The Tao te Ching is one of the most widely read sacred texts, due to its simplicity and depth. It appeal is universal, and has been found relevant by Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, and even Quantum Physicists. Attributed to Lao-tzu, (580-500 B.C.), it may predate him by several centuries. The earliest known manuscripts of the Tao te Ching date to the third century B.C. There is a thing, formless yet complete. Before heaven and earth it existed. We do not know its name, but we call it Tao. It is the Mystery of Mysteries.
Planetary nebula NGC 6543, shells and jets of gas ejected from the death throes of a star one thousand years ago. Photo: J.P. Harrington and K.J. Borkowski, Hubble Space Telescope, NASA. The Tao te Ching is the oldest scripture of Taoism. It was composed during the warring states period when China descended into a chaos of rival kingdoms, some time between the sixth and the fourth or third centuries BC. It was supposedly written by Lao Tan, a possibly mythical figure, said to have lived till he was 160 or 200 years old. The classical Chinese historian Ssuma Chien says the work was by Li Erh, a custodian of imperial archives from the state of Ch'u in southern China, in the present province of Honan. This was a fertile, well-watered state. "Its people make little exertion, delight in life, and neglect to store anything." Li Erh was no seeker after fame. "The chief aim of his studies was how to keep himself concealed and remain unknown." says Ssuma Chien. Li Erh wrote his ideas only because, as he was heading into retirement, the royal gatekeeper pleaded with him to record his ideas before he disappeared into oblivion. He may have written the book under the pseudonym Lao Tan to avoid attention.

Multi-site portal
What's behind the sense of 'I am'? Who's living, and who's facing death? Who or what am I, essentially? Will some part of me continue on after death? Is there an unchanging, eternal part of me? Am I a part of some unchanging, eternal essence? Throughout history occasional individuals have told of finding the answer to those questions, and their testimonies often have a surprising consistency. And as my friend and teacher Richard Rose wrote: "Beyond the mind is a golden find...." For individuals seeking to find the answer for themselves, those testimonies provide helpful clues for pursuing the search to a successful conclusion. For some searchers, working by themselves is the preferred method. Others intuit that finding a few fellow seekers to work with may expedite their progress. Still more fortunate may be those who find a living person who has made the journey and can provide assistance from the perspective of that realization. The Self-Discovery site is designed to offer all three modes of help. Site Diagram Philosophical Self-Inquiry home page and calendar . The Philosophical Self-Inquiry Group of Pittsburgh, PA is a group aimed at implementing maximum systems of self-discovery an approach which can be duplicated anywhere by finding a few people to work with.

    The Taoist Priest
For most of my life, I have known about the Tao Te Ching , Lao-Tzu's treastise on proper living in accordance with the Tao. A collection of poems which instruct on the best way to lead, and the best way to live. Only a life of deep contemplation and meditation could unlock the secrets of the Tao. I was taught that this was Taoism.
Look, and it can't be seen.
Listen, and it can't be heard.
Reach, and it can't be grasped.
But then I wondered, if that was Taoism, what the hell was going on in these amazing Hong Kong movies where a Taoist priest fights against hopping vampires, evil sorcerers, and ghosts? Did I miss something? The foundation of both Religious Taoism and Philosophical Taoism is the Yin-Yang five-element (fire, water, air, wood, and metal) school of ancient Chinese philosophy. The classical texts of Chang-Tzu and Lao-Tzu explain the principles of this philosophy, while the priests of Religious Taoism act as interpreters of these principles as they relate to marriage, death, festival cycles, and so on. It is believed that through meditation on the Tao, a disciple will gain heaven's blessing, learn how to control spirits which cause sickness and suffering, and eventually become immortal. The Taoist priest seeks to share these benefits to his community through public ritual and liturgy.

Online book attempting a synthesis of contemporary ecological theory with concepts derived from taoism.
    http://www.ecotao.com/holism/
Welcome... Nature's Holism has evolved and continues to do so. The book, Nature's Holism (or ecotaoism ) provides an ecological model as an alternative to the "competitive" theory of evolution Nature's Holism - ecology and evolution:
We will examine how species associated within the same habitat evolve ( coevolution ). I will show you a holistic view of nature and ecosystems. You will see how the interdependence between long-associated (coadapted) species within an ecosystem affects the ecological structure of natural systems. Natural selection acts upon a creature within a specific niche in nature. The animal's biology is defined by this environment - its form, physiology and behaviour are shaped by the complexity of the natural world.
Some excerpts and quotes from chapters of this web page: On Evolutionary Biology:
A document, "Evolution, Science, and Society: a " white paper " on behalf of the field of evolutionary biology" states that "Evolutionary biology is the discipline that (1) describes the history of life and (2) investigates the processes that account for this history. It seeks to explain the diversity of life: the variety of organisms and their characteristics, and their changes over time." As such, biodiversity studies can be said to be part of the discipline of evolutionary biology. As a subdiscipline of evolutionary biology, this study falls within evolutionary ecology. This white paper identifies a priority research area to be "development and testing of predictive theories of the coevolution of interacting species." The focus of this electronic text is on a coevolutionary mechanism.

    http://www.ourladyswarriors.org/dissent/deftao.htm
    Definition of Taoism
(TAO-KIAO.) Taoism is the second of the three state religions ( San-kiao ) of China. This religion is derived from the philosophical doctrines of Lao-tze. "Lao-tze's Taoism", says Legge (Religions of China, 229), "is the exhibition of a way or method of living which men should cultivate as the highest and purest development of their nature". According to De Groot (Religious System of China, IV, p. 66): "Taoism, as the word indicates, is the Religion of the Tao, a term meaning Path or Way, but denoting in this peculiar case the way, course or movement of the Universe, her processes and methods. In other words, Taoism is the Religion of Heaven and Earth, of the Cosmos, of the World or Nature in the broadest sense of these words. Hence we may call it Naturism". B.C. ; if the latter was then fifty-one years old according to Chwang-tze, Lao-tze was then one hundred and four years old. This story is too matter of fact and lacks the marvelous legend which should surround the person of the chief of a new religion. Legend was provided for. Ko Hung, already mentioned, had placed the legend of Lao-tze at the beginning of the "Shon-sion-ch'-wan" (Records of Spirits and Immortals), and he says: "His mother carried him after the emotion she felt in seeing a large shooting star. He received from Heaven the vital breath; as he was born in a house whose proprietor was called Li (Pear tree), so he was named Li". Some authors say that Lao-tze was born before heaven and earth. According to others, he possessed a pure soul emanated from heaven, He belonged to the Class of spirits and gods.
