    An apple a day is all well and good, but 40 minutes of daily meditation might prove far more effective in keeping the doctor away. The real surprise? Your doctor might just be the one to give you this advice. Medical researchers in the United States have been studying meditation for more than 35 years, and the growing body of evidence is finally sinking in. One type of practice, Transcendental Meditation (TM), has shown particular promise. A recent study in the American Heart Association journal Stroke reported that regular practice of TM could reduce the buildup of fat deposits in artery walls (and therefore reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke), even without a change in diet or exercise. Worldwide, more than 600 studies have focused on the effects of TM over the past 30 years. Many of these took place at the College of Maharishi Vedic Medicine in Fairfield, Iowa. But as practitioners of all types of meditation know, you don't need a litany of research abstracts or meta-analyses to confirm the good it does. Likewise, those experiencing great pain are often eager to try out any possible solution, especially one so convenient, cost-effective, and free of side-effects.

    Lelystad, The Netherlands Previous research has revealed that, in the course of ontogenesis, the randomly occurring, isolated, low frequency Rapid Eye Movements (REMs) of the undiffer-entiated sleep of the premature are gradually ordered in groups of high-frequency REMs, characteristic of mature REM sleep (Petre-Quadens, 1967; 1969; 1978; Petre-Quadens & De Lee, 1974; Petre-Quadens, De Lee & Remy, 1971). This obser-vation has led to the hypothesis that there exist two functionally different types of REMs in REM sleep: the high frequency (HF) REMs with an interval of less than one second, reflecting the "maturity" or "order" of brain functioning; and the low frequency (LF) REMs with an interval of more than one second, reflecting "random noise" in the brain. Subsequent research has supported this hypothesis. TM and TM-Sidhi techniques, when practised 20–40 minutes twice a day, result in improved scores on tests of cognitive and affective functioning. Improve-ments took place regardless of the age of the subjects, even on variables like "fluid intelligence" and "field independence," which normally do not improve after the age of 17 (Aron, Orme-Johnson & Brubaker, 1981; Dillbeck, Assimakis, Raimondi, Orme-Johnson & Rowe, 1986). Methods Subjects Six male TM-Sidhi practitioners, aged between 31 and 39, with different educa-tional backgrounds, served as experimental subjects (Table 1). They had been prac-tising TM for an average period of 139 months (range, 94–199 months), and the advanced TM-Sidhi program for an average period of 87 months (range, 76–96 months). All but the youngest were teachers of the TM technique. The author was one of the experimental subjects. The experimental group was part of a group of 230 male TM-Sidhi practitioners, predominantly Europeans, who resided at the TM academy in Vlodrop (Limburg, The Netherlands). There, they worked full-time and, in addition, practised an extensive TM-Sidhi program collectively. Four of the six experimental subjects reported clear experiences of the TM-Sidhis and of "witness-ing" their night’s sleep, and two reported less clear experiences (Table 1).

    Background
    A great problem in combat pilot training all over the world has been that psychological tests have not been able to reveal the deeply seated disturbances that make persons unable to keep the head cool in highly stressful situations. In Sweden, a major part (up to 80%) of the pilot trainees failed year after year. With few exceptions, the reason was psychological inaptitude revealed under demanding flight situations. The situation has been similar in other air forces, which meant great economic losses considering the high costs of pilot training. Therefore the Swedish Air force sponsored the development of a test designed to reveal hidden psychological disturbances. The test used was the "Defence Mechanism Test" (DMT) originally created by Ulf Kragh. It was modified in important respects by the psychologist Thomas Neuman and was introduced in the Air Force 1970. As there are fundamental differences between Kragh's method and the way Neuman applies it, we will call it "DMT-Neuman".

    When I first submitted my session topic I meant to emphasize the contribution a transdisciplinary approach to interdisciplinary studies can add to the holistic development of students, ie. to the development of what has traditionally been understood as wisdom. By wisdom, I mean broad comprehension and an integrated personality. The term transdisciplinary in this context, refers to a set of principles, expressed in a common language, that can be located in all disciplines. In this session I wanted to describe a unique transdisciplinary approach that can supplement the thematic courses used in many learning communities, because research at our university has indicated this approach facilitates the growth of wisdom in students, as indicated for example by longitudinal research using Loevinger's ego development scale. I will get to this outcome, but before I do, I want to begin on another tack, because in looking at current research on learning communities I came across an issue that is also related to the transdisciplinary approach I wanted to describe in this session, but to a very practical challenge that occurs among faculty from different disciplines teaching theme based, interdisciplinary courses. This is the challenge of faculty with different training and backgrounds communicating effectively with each other (and therefore with the students).     How much time will it take out of my day?

    Plasma cortisol is a stress hormone. The mission statement of The Enlightened Sentencing Project is to bring light to the field of rehabilitation by teaching offenders highquality and holistic self-development, health-promoting and stress-reducing techniques, including and especially the transcendental meditation technique. Every human being can be liberated from within and every offender should be given the tools to become fully enlightened, empowering him/her to make maximum contribution to society in the most positive way.

    History
    There is a trend in contemporary jurisprudence for courts to take a more therapeutic approach to the law and court practice.
