Taoism is not a religion, nor a philosophy -
it is a way of life, a river flowing on and on... Traditionally, Taoism has been attributed to three sources, the oldest being the legendary ' Yellow Emperor ', but the most famous is Lao Tse's Tao Teh Ching . According to tradition, Lao Tse was an older contemporary of Kung Fu Tse (Confucius). The third source is Chuang Tse 's (untitled) work.
But the original source of Taoism is said to be the ancient I Ching , The Book Of Changes.

23. Lao Tzu: Father Of Taoism
A brief look at Lao TzuCategory Society Religion and Spirituality taoism Sages Lao Tzu......Lao Tzu Father of taoism. Thus taoism, in a peculiar and roundabout way, became a political philosophy. The formulation follows these lines
http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Philosophy/Taichi/lao.html
Lao Tzu: Father of Taoism
Lao Tzu meets Yin Xi, the Guardian of the Gate of Tibet. Although ascetics and hermits such as Shen Tao (who advocated that one 'abandon knowledge and discard self') first wrote of the 'Tao' it is with the sixth century B.C. philosopher Lao Tzu (or 'Old Sage' born Li Erh) that the philosophy of Taoism really began. Some scholars believe was a slightly older contemporary of Confucius Kung-Fu Tzu , born Chiu Chung-Ni ). Other scholars feel that the Tao Te Ching, is really a compilation of paradoxical poems written by several Taoists using the pen-name, Lao Tzu. There is also a close association between Lao Tzu and the legendary Yellow Emperor, Huang-ti According to legend Lao Tzu was keeper of the archives at the imperial court. When he was eighty years old he set out for the western border of China, toward what is now Tibet, saddened and disillusioned that men were unwilling to follow the path to natural goodness. At the border (Hank Pass), a guard, Yin Xi (Yin Hsi), asked Lao Tsu to record his teachings before he left. He then composed in 5,000 characters the Tao Te Ching (The Way and Its Power). Confucius.

TAOISM
Taoism is not a religion, nor a philosophy. It is a "Way" of life. It is a River. The Tao is the natural order of things. It is a force that flows through every living and sentient object, as well as through the entire universe. When the Tao is in balance it is possible to find perfect happiness. The primary religious figures in Taoism are Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu, two scholars who dedicated their lives two balancing their inner spirits. The most common graphic representation of Taoist theology is the circular Yin Yang figure. It represents the balance of opposites in the universe. When they are equally present, all is calm. When one is outweighed by the other, there is confusion and disarray. The Yin and Yang are a model that the faithful follow, an aid that allows each person to contemplate the state of their lives. More a mode of living than an actual theology, Taoism asks that each person focuses on the world around them in order to understand the inner harmonies of the universe. It is a kind of religious system heavily focused on meditation and contemplation. The Tao surrounds everyone and one must listen to find enlightenment. Taoism is a religio-philosophical tradition that has, along with Confucianism, has shaped Chinese life for more than 2,000 years. The Taoist heritage, with its emphasis on individual freedom and spontaneity, laissez-faire government and social primitivism, mystical experience, and techniques of self-transformation, represents in many ways the antithesis to Confucian concern with individual moral duties, community standards, and governmental responsibilities.

    TAOISM is Many Things.
  • TAOISM (DAOISM) is the philosophy of Lao Tzu (Laozi) that advocates the simplicity of existence, that teaches non-interference with natural events and the leaving of nothing undone. It is also the philosophy of Chuang Tzu (Zhuangzi) which emphasizes the relative nature of what we "know". TAOISM is the application of TAOIST philosophy to a model for living. TAOISM is a system of Chinese Religion founded on the teaching of Lao Tzu and many other Chinese TAOIST teachers.

    What is a TAOIST?
Tao (or Dao) literally means "The Way." It is a term used to refer to a dynamic and interactive way of being whereby one acts and lives in harmony with nature and change. A person following the Tao does not try to obstruct natural processes taking place. This kind of action, and stillness - being - requires great clarity of vision and strength of mind.

Ramana Maharshi and others at ease At the age of sixteen Ramana Maharshi left his home, his family, and all he knew. He felt drawn to Aranachula - a small mountain in Southern India. Here he lived for the rest of his life. His only possessions were a piece of cloth to cover himself, and a walking stick. Little by little word of a sage living alone on Aranachula mountain became known. Many felt drawn to sit in his presence. He seldom spoke. But occasionally he would respond to questions. These web pages contain some of what was said and discussed at these times, as well as the teachings of others. Continue

Home Agriculture Art Business ... Travel Chinese Philosophies and Religions Taoism Taoism and A Few Words about Tao Taoism is a philosophy, a religion and also the basis for Traditional Chinese Medication. It represents the wisdom accumulated over 5,000 years of Chinese history. Together with Confucianism and Buddhism, it has been continuously guiding Chinese in behaviors and governing. There are some very basic different approaches taken by the West and Chinese philosophies. The West treats individual as an independent and separate entity. Chinese treats individual as an element in the whole universe and is interrelated. West tends to be self-centered and thus any blame will be first on others. On the opposite, Chinese is taught to merge self into the environment as a whole or there is no self at all. Tao and Taoism are different from "God" and "Bible". To understand Taoism, one has to "unlearn" or break out from own paradigm to view it from a completely new angle. "Tao" means "behavior, understanding and the constant changing from and to". Taoism is a philosophy and a belief of simplicity and the very nature of universe. There is no absolute "stillness". Everything, including the universe, is changing all the time. The relative "stability" can be achieved when a harmony is reached between "Yin" and "Yang", which are said to be the opposite but related natural forces in the universe. There are five elements in everything. The following diagram described their interrelationship.

    http://home.swipnet.se/~w-42275/tao.html
To whom it might concern..
"My Rose..?" ritad av mig själv (Pelle Stridh) Jag kommer på denna sida bl.a att publicera tänkvärda ord skrivna av en av Taoismens grundare, Lao Tzu. Han nedtecknade ett antal "teser", närmare bestämt 81 stycken i skriften "Tao Te Ching". Jag lägger ut en ny varje vecka så att ni, kära läsare, kan läsa, begrunda och tolka.
