May 3 - Soka Gakkai Day Celebrations
SGM members nation-wide celebrated this significant date, May 3 - the Soka Gakkai Day. SGI President Ikeda in his message mentioned, "We now embark on a new phase in our journey towards the eternal spread of Buddhism and the realization of a world, where humanism and peace prevail. Let us advance in solid unity, holding high the banner of Soka humanism." President Ikeda also urged all the members to strive as good citizens within the frameworks of the respective cultures and societies, radiating the warm humanism of the SGI. SGM Kuala Lumpur members held a commemorative gongyo meeting at the SGM Culture Centre, Cheras, on May 3. SGM General Director Koe Teng Hong in his speech mentioned that Soka Gakkai can achieve today's development due mainly to the strong bond of mentor-disciple relationship between the presidents of Soka Gakkai. Mr Koe called upon all members to have a close link of hearts with our mentor, SGI President Ikeda, and to always put into practice his guidance. This, according to Mr Koe, is practising the spirit of mentor-and-disciple and advancing along the correct path of faith. SGI President Ikeda's Congratulatory Message My precious fellow members around the world! Con-gratulations on May 3, 2001! It is our first May 3 of the new century - in the year 2001 that marks a profoundly significant milestone in human history and also in the annals of our global kosen-rufu movement. It is through your unstinting dedication and tireless efforts that we are able to celebrate this day with such brilliant joy and wonderful achievements. Words cannot express the deep appreciation I feel for all of you! To each and every one of you, dear friends in 165 countries and territories around the world: "Thank you!" and "Congratulations on the first May 3 of the 21st Century! Banzai!" In the Gosho, Nichiren Daishonin writes:

SOKA GAKKI INTERNATIONAL in the United States (SGI-USA)
ORLANDO, FLORIDA

Soka Gakkai International in the United States (SGI-USA) sprouted roots in Orlando soil in the same manner as it has in other cities across America. In the 1960's Orlando was host to many Japanese war brides who became the founding women of SGI-USA in the Central Florida area. SGI's initial group of believers has since grown to over 400 members in the territory of Orlando with separate districts, groups, and chapters comprising the total number. During this growth period, many fellow believers from other states across the nation relocated to Central Florida to assist with further development of the group and it's efforts to enhance society and culture. SGI-USA Orlando is currently in the process of establishing a community center for the Orlando area which they project will open in the near future. In the meantime, discussion meetings, study meetings and gatherings are held in members' homes and rented public facilities. The format of the gathering is open and friendly, and a discussion-type theme prevails. Visitors are genuinely welcomed and encouraged to ask any questions they may have. In fact, visitors are treated with special preference as responses to their inquiries are generously donated with full explanations from different members providing the objective views of many perspectives. After the meeting, a visitor is surrounded by friendly personal greetings from the members and is assured of a warm welcome.

Soka Gakkai By Yohei Suda LL.B., University of Tokyo in 1999
Brief History of Soka Gakkai
Soka Gakkai, a lay Buddhist movement, was founded in 1930 by Tsunesaburo Makiguchi (1871-1944), who was the first president from 1930 to 1944, and by Josei Toda (1900-1958), who was the second president from 1951 to 1958. Its original name was Soka Kyoiku Gakkai. Both were educators converted to Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism. Makiguchi was originally an elementary school teacher. He was dissatisfied with school education in Japan at that time because it was too abstract and too elitist and it did not emphasise practical skills for ordinary people. Makiguchi also considered that apart from pedagogy, religion was important for the creation of values. He found that the teaching of Nichiren (1222-1282) was the best education method because it was mass-oriented. Nichiren studied various teachings of Buddhism and finally found that the essence of Buddhism is in Lotus Sutra, which reveals to all the people that they have potential for enlightenment without regard to individual distinctions. Nichiren advocated that following Lotus Sutra (Hokkekyo) leads everyone to happiness. Makiguchi and Toda started to follow the teaching of Nichiren and established Soka Gakkai to develop an education project based on his theories.

Nichiren Buddhism
The distinguishing practice of Nichiren and Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism, two similar sects based on the teachings of the fiery Japanese reformer Nichiren (1222-82), is the chanting of the phrase Namu Myoho Renge Kyo : "I trust in the Sutra of the Lotus of the Wonderful Law" (or Lotus Sutra). A fisherman's son who became a monk of the Tendai sect at 15, Nichiren came to the conclusion that the only true Buddhism was that of the Lotus Sutra, which contained the words of the Buddha himself, as opposed to other schools based on the writings of Buddhist adepts or commentators. But Nichiren went further, attacking the traditional doctrines of Buddhism, and teaching that anyone who chanted Namu Myoho Renge Kyo would achieve paradise on earth, for which he was ostracized and persecuted. Nichiren's beliefs were strongly nationalistic; he felt that Japan could prosper only through teaching the Lotus Sutra, and that he was not only the nation's savior but also an incarnation of two bodhisattvas. Followers of Nichiren today imagine Japan as the center of a Buddha-world that will in time encompass the globe a truly universal religion. The Nichiren chant is often accompanied by drumming, something which may have helped attract a number of prominent American musicians to its practice, most notably jazz pianist Herbie Hancock and pop singer Tina Turner. Nichiren Shoshu developed in the 20th century based on the teachings of a Nichiren disciple named Nikko. A modern lay organization of the Nichiren sect, called the

Sôka Gakkai or Value Creation Society, Japanese lay Buddhist group that bases itself on Nichiren Buddhism. Sôka Gakkai was founded by Makiguchi Tsunesaburo, a schoolteacher and educational reformer. Makiguchi converted to Nichiren Buddhism. He sought to reform society with a comprehensive educational program incorporating Nichiren Buddhist values. Consistent with Nichiren Buddhist thinking, he venerated the Lotus Sutra, the Buddhist holy text. He also claimed Nichiren, the monk who established a new sect of Buddhism in Japan, as the incarnation of the Eternal Buddha. Makiguchi and his assistant, Toda Jôsei, were jailed during World War II for criticizing Shinto, the Japanese national religion and the Japanese government's war policy. Makiguchi died in prison. Freed after Japan's defeat, Toda Jôsei began a vigorous campaign of conversion called shakubuku, break and subdue that led to the movement's rapid expansion and subsequent criticism. Ikeda Daisaku became the leader of Sôka Gakkai and membership grew to millions. Outside Japan there are numerous members of Sôka Gakkai International in many countries and regions.

by Ryuei Michael McCormick
Daisaku Ikeda took over as the general director of the Soka Gakkai in 1958. In 1960 he became the third president of the Soka Gakkai. Daisaku Ikeda had joined the Soka Gakkai in 1947 as a member of the Youth Division. In 1949, Ikeda became Toda's secretary. Toda also became his private tutor from 1950 - 1951. In 1954, Ikeda became the chief-of-staff of the Youth Division and thus was a key figure in the shakubuku campaigns of the 1950's. As early as 1951, Toda seemed to be grooming his protege to be the third president of the Soka Gakkai and made remarks to the effect that his successor would come from the Young Men's Division. In Ikeda's inauguration address as the third president of the Soka Gakkai he made it clear that he intended to strengthen the bonds between the Soka Gakkai and the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood (referring to the High Priest as "His Excellency" and to continue the relentless campaign against "evil religions." In accordance with the spirit of our first president

Buddhism...
"Buddhism is concerned with the essential nature of humanity. Buddhism is not found somewhere separate from such beautiful expressions of humanity as showing appreciation to our mothers and courtesy to others. As Nichiren Daishonin teaches in the Gosho, 'behavior as a human being' that perfectly accords with reason is what constitutes the heart of Buddhism. Therefore, our world of faith must be a gathering that is full of affection and heartfelt consideration."

Scope and Purpose of Course This course looks at a number of developments in contemporary Buddhism: how Buddhist thought and practice (and in particular, Buddhist ethics) have been inflected by the encounter with modernity by Buddhist communities; the effects of globalization on the political economy of Buddhist life in the twentieth century; and the emergence of new forms of Buddhist movements, particularly expansive movements from East Asia (such as Fo Kuang Shan, Tzu Chi, and Soka Gakkai) and "hybrids" in North American. The main focus of the course is to consider contemporary Buddhism within a global perspective, to see Buddhist life as participating in and contributing to the modern world, rather than portraying it as "different" and opposed to "the rest."
