Avhandling

SHINTOISM
CONTENTS PAGE
WORLD RELIGIONS PAGE
Shinto, the indigenous religion of Japan, has been influenced by Buddhism, Confucianism, and more recently, Christianity. It is a combination of many things, and within it are wide differences of thought and practice. Because of this, an isolated portrait of Shintoism is somewhat misleading. Shintoism is an undeveloped primitive religion which centers on the worship of nature deities and deified people. It has no founder, no prophet, no savior, and little formal doctrine. Its main emphasis is the worship of the Kami, a concept which involves the gods, all aspects of nature, supernatural power, and certain people. Kami is everywhere and the world is Kami. It is the divine consciousness which flows through all. It is the vital force of the universe. This concept is pantheistic because there is no real distinction between the creator and the created. The origins of the ancient Shinto religion are obscure. Two Chinese words, shen (spirit) and tao (way), were combined to produce the word Shinto. The equivalent in Japanese is kaml no michi, which essentially means "the way of the gods." Only after Buddhism began to threaten Shintoism did the Japanese try to preserve their religion by recording the old myths and oral traditions. Buddhism entered Japan in A.D. 522 by way of China and Korea. About two centuries later the two books of Shinto scriptures were produced as a response. The Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters) appeared in A.D. 712, and the Nihongi (Chronicles of Japan) appeared in A.D. 720.

The introduction of Buddhism had been strongly opposed by consrevative Shintoists. Yet because Prince Shotoku devotedly supported this foreign religion, it took the same status as Shinto. Buddha and Kami, the Japanese indigenous gods, were enshrined in different places at first. But people began to consider Kami to be protectors of Buddhism, and eventually Kami was also placed in temples to guard Buddhim. Contents Nara Map

- With general viewpoints concerning natural religions - Our additional pages concerning the other Religions are a contribution to better understanding and to the interreligious dialogue. For the part of Christianity the basis is independent research, including the old spiritual depth and modern investigations of consciousness. The old japanese Shinto-Religion (Kami no michi) is not described comprehensively, but some viewpoints are given, which are important for this purpose. Shinto is originally one of the Natural Religions, which are related to one another all around the world, and which are older than the well known World Religions like Buddhism and Christianity. Natural Religions
The origin of the Natural Religions is a time, when human beings mainly had a consciousness different from the intellect dominating today. Jean Gebser, author of the book "Ursprung und Gegenwart" (german) would name this level of awareness the "mythical consciousness". The investigator into consciousness

Major Scriptures : Kokiji (Record of Ancient Things), Nikong, (Chronicles of Japan), a later work, Yengishiki (Institutes of the priod of Yengi), and the Collections of 10,000 Leaves are the primary works, but are not regarded as revealed scripture. Adherents : Estimated at 30 million (30,000,000) mostly in Japan, most of which are also Buddhists. Sects: 13 as stated before. The names are unknown to me currently. Synopsis: There are two main divisions of Shintoism, one being divided into the 13 sects which are all very similar. The other is known as State Shinto, which finds its highest expression in that of worship of the Emporer and holds loyalty to State and family. Shinto (taken from Shin and Tao, both Chinese characters, which mean "Way of the Spirit") is called Kmi-no-michi in it's home country, Japan. In its shrines or temples, no images or idols are worshipped because it is believed that the Kami are actually there. Offerings of food, water, incence, etc., are given daily upon the altar. There is the belief that the whole universe is sacred, that man can tune himself to the sacredness. Stress is placed

ENCHANTING JAPAN
Japan has many Buddhist temples and shinto shrines throughout the country just like cathedrals and churches in America and European countries. Large scaled Temple and Shrine complexes are most seen in such major historical spots as Nala, Kyohto, Kamakula, Nikkoh and so on. Japanese religion has originally been of an animistic polytheism to worship souls which were believed to be with each of all the natural existences and the ancestors placing the Sun as the core (Shintoism). Hence, Yaoyolozuno-Kami (All gods). Buddhism, opened by Siddhartha, a prince of a small province in the northern India in 6-5th century B.C., was introduced also into Japan around mid 6th century A.D.. Then, Yamato governing powers began to form a buddhist country. Different from other major religions, Buddhism is rather a kind of philosophy of humanity. Thus it has no god, but a doctrine to control one's own way of life by oneself through study and training. A typical Buddhist temple consists of one Kondoh (Main building) and at least one pagoda (usually three or five storied). A kondoh is the main building where Buddhist image(s) are enshrined, monks and nuns reside, study and train. A kondoh (golden hall) is called so because the interior walls and ceilings are usually plated with gold leaf. A pagoda originates in the Buddha's ashes worship and a memorial pagoda built on the mound in which the Buddha's ashes were buried. The ground floor forms a room which has an alter therein with a Buddhist image enshrined together with the Buddhist scriptures. But no rooms are on the other floors.

Shintoism They closely relate Shinto with Buddhism both culturally and socially to the life of the Japanese people. Its relationships to other religions in Japan are generally cooperative and harmonious. Most Shintoists believe that cooperation between different religions could contribute to world peace. Shintoists insist on maintaining their own characteristics and inner depth while working toward the peaceful coexistence of human beings. Shinto consists of the traditional Japanese religious practices and the beliefs and life attitudes that are in accord with these practices. Shinto is more readily observed in the social life of the Japanese people and in their personal motivations, than in a pattern of formal belief or philosophy. It remains closely connected with the Japanese value system and the Japanese people's ways of thinking and acting. Shinto is described as a religion of tsunagari ("continuity or communion"). The Japanese, while recognizing each man as an individual personality, do not take him as a solitary being separated from others. On the contrary, he is regarded as the bearer of a long, continuous history that comes down from his ancestors and continues in his descendants. He is also considered as a responsible constituent of various social groups. .
