theosophy
[Gr.,=divine wisdom], philosophical system having affinities with mysticism
and claiming insight into the nature of God and the world through direct
knowledge, philosophical speculation, or some physical process. This system of thought differs from many other philosophical positions in that it begins with an assumption of the absolute reality of the essence of God, from which it deduces the essentially spiritual nature of the universe. Other assumptions frequently found in theosophical doctrine are that God is the transcendent source of all being and all good; that evil exists in the world because of human desire for finite goods and may be overcome by complete absorption in the infinite; and that sacred writings and doctrines

I. Group Profile
  • Name: Theosophy
  • Founder: Helena Petrovna Blavatsky
  • Date of Birth:
  • Birth Place: Ukraine
  • Year Founded: The ideas of Theosophy can be traced back to ancient times, but the most widely known group, The Theosophical Society, was founded on November 17, 1875.
  • Brief History: Theosophy is the study of the teachings of the Masters or Mahatmas. It is a method of studying the Ancient Wisdom, a way of pursuing the ultimate truth. The Mahatmas are members of a superhuman group, "The Great White Brotherhood." These adepts (Mahatmas) have obtained perfection, and committed their lives to showing us the way to perfection. Theosophy, as a subject of study, became an organized group in the late 19th century when the Theosophical Society was founded by Henry Olcott and H.P. Blavatsky. The Theosophical Society became a popular and powerful group throughout the world, especially in America and India. Most of the society's practices and beliefs were determined by Blavatsky and her writings. During her lifetime, she wrote numerous articles and letters, and she also authored the major works: Isis Unveiled The Secret Doctrine and The Voice of the Silence The Secret Doctrine became the major source of information to all those interested in Theosophy (Campbell,1980:31). Her writings combined many types of existing beliefs (both western and eastern) into a comprehensive and structured system of study.

A Wonder of Ancient India: The Mahabharata
By Nhilde Davidson Daunted by its size and a misconception that an intimate understanding of Hinduism was needed, I never considered taking the Mahabharata off the shelf. By accident I tuned into an episode of an Indian television production of the Mahabharata (subtitled in English) and I was hooked. Ninety-six one-hour episodes later (and many more hours of reading) I am still enthralled and continue delving into this fascinating epic. Its appeal is on many different levels and, through the ages, ascetics and scholars alike have dedicated their lives to studying, collating, and translating the varied and voluminous material. When the series aired on Indian television, railway schedules had to be adjusted as each week almost the entire country sat in front of a TV. Similarly, most things ground to a halt when the Ramayana was serialized. We all love a hero heroic action appeals to children and adults alike and these epics are heroic. On a deeper level it is the philosophical depth and the psychological profundity that endure, keeping the stories alive in the soul, drawing one back again and again. The epic is about a Holy War fought on the fields of Kurukshetra at the junction between the end of the Bronze Age and the beginning of the Iron or Kali Age. The Kali Yuga is said to have begun with the death of Krishna on February 17, 3102 BC thus dating the war to 3138 BC (in the epic Krishna died 36 years after the Great War). However, dating the epic is an ongoing debate. The extant written versions can be traced to the period 400-100 BC when the present form was settled on. The

A term derived from the Greek theos ('god') and sophia ('wisdom') which means wisdom of or about God. In a general sense, theosophy refers to a broad spectrum of occult or mystical philosophies, often pantheistic in nature; i.e., a religious philosophy or speculation about the nature of the soul based on mystical and occult insights into the nature of God. The Western theosophical tradition may be said to be derived from the hermetic tradition of the Renaissance and post-Renaissance and is characterized by an emphasis on the hidden tradition passed down in a succession from the ancients. This tradition is thought to provide a key to nature and to humanity's place in the universe. More specifically, the term Theosophy refers to the beliefs of a religious sect, the Theosophical Society, its offshoots, and the doctrines held by its members, which incorporated aspects of Buddhism and Brahmanism. The most important early figure in the movement was Helena Petrovna Blavatsky , who, along with Colonel Henry Steel Olcott (1832-1907) and William Q. Judge

    Theosophy and mysticism for Joyceans
Jorn Barger April 2001 (updated Jan2002) This page will explore the impulse to mysticism and magic in Western history, especially in relation to art, with special reference to late 19thC Ireland and Joyce, Yeats, and George 'AE' Russell. Briefly, we'll assume that there are subjective experiences of beauty, transcendence, inspiration, magical action and occult perception (including communication with the dead) that conventional philosophies (science, religions) don't account for satisfactorily... and that conventional political systems don't nurture satisfactorily. Yeats chose a path of magic, using symbols to evoke the shared mind and shared memory of humanity; AE chose mysticism, and Joyce rejected both. Yeats sought to create a new Celtic occultism "mystical rites a ritual system of evocation and meditation to reunite the perception of the spirits, of the divine, with natural beauty" [sb-xxvi] using "initiation... to fix the images of their poems and to so weave image to image that, when one is named, all float up in the mind and... weave all the poems into one great epic..." [sb-xxvii] "this philosophy would find its manuals of devotion in all imaginative literature, and set before Irishmen for special manual an Irish literature which, though made by many minds, would seem the work of a single mind, and turn our places of beauty or legendary association into holy symbols." [anj100] "a war on materialism, decadence, triviality" [rff162, Nov1898]

    95. "The Eternal Self In Shakespeare's Sonnets" By Madeline Clark
    Essay by Madeline Clarke.
    http://www.theosophy-nw.org/theosnw/arts/ar-mclk3.htm
The Eternal Self in Shakespeare's Sonnets
By Madeline Clark He who does not yet know the Shakespearean sonnets has before him an encounter with spacious thoughts that will profoundly stir his heart. As unpremeditated as the song of a bird, this matchless verse wells forth, now eloquent with human feeling, now adorned with the lyric beauty of universal nature, now appealing to the sense of truth and justice; but always with an undertone of something beyond and within the words that leaves the reader pondering. And if he is willing to keep on pondering over the space of a few weeks, months, or even years, he may in time come to identify himself with the "I" of the sonnets, and see himself in very truth as the archetypal man about whom the poet might have been writing. For it cannot be said of these sonnets that "he who runs may read." Their import is often obscure and cannot be come at by means of the reasoning faculty alone. Perhaps, too, the heart is involved. Not the heart that is shallowly linked with the emotions, but the "great antique heart" of man that the old sages used to think of as the seat of the deeper aspects of the mind and, in fact, its guide and mentor. Scholars have long been intrigued by the ambiguity of the sonnets, and have wanted to get at their essence; but most of them at first approach have been stopped dead in their tracks by the question: To whom were the poems addressed? For these beautiful odes were certainly dedicated to an admired object. So, as in the case of the famous (or infamous) Baconian controversy touching the identity of the poet himself, conflicting theories arose in regard to the object of the sonnets; the champions of the Earl of Southampton having a case as watertight as do the adherents of the Earl of Pembroke, to say nothing of the Dark Lady. While at first sight these speculations might seem superficial and relatively inessential, they may be so only because of the purely historical and mundane solutions offered. In reality, the question seems to this writer to be of first importance to be, in fact, a key to the philosophical and metaphysical interpretation of the sonnets themselves.

    96. The Theosophical Society-Adyar - Fundamentals Of Theosophy
theosophy is the body of truths which forms the basis of all religions, and which cannot be claimed as the exclusive possession of any.
    http://ts-adyar.org/theosophy.html
Theosophy is the body of truths which forms the basis of all religions, and which cannot be claimed as the exclusive possession of any. It restores to the world the Science of the Spirit, teaching man to know the Spirit as himself and the mind and body as his servants. It illuminates the scriptures and doctrines of religions by unveiling their hidden meanings, and thus justifying them at the bar of intelligence, as they are ever justified in the eyes of intuition. It puts death in its rightful place, as a recurring incidence in an endless life, opening the gateway to a fuller and more radiant existence.
What, then, are the mains tenets of Theosophy?
Consciousness, Universal and Individual First, that the universe is not just a place where nature's forces operate by chance. Every event that has happened from the beginning of time has happened according to certain laws inherent in the universe. These laws are the expression of a Consciousness . Everything that exists, from the electron to the largest star, is impregnated with Consciousness. This Fundamental Reality is so far beyond our grasp that sages and saints have called it by contradictory terms. Many have termed it 'God;' but some have called it Law, Heaven, the Great Architect, Evolution. Each man, according to his temperament and his experience, must determine how he will regard this Consciousness which directs everything. Let us call it
