Rastafarianism
A handful of "crazy men" appeared in the 1930's making absurd claims about the Emperor of Abyssinia being the Messiah: Ras Tafari, afterwards crowned as Haile Selassie, which translated means "the Power of Trinity." There were not many that expected the profound effect the movement would have on Jamaican society. The Rastafarians were long-haired and bearded long before the advent of hippy fashions. These men were ready to suffer for their beliefs. Rastafarianism is assisted by sacramental ganja smoking, drumming, Bible reading and chanting. They have also acquired a capacity to culture ideas through music, costume, physical exercises, art, poetry and indiqenous "cottage" industries like broom-making. Reggae music developed in the rasta "yards" and produced superstars like the late Bob Marley. Politicians are very conscious of Rasta influence among Jamaica's youthful majority. They even awarded Bob Marley the Jamaican Order of Merit while he was dying of cancer. The "Dread," the true Rasta, is a peaceful, careful, preferably self-employed achiever who stays within the law - save for his sacramental smoke.

Rastafarianism
The Rastafarian religion originated in Africa.  It is often associated with the poorer black population of Jamaica.  It is not just a religion, but a way of life.  Rastafarians speak out against; poverty, oppression and inequality.....not just religious ideas but global problems.  Rastafarians will use the Bible for guidence.
The prime basic belief of the Rastafarians is that Haile Selassie is the living God for the black race.
Selassie, whose previous name was Ras Tafari, was the black Emperor of Ethiopia.  Rastafarians say scriptures prophesised him as the one with "the hair of whose head was like wool (the matted hair of I black man), whose feet were like unto burning brass (I black skin)".
Selassie was not a Rastafarian himself.  He was a devout Christian.  In fact, no one is really sure what he thought of the whole Rastafarian movement.  When a group of Rastas went to Ethiopia to honour him, an official of the palace told them to go away!  This did not make the Rastas question their belief, it only made it stronger. God is not supposed to know he is God.
When Haile Selassie was reported dead, Rastas would not believe it.  They believed that it was a trick of the media to try and bring their faith down.  Rastafarians believe that Haile Selassie I has trodded on to the perfect flesh, and sits on the highest point of Mount Zion where He and Empress Menen await the time of judgement.

What is rastafarianism?
Its Origins The Rastafarian movement was originated in Jamaica in 1930 based on the philosophies of Marcus Mosiah Garvey (1887-1940). His organization's aim was to unite black people (Negroes) with their rightful homeland, Africa. He prophesied about his people being redeemed by a future black African king. This prediction was fulfilled in November 2, 1930, when Ras Tafari Makonnen was crowned King of Ethiopia. He later claimed the titles "Emperor Haile Selassie" and " the conquering Lion of the tribe of Judah". He was considered as the God of Africa whom Garvey had spoken about and as a result the Rastafarian faith was born. bodyOffer(2599) Leonard P. Howell was the first to establish a branch of the Rastafarian movement and in 1933 was arrested by the Jamaican Government for preaching a " revolutionary doctrine". Other contributors to the Rastafarian theology were Robert Hinds, H. Archibald Dunkley and Nathaniel Hibbert. The visit of Haile Selassie to Jamaica on April 21, 1966 was a momentous occasion for the Rastafarian movement. He encouraged the followers to liberate their Jamaican brothers before they sought to immigrate to Ethiopia. Haile Selassie's death on August 27, 1975 came with many responses from the Rastafarian community. Some said that his death was a fabrication. Others said his death was of little consequence because he was a personification of God. However, today followers of the Rastafarian movement still hold to the claim the he is God.

Rastafarianism
How did Rastafarianism begin? Rastafarianism is a very new religion. It began in the 1930’s. A Jamaican named Marcus Garvey predicted that a black messiah would come out of Africa. Haile Selassie, or Prince Ras Tafari became Emperor of Ethiopia in 1930. Jamaicans believed he was the black messiah that Marcus Garvey predicted. It was important that he was black, because Jamaicans at that time faced a lot of hardship because of their skin color. Here was a God that they could relate to. What do Rastafarians believe? Rastas believe that they are one of the twelve tribes of ancient Israel. They believe that Ethiopia is their promised land, and hope one day to return there, just as the Israelites returned to the promised land after having been enslaved in Egypt and Babylon. Rastafarians use the Bible as their text. Who do Rastas believe God is?

rastafarianism in Barbados. rastafarianism was introduced to Barbadosin 1975 as an offshoot of the Rastafarian movement in Jamaica.
http://www.barbados.org/rasta.htm
Rastafarianism in Barbados Rastafarianism was introduced to Barbados in 1975 as an offshoot of the Rastafarian movement in Jamaica. The Rastafarian movement really began with the teachings of Marcus Garvey who founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association in the 1920's. He called for self reliance "at home and abroad" and advocated a "back to Africa" consciousness, awakening black pride and denouncing the British colonial indoctrination that caused blacks to feel shame for their African heritage. "Look to Africa", said Marcus Garvey in 1920, "when a black king shall be crowned, for the day of deliverance is at hand".
Many thought the prophecy was fulfilled when in 1930, Ras Tafari, was crowned emperor Haile Selassie 1 of Ethiopia and proclaimed "King of Kings, Lord of Lords, and the conquering lion of the Tribe of Judah".
Haile Selassie claimed to be a direct descendant of King David, the 225th ruler in an unbroken line of Ethiopian Kings from the time of Solomon and Sheba. He and his followers took great pride in being black and wanted to regain the black heritage that was lost by loosing faith and straying from the holy ways.
Rastafarians live a peaceful life, needing little material possessions and devote much time to contemplating the scriptures. They reject the white man's world, as the new age Babylon of greed and dishonesty.

A look at the history and influences of the Rastafarian religion. Term Paper #: # of words: # of sources: Format (MLA/APA): MLA Written: Price: Hide: Author: Joseph Stroud
Abstract
This paper traces the origins and development of the Rastafarian religion, beginning with the spokesman, Marcus Garvey. The contributions of Emperor Haile Selassie are focused upon and the development of the religion in Jamaica is studied. The philosophy behind the religion is explored and its doctrine is laid out. The religion’s colors, symbols and rituals are explained and the external influences on the religion are looked at.
From The Paper
"However, the Rastafarian movement gained a following and formally began in 1930, after Selassie was crowned and the evident completion of the millennial expectations of Marcus Garvey. Furthermore, one of its early leaders Leonard Howell, who in 1933 was arrested by the Jamaican government for preaching a revolutionary doctrine (The Perennial Dictionary of World Religions, Keith Crim, editor, p. 601), helped formed the theology of the movement. His arrest helped shaped the movement's organizational structure."

Entire books have been written about the Rastafarian movement, but this section will only touch on some of the very basic points about the religion. One interesting book is Millard Faristzaddi's Itations of Jamaica and I Rastafari the one-volume, 1982 text is filled with pictures of Rastafarians, poetry written about and by Rastas, and sections about the religious creed. One of the most interesting sections discussed the particulars about how Rastafarians speak. Marcus Garvey planted the seeds for the movement in the 1920s, when he advocated a "back to Africa" consciousness. In part of his teachings, he said "look to Africa, when a black king shall be crowned, for the day of deliverance is at hand" (Wilder 73). In 1930, Ras Tafari was crowned Emporer Haile Selassie I in Ethiopia. Many people thought he fulfilled Garvey's prophecy and looked to him for guidance in how to begin their new way of life. The Rastafarians (as they were known) emphasized "black pride, and the need to regain the heritage the black race temporarily lost by straying from holy ways" (73). True Rastafarians live peaceful, pious lives with nothing more than material essentials. A large part of their living includes a study of scripture. They also "[reject] the white man's world the modern "Babylon" and its greed, dishonesty, lasciviousness, meat-eating habits, "devil soup" (alcohol) and chemical-oriented technology. The two most obvious external marks of the Rasta his "dreadlocks" and his proud, strutting walk are inspired by the image of the lion in Selassie's title, Lion of Judah" (73).

Rastafarianism
Rastafarianism is a 20th century phenomenom originating from the shanty towns of Kingston, Jamaica, and spreading among the African (and non-african) diaspora on the wings of the international music industry and the ganja trade routes. The Rastafarian movement began with the teachings of Marcus Garvey who founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association in the 1920's. He advocated a "back to Africa" consciousness, awakening black pride and denouncing the British colonialism that made blacks feel ashamed of their African heritage. "Look to Africa", said Marcus Garvey in in 1929 in his last address to the UNIA, in Jamaica, "where a king would be crowned, for the day of deliverance is near." When on on November 2 of the following year Ras Tafari, was crowned emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia and assumed his name meaning "the power of the Holy Trinity". it seemed like the prophecy was fulfilled. Haile Selassie claimed to be a direct descendant of King David, the 225th ruler in an unbroken line of Ethiopian Kings from King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. He took great pride in being black and wanted to regain the black heritage that was lost by loosing faith and straying from the holy ways. He was also, mind you, considered a ruthless dictator, by some of the neighbouring african countries and was opossed by the Eritreans who were fighting for their freedom. He did however allow his subjects to draw up a constitution, established a parliamentary and judicary syystem, abolished slavery, and revised the constitution. In 1974 following worsening political and economic conditions he was deposed by the unsavory Marxist military dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam, later toppled in turn in 1991

Rastafarianism
Rastafarianism arose in the ghettos of Kingston in the early 1930:s at just about the same time as Haille Sellassie was crowned emperor of Ethiopia. Some of the most significant signs of Rastafarianism are the long dreadlocks, the red, green and black colours and the caps. This is not only a style, but also a part of their religion. The dreadlocks symbolize many different things for example the Rastafarians roots. It is also meant as a contrast to the white mans blond, straight hair and because of that it says in the Bible: "They shall not make baldhead upon their hair, neither shall they shave of the corner of their beards, nore make any cutting of their flesh. The way the hair grows also represents the lion Judah who in turn symbolizes Haille Sellassie. Another thing that's related to Rastafarianism is the reggae music, which is the most popular music on Jamaica. 2 of the symbols within Rastafarianism are the royal ring of Haille Selassie and the Rastafarianism bible, the Holy Piby.
