Reconstructionist Judaism
a little background information History
In the 1920's, Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan founded a movement, which embraced Conservative ideals, while introducing equaility and democracy. This differs from Conservative Judaism in that there is little interperetation of the laws proclaimed at Mount Sinai. Reconstructionist Judaism is one in which the congregation of the temple decides in what way they would see fit to observe the law.
It's focus is on the Jewish community, not the Jewish individual, such as Reform Judaism had evolved to over the past century. It is the coming together of the Jewish congregation, to worship, to interact, and to grow. As society grows around them, so too does the ideology of the temple, fitting into the spirtiual and emotional needs of the congregation.
It is the Jewish people who choose to live in a context of covenant, through which our tradition becomes holy to us. Reconstructionists believe in the Jews' historic mission, to witness the divine presence throughout the world, and especially to testify that every human life is sacred, created in the divine image.
Reconstructionism speaks to changes in life: renewed Jewish statehood, the global village, the environmental crisis, new and different family structures, the evolving relationships of men and women.

Reconstructionist Judaism
The children of Jews who came to America in the immigration wave of 1880-1920 wondered how to reconcile their European heritage with the wide-open atmosphere in America. It was the insight of Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, the founder of Reconstructionism, that Judaism could do well by incorporating the American ideals of equality, democracy and inclusivity. Theological perspectives that flourished in traditional hierarchical societies needed to be reconstructed to speak in a society where authority derived from the people and where one's religious or ethnic identity was not in principle a barrier to full economic and political participation. Reconstructionism is a Jewish embrace of and response to American democratic society. It is a Jewish approach that takes America seriously, both by bringing Jewish perspectives to bear on social issues, and by incorporating the best of American values into Judaism. Reconstructionism is a "bottom-up" approach to Judaism. It begins with the experiences of the Jewish people. It speaks less of revelation and more of discovery. It emphasizes connection, opportunity and responsibility over commandment. Reconstructionists envision a maximalist liberal Judaism that serves as a rich source of spiritual self-expression and moral challenge in the ways Jews conduct their lives. Reconstructionism defines Judaism as the evolving religious civilization of the Jewish people Evolving means that Judaism has changed over the millennia of its existence. Reconstructionists seek to nurture this evolution. We see it as the lifeblood of Judaism, allowing it to continue as a dynamic tradition that speaks to the changes in Jewish life: renewed Jewish statehood, the global village, the environmental crisis, new and different family structures, the evolving relationships of men and women.

Judaism FAQs
judaismfaqs@groups.msn.com Groups Home My Groups Language Help ... Tools Reconstructionist Judaism Introduction Theology Reconstructionist theology in some ways is a variant of the naturalism of John Dewey. Dewey's naturalism combined atheist beliefs with religious terminology in order to construct a religiously satisfying philosophy for those who had lost faith in traditional religion. Reconstructionism denies that God is either personal or supernatural. Rather, God is said to be the sum of all natural processes that allow man to become self-fulfilled. Kaplan wrote that "to believe in God means to take for granted that it is man's destiny to rise above the brute and to eliminate all forms of violence and exploitation from human society." Most Reconstructionist Jews reject traditional forms of theism, and instead define themselves as naturalists or humanists. These views have been criticized on the grounds that they are actually atheism, which has only been made palatable to Jews by rewriting the dictionary. Thus, a growing minority of Reconstructionists refused to accept Kaplan's theology, and instead affirm a theistic view of God. Examples include Rabbis Jacob Agus (1911-1986), Milton Steinberg (1903-1950), Arthur Green, and Edward Feld. These latter views of God are also well accepted in Conservative and Reform Judaism. God: Jewish Views Revelation and Torah Statement of beliefs and principles As in Reform Judaism, Reconstructionist Judaism holds that personal autonomy has precedence over Jewish law and theology. It does not ask that its adherents hold to any particular beliefs, nor does it ask that halakha be accepted as normative. In practice, Rabbi Kaplan's books, especially "The Meaning of God in Modern Jewish Religion" and "Judaism as a Civilization" are defacto statements of principles.

Shir Hadash means a "new song." We are a growing Jewish congregation that began with just six families in the summer of 1995 . In three months, we grew to over 40 households. Now in our sixth year, we number over 170 households drawn from more than 20 different towns in the northern and northwestern suburbs of Chicago. Our growth is the result of the feeling from our members that Shir Hadash provides something that has been missing in our livesa meaningful, contemporary Judaism. Our membership is built from people with varied backgrounds: some come from a traditional Jewish experience with knowledge of Hebrew and ritual; others are interfaith marriage partners who may be experiencing Judaism for the first time; still others are Jews who have not been involved in Jewish life for many years. Together, we have become a community searching for a satisfying Jewish life rich with tradition and meaning. And along the way we make friends.

Reconstructionist Reading List Introduction
This message is intended to provide readers of soc.culture.jewish with a list of references to allow them to learn more about the current practices, past practices, beliefs, and history of the Reconstructionist Judaism Movement. Reconstructionist Judaism is the small "fourth movement" of American Judaism. It was founded by the Conservative Rabbi and philosopher Mordecai Kaplan. It emphasizes "Judaism as a civilization" (i.e., the integration of selected Jewish beliefs with the Jewish people's culture and folkways). Reconstructionist Jews are willing to question conventional answers and keep open minds. They believe that a Jew need not and ought not sacrifice intellectual integrity for the sake of his/her Jewish identity. Reconstructionists are Jews who take the Jewish traditions seriously and live Jewish lives even through they don't believe in the divine supernatural origin of the Torah. Reconstructionists believe that, just a Jewish civilization has adapted to new circumstances throughout Jewish history, so must it adapt to late twentieth-century North American society. Reconstructionists tend to conduct more intimate worship services in which everyone is involved and the rabbiif there is onedoes not dominate. The membership body of the Reconstructionist Movement is the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation http://www.jrf.org/

Reconstructionism is unique among the Jewish denominations as the product of the fertile mind of one person, Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan. Kaplan, who grew up and studied in an Orthodox environment, taught for decades at the Conservative Jewish Theological Seminary, developed his theories of reconstructing Jewish civilization for modern needs.
