zen Buddhism was divided into three schools: the Vinitaruci, Vo Ngon Thong, and Thao Duong schools. Since then Giap's historical reconstruction of Vietnamese Buddhism has become the standard view among Buddhist scholars in Vietnamese, Chinese, and Western languages. Cuong Tu Nguyen, who holds a Ph.D. in comparative religion from Harvard and currently teaches at George Mason University, sets out to challenge this received wisdom. The fundamental error of Giap and his followers, according to the author of

News Social Life Economy People Tran Nhan Tong - National Hero, Philosopher and Poet During the second and third wars of resistance against the Mongols, king Tran Nhan Tong (1258 - 1308) became the banner uniting the people's hearts and minds and led the people of Dai Viet (the Great Viet) to defeat the enemy of double strength. The king was also a philosopher of Vietnamese Buddhism, the founder of the Truc Lam Yen Tu (Yen Tu Bamboo Forest) Chan sect and a poet with a lofty and free soul. Tran Nhan Tong, whose real name was Kham, was the eldest son of king Thanh Tong. He was born in 1258, the year Thai Tong and Thanh Tong defeated the Mongol invaders in the first war of resistance. Mention is made to Tran Nhan Tong as, first and foremost, a hero of national salvation. He was on the throne for 14 years from 1279 to 1293. During that period, the Dai Viet was faced with great threats: the second and third invasions of the Mongols. Throughout the two wars of resistance, Tran Nhan Tong became the symbol of national unity and led the Dai Viet people to surmount numerous difficulties and brought the struggle to a brilliant victory. He proved to be an excellent strategist and, at the same time, a brave general in the battlefield in the two wars. It was at the initial stage of the war in 1285 when our force was in a disadvantageous position, Tran Nhan Tong wrote on the side of a warship the verse that reflected the will and faith in the great strength of our troops:

Mr. Tran Duc Luong, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam
Mr. Phan Van Khai, Prime Minister of the SRV, and
Mr. Nong Duc Manh, Chairman of the National Assembly of the SRV Gentlemen, I still remember vividly when our Buddhists held the ceremony to commemorate the Hung Vuong Ancestry for the first time in early 1946, we unanimously sent a telegram to compatriots who were fighting [the French colonists] in the South: "We encourage and wish all of you, our brothers and sisters, unity, valor, and incisiveness to fight to the end for the independence of Vietnam and show the civilized countries the doctrine of rescuing fellow-men out of love." I still remember vividly in April 1946 the Vietnamese Buddhist Association was formed to join Buddhist followers with compatriots in the entire country in "the war against the three evils: "Hunger, Illiteracy, and Foreign Invaders."
