SIKHISM
Sikhim was founded over 500 years ago. Sikhism preaches a message of devotion and remembrance of God at all times, truthful living, equality of mankind and denounces superstitions and blind rituals. Sikhism is open to all through the teachings of its 10 Gurus enshrined in the Sikh Holy Book and Living Guru, Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Sikhism is an Indian religion combining Islamic and Hindu elements, founded in the Punjab (Pa–jab) in the late 15th century AD by Nanak. Sikhs consider themselves disciples of Nanak and his nine successors, who are called the Ten Gurus. The writings of the early Gurus were compiled in the Adi Granth, the Sikh sacred book, by Arjun (1563-1606), the fifth Guru. After Arjun's execution by the Mughal emperor, the Sikhs began to change from a pacifist to a militant sect, a process that culminated under the 10th Guru, Gobind Rai (1666-1708). It was he who founded the fraternity known as the Khalsa ("Pure"), which has remained the principal Sikh order. Its members adopted the additional name Singh ("Lion") or Kaur ("Lioness") and observed a strict discipline. Gobind Singh (as Gobind Rai was renamed) lost all his four sons in his lifetime and declared the succession of Gurus at an end.

Sikhs are a religious community of some 16 million worldwide, centered on N India, mainly in the Punjab. Its founder, the mystic guru teacher Nanak (c.1469-c.1539), taught monotheism and opposed idolatry and the Caste system. He believed in the fundamental identity of all religions and stressed religious exercises and Meditation. Gradually becoming united and developing military power under a series of gurus, the Sikhs were militarized to oppose Islam by Govind Singh (1666-1708), the tenth and last guru, who created a warrior fraternity and introduced the Sikh practices of wearing a turban and never cutting the hair. In the late 19th cent. conflict with the British led to the subjugation of the Sikh state in the Punjab (established earlier by Ranjit Singh). Following the partition (1947) of British India, the Sikhs fought the Muslims of the Punjab in a fierce holy war, after which some 2.5 million Sikhs moved from W Punjab (now part of Pakistan) to E Punjab, in India. In the early 1980s Indian Sikhs demanding an independent state resorted to terrorism, leading to turmoil in Punjab. In 1984 the Indian army stormed the Sikhs' Golden Temple, at Amritsar, which had been occupied by Sikh militants. Prime Min. Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in retaliation, after which mobs attacked Sikhs throughout India. Unrest in Punjab continued into the early 1990s.

bhakti movement, which promoted both the idea that God comprises one reality alone as well as the practice of devotional singing and prayer. The Muslim mystical tradition of Sufism, with its emphasis on meditation, also had some prominence there. Drawing on these resources, Nanak forged a new spiritual path. moksha, release from this cycle into unity with God, could be achieved only with the help of a guru, or spiritual teacher. Nanak believed that communion with God could be gained through devotional repetition of the divine name, singing of hymns and praises, and adherence to a demanding ethical code. He rejected idols and the Hindu caste system; it became a custom for Sikhs of all social ranks to take meals together. These beliefs are still central to modern Sikhism. Adi Granth (First Book), or

Sikhism Ik Onkaar - There Is Only One God Sikhism is one of the younger faiths of the world, as compared with religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity or Islam. It is a monotheistic faith, preaching the existence of only one God, and teaching ideals that may be universally accepted today and in the future: honesty, compassion, humility, piety, social commitment, and most of all tolerance for other religions. The word 'Sikh', derived from the Sanskrit word 'shishya', means a disciple, a learner, a seeker of truth. A Sikh believes in One God and the teachings of the Ten Gurus, embodied in the Sikh Holy Scripture, Guru Granth Sahib. Additionally, he or she must take Amrit, the Sikh Baptism. Sikhism was founded by Guru Nanak Dev Ji at the beginning of the sixteenth century. The succeeding nine Gurus nurtured and developed his ideas and teachings. Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Guru, brought to an end to the line of human Gurus and in 1708, installed Guru Granth Sahib, as the permanent Guru of the Sikhs. The Sikh Gurus provided guidance for about 240 years. They taught the basic values of freedom, brotherhood, charity, obedience, understanding, sympathy, patience, humility, simplicity, and piety, and outlined the path to spirituality in life. The Gurus themselves said that they were human and were not to be worshipped as God. They considered themselves to be mere servants of God. Guru Gobind Singh said:

Sikhism began with the teaching of Guru Nanak in the Fifteenth Century. Nanak was born in North West India at a time when India was ruled by the muslim Moghuls. There was a great deal of conflict between the Muslim rulers and the Hindus. Nanak's message of racial harmony and charitable works led him to travel as far west as Mecca, and his followers included members of both communities. Introduction
Sikhism was founded in the fifteenth century by Sri Guru Nanak Dev, the first of Gurus born in Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib) in Seikhpura in the district of Lahore (in Pakistan). He made no attempt to build up a new religion. He tried to have a unifying religion to embrace both Hindus and Mohammedans. He insisted on the worship of one God, the Creator and the Supreme Ruler. Who is all and apart from Whom any thought of individual existence is only Maya Guru Nanak tried his level best to join the Hindus and the Musalmans in one league of love to God and service to man. The cardinal doctrines of Sikhism are the unity or oneness of God and the brotherhood of man. Love to God and the teacher is the very basis and the very root of Sikhism. In its philosophy it is Hindu. It is reformatory in its nature. Sikhism is a movement essentially of Bhakti. Guru Nanak taught that one can obtain his emancipation through the name of Hari. Guru Gobind gave to the Sikhs their great military organisation. He was a great military organiser. The word ‘Sikh’ simply means a disciple. It is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Shishya’ or disciple. Sikhism enjoins that obedience to the Guru brings release from future birth, and the attainment of eternal bliss and immortality.
