What is Usui-Do?
Usui -Do is a meditative, spiritual system. Its purpose is to maintain unity of the self (body, mind and spirit) through harmony and balance. This is performed in an unconditional and nonjudgmental manner. A set of "affirmations" form the basis of the entire system. This is what the affirmations look like in Japanese exactly as Usui himself arranged them!
Usui -Do is a close reconstruction of Usui's system as presented by Yuji Onuki, a student of Toshihiro Eguchi who gave training to both Melissa Riggall and Dave King in Morocco in 1971. Additional information was provided by several surviving students of Usui including a Tendai Buddhist nun who was born in the 29th year of Meiji (1897) and who had trained with and assisted Usui-sensei from 1920 until 1926. The nun remembers Usui's departure for Fukuyama in 1926 and confirmed that Usui had received Tendai Buddhist training at an early age and remained Tendai all his life. In 1995 Melissa and Dave further studied with Tatsumi, a student of Hayashi from 1927 to 1931. Tatsumi owned notes copied from those of Hayashi some of which were created by Usui himself. Here is a brief history: Mikao Usui was born on August 15, 1865 in the village of Taniai

Buddhism originated in India in the 6th century BC. It consists of the teachings of the Buddha, Gautama Siddhartha. Its central theories are that human life is full of suffering due to worldly desires, illness, death and the loss of loved ones. By getting rid of desires and attachments, one can achieve the state of enlightenment (Nirvana) and escape suffering and the circle of reincarnations. Buddhism was imported to Japan in 538 or 552 in form of a present from the king of the friendly Korean kingdom of Kudara (or Paikche). The new religion was welcomed by the ruling nobles while the common people did not understand its complex theories. After a few conflicts with the native religion Shinto , the two religions soon were able to co-exist harmonically and even complemented each other. During the Nara period , the great Buddhist monasteries in Nara , for example the Todaiji, gained strong political influence which was one of the reasons for the government to move the capital first to Nagaoka (784) and then to Kyoto (794). Nevertheless, the problem of politically ambitious and even militant monasteries remained a main issue for the governments during many centuries of

An Assessment of Jacqueline Stone’s Original Enlightenment and the Transformation of Medieval Japanese Buddhism James Dobbins (Oberlin College) Society for the Study of Japanese Religion
Chicago AAS Annual Meeting, March 23, 2001

Jacqueline Stone’s book on , or “original enlightenment thought,” is a work of both scope and detail. It glides over its subject matter, sometimes pausing to take a close-up look at things, but other times moving in wide arcs to get a panoramic view. It tends to be a book about “forests” rather than “trees,” though it does examine its fair share of “trees” along the way. Overall, I would describe it as one of the most thought-provoking and multifaceted books I have read in a long time. In content the work is structured around the theme of hongaku , original enlightenment, which according to Stone was not so much a philosophical principle as a mode of discourse that operated pervasively in medieval religion. Its base was Tendai Buddhism, mainly among the lineages and traditions of Mt. Hiei, but it also reached widely into other medieval circles, including the so-called new schools of Kamakura Buddhism such as Nichiren. Stone examines this theme in its various guises and manifestations, and charts how it developed and diversified, and also what social mechanisms were at work enhancing, preserving, and transmitting it.

The Usui Memorial
What are the origins of TJR?
Traditional Japanese Reiki is not an oral tradition , it was documented in some detail by Usui himself. It was a requirement in his day that each student at the teacher level copy the notes made by his teacher; these were carefully checked for accuracy. Considerable teaching practice was also enforced before the new teacher could operate on his own. This method of teaching is kept as part of TJR. Within the teaching notes is a description of the system's origins. Traditional Chinese Medicine [TCM], is based on three books (of internal medicine) attributed to the Yellow Emperor Huang Di written in China around 200 BCE: Su Wen, Ling Shu and Nan Ching. It is most often practised in a form that uses eight principles for the assessment and treatment of disease. An alternative method of assessment uses the Five Elements . It is this form that was used by Usui as an explanation for the hand placements. Usui is known to have studied the sect of Buddhism known as Tendai. This came from China where it is known as Tien Tai

Spirit KI: Energy Usui System of Natural Healing Reiki is a natural healing art founded by Dr. Mikao Usui (pictured below.) It uses the body's innate energy, known as Ki , in Japanese the Japanese culture, to cure ailments and restore the body to its natural state of healthy existence. Dr. Mikao Usui Dr. Usui was born August 15, 1865 in the Yamagata district of Gifu prefecture, Japan. It is thought that he began his Spiritual training at the age of four, having enrolled in a Tendai Buddhist school on Mt. Kurama . After years of meditation, and the study of ancient Tibetan and Sanskrit scrolls, he brought forth the healing power of Reiki to the world. The secrets of this mysterious art had traveled across the Tibetan mountains from India, to their final resting place near Mt. Kurama , Japan. That is, until Dr. Usui unearthed them from their slumber. The Mountains of Tibet : believed by many to be the origin of Modern-day Reiki. Reiki is a TeAte or laying on of hands healing technique. A

Nichiren Buddhism
Doctrines The Nichiren, Pure Land and Zen schools initially emphasised different facets of Tendai teachings, but they soon outgrew their 'parent', Tendai.
Nichiren (1222-1282), a learned monk and resolute devotee of the Lotus Sutra (Japanese; Myoho-Renge-Kyo or Hoke-Kyo), preached uncompromisingly against other 'evil' forms of Buddhism, including Zen, Shingon and Pure Land. His aim was to restore pure Tendai teaching, which focused on the Lotus Sutra. According to Chinese thought, the Buddha had gradually revealed more and more of the true Dharma during his life. In Nichiren's view, the Lotus Sutra was the only, not just the final, revelation of the truth.
For Nichiren, reciting the mystic phrase 'Namu Myoho Renge Kyo' ('Hail to the Lotus Sutra') was the quintessence of Buddhist practice. If adopted throughout the country it could transform Japan and then the world into a Buddha-land. Nichiren's teachings, though based on a sophisticated knowledge of the Buddhist scriptural tradition, are set out in the form of intriguing vernacular dialogues between a devotee of the Lotus Sutra and an unbeliever, and in letters sent by Nichiren to various disciples during his lifetime. Central to his teaching is the Tendai notion of 'three thousand worlds in one instant of thought'. This conveys the idea that at any moment we can experience hell or, by invoking the power of the Lotus Sutra, the highest enlightenment. Central to Nichiren's doctrine was a mission to convert the shogun, emperor and all the people of Japan to devotion to the Lotus Sutra.
