It sees its main function as facilitating the spiritual quest of its members.

Many Unitarian Universalists have been raised to respect all people (or at least try) and believe it is wrong to force beliefs on others. UU's are rarely taught how to spread the word about their amazing communities they are like great restaurants without any advertising. Imagine that! A word of mouth religion.

About Unitarian Universalism About Unitarian Universalism:
  • Frequently Asked Questions We are Unitarian Universalists The Flaming Chalice Dictionary of Unitarian and Universalist Biography ... About the UUA With its historical roots in the Jewish and Christian traditions, Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religion that is, a religion that keeps an open mind to the religious questions people have struggled with in all times and places. We believe that personal experience, conscience and reason should be the final authorities in religion, and that in the end religious authority lies not in a book or person or institution, but in ourselves. We are a "non-creedal" religion: we do not ask anyone to subscribe to a creed. Our congregations are self-governing. Authority and responsibility are vested in the membership of the congregation. Each Unitarian Universalist congregation is involved in many kinds of programs. Worship is held regularly, the insights of the past and the present are shared with those who will create the future, service to the community is undertaken, and friendships are made. A visitor to a UU congregation will very likely find events and activities such as church school, day-care centers, lectures and forums, support groups, poetry festivals, family events, adult education classes and study groups.

Emerson became one of America's best known and best loved 19th century figures. New: Understanding Emerson's essay, "Self-Reliance" From these pages, you'll find the best of information about Ralph Waldo Emerson on the Net. Many of the links are to information on other sites; some of the links are to original material or etexts found on this site. I've organized the material by sub-topic as follows (click on any topic): Ralph Waldo Emerson Emerson: Biographies Emerson by Paul More Emerson: Portraits ... Emerson: Commercial These pages have existed, in some form or another, since 1995, when I first discovered that there was a wealth of Ralph Waldo Emerson material on the Net, all very difficult to find. My goal for these pages, since then, has been to aid people interested in Ralph Waldo Emerson and the Transcendentalists by identifying and organizing that information.

    Unitarian Universalism
A liberal and diverse religious organization comprised of mostly atheists (or non-theists), agnostics, Humanists, liberal Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, Neopagans, etc.
  • Belief in Deity: Very diverse beliefs - Unitarian Universalists welcome all deity beliefs as well as nontheistic beliefs. Some congregations are formed for those who share a common belief, e.g. Christianity.
  • Incarnations: Very diverse beliefs, including belief in no incarnations, or that all are the embodiment of God. Some believe Christ is God's Son, or not Son but "Wayshower."
  • Origins of universe/life: Diverse beliefs, but most believe in the Bible as symbolic and that natural processes account for origins.
  • After death: Diverse beliefs, but most believe that heaven and hell are not places, but are symbolic. Some believe heaven and hell are states of consciousness either in life or continuing after death; some believe in reincarnation; some believe that afterlife is nonexistent or not known or not important, as actions in life are all that matter.

Why do we gather? We are surrounded by a culture that favors form over content, market value over merit, attitude over feeling. A culture built around cliches. Often when we utter an original thought we are greeted with stares. When we question the way things are, we are seen as inconvenient company. A few of us realized maybe we weren't c r a z y and started this group. We celebrate the truth in all its forms, clear thinking, imagination, compassion and spiritual living. We gather to relax, center ourselves, ask questions to get our creative juices flowing, walk the earth, make art and music, do bodywork, cook, eat, laugh and sometimes cry. We are ourselves. The world is new again.
