The text has been re-set and each book has been individually hand-bound. Plymouth Brethren The Plymouth Brethren originated in Ireland in the 1820s, but from 1832-45 were based at a chapel in Ebrington Street, Plymouth under the ministry of JN Darby. His followers did not believe in formal Church membership, having taken to heart Matthew 18:20, "Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them", and the Brethren gathered in homes and rented halls, refused ordained leadership, relied upon the Holy Spirit for the necessary ministerial gifts amongst the men, and forged close-knit fellowship and purity of doctrine. During this 13-year period, over 1,200 people attended at Plymouth, and communities were established over the world.

http://pages.prodigy.net/sathi/ourhistory.html
A Brief Outline of the “Plymouth Brethren”: History, Doctrines, and Practices Dr. Sunny Ezhumattoor( John Mathew Thekkel) M.A.,Ph.d. The Plymouth Brethren movement was an independent work of the Holy Spirit, which is apparent from the fact that, in A. D. 1812 and 1820, letters were passed between a company of believers in Great Britain. The Brethren believe that they represent the true church established on the day of Pentecost. The two guiding principles of the movement were to be the breaking of bread every Lord’s Day, and ministry based upon the call of Christ rather than the ordination of men. They follow and obey the Scripture, refusing to follow human tradition and creed. Others call them Brethren, but they prefer to be called Christians. Doctrine and Practices The Brethren seek to assemble in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and to maintain the apostolic pattern and simplicity which marked the churches of the days of the apostles (Romans 12:4-8). We honor the Lord Jesus and worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24). The Church began with the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and is composed of all true believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. These believers are united to Him and to one another by the indwelling Spirit. This means that the Church, as a whole, is not an organization, but a living organism, known as the body of Christ. Every true child of God possesses eternal life, and being justified, sanctified, and sealed with the Holy Spirit, is safe and secure for all eternity. However, a Christian can, through sin, lose his fellowship, joy, power, testimony, and reward, thus incurring the Father’s chastisement. Relationship is eternal, being established by new birth; fellowship, however, is dependent upon obedience.

Who are the Plymouth Brethren? In the mid 1820's a group of Godly men began meeting together apart from their local churches to worship and break bread, and to study the Word together. They were not trying to start a movement of any kind, but were simply attempting to find spiritual food and fellowship. Eventually, their meetings spread and became a movement. One of the most notable groups was located at Plymouth; hence, the name "Plymouth Brethren." Today, there are hundreds of Brethren Assemblies scattered around the world. One key concept the Brethren hold to is that we accept no name that is not common to and inclusive of all believers worldwide. In other words, we do not hold to denominational names or man-made sects. We strive to hold to New Testament principals for holding and maintaining our meetings. We believe that the New Testament teaches that there is to be more than one man leading in a local church; therefore, our churches are always led by a group of elders as opposed to a pastor or minister. Another distinction of the Brethren is that we meet every Lord's day to break bread and thus remember the Lord until He comes. During this time no one individual is in charge of any kind of program, it is simply left to the Holy Spirit to move the brothers to lead in worshipping and remembering our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This is just a brief summary of some of the distinctives of the Plymouth Brethren in general. For more detailed information on the Plymouth Brethren and our history, please visit the

Open Brethren (OB) - the sect and principle by which the followers of George Mueller are known (which went off to form independent principles of gathering); KLC Brethren (Kelly-Lowe-Continentals) - a merger of these three division groups, which separately had earlier left the fellowship; Grant Brethren - a following of F.W. Grant; Raven Brethren - a following of F.E. Raven. Some other saints also went out from the mainline to form their own fellowship, who were smaller assembly groups; and, as stated already, many sub-divisions have formed out of all of the divisions. One can see the paper on notable divisions within the brethren movement by this writer for more information.

Some of the Brethren distinctives are foot washing, plainness of dress and the disavowal of worldly fashions, head coverings on women, anointing the sick, eschewing worldly amusements, refusing to take oaths, pacifism and refusal to go to war. As with the Amish and Mennonites, there is a general tendency for these European Brethren descendants to retain only the outward form of their past spirituality, and to be barren today of the new birth. MENNONITE BRETHREN . Anabaptists which trace their roots through the 16th century Reformation in Europe and beyond that to separatist Christian movements such as the Waldensians. Mennonite historian John Horsch made this connection: "As the author of the article 'Anabaptists' in the Encyclopedia Britannica points out, 'the continuity of a sect is to be traced in its principles.' Considered from this aspect, the continuity of the Waldensian denomination in the evangelical Anabaptists and Mennonites cannot be questioned. The two denominations represented a similar faith and practice. ... Indeed the rise of the Anabaptist movement is to be, at least indirectly, ascribed to Waldensian influences. Such is the opinion of a number of prominent historians, among them the late Professor Ernst Troeltsch of the University of Berlin, Germany" (
