VISION STATEMENT
  • The Moravian Church – Northern Province is a vital agent of reconciliation in a world yearning for the good news of Jesus Christ. We are an interconnected body of dynamic and growing churches embracing the diversity of all God’s creation. Our mission is listening, discerning and responding to the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of people in the places in which we minister. These servant churches, both formal and informal, are Christ-centered and are led by competent clergy and gifted laity who are equipped and empowered to embody the love of Jesus Christ through a life of faithful discipleship.
  • The Province and Districts exist to empower the congregations to pursue ministries in an ever-changing world, and remain open to new models for leadership and ministry so that the church is poised to reach out and respond to the issues facing God’s world. At all levels, locally and globally, the church cooperates with other Christian entities to proclaim Christ and witness to God’s redeeming action through Jesus Christ.

Moravian Church Unity Synod Held in Bethlehem, PA, USA
For the first time since 1957 Bethlehem, PA, was the host location of the Unity Synod of the Moravian Church. The Unity Synod took place August 7 through August 20, 2002, at Moravian College. This synod, or general business meeting, is held every 7 years at different locations throughout the world and will have representatives present from the 19 provinces of the Moravian Unity. Some of these provinces include Alaska, Czech Republic, Eastern West Indies, European Continental, Great Britain and Ireland, Honduras, Jamaica, Managua, Nicaragua, Southern Africa, Suriname, and Tanzania, just to name a few. Also included in the provincial list of attendees are the Northern and Southern Provinces of the Moravian Church in North America, headquartered in Bethlehem, PA, and Winston-Salem, NC. Other affiliated provinces include Costa Rica, Guyana, and Labrador. For a complete list of attendees, click here Rev. Burke Johnson, outgoing Provincial Elders' Conference President, Northern Province, emphasized the importance of this event by saying, "the leadership of our provinces has been looking forward to coming to Bethlehem for this meeting for several years, especially since it hasn't been held here since the mid nineteen fifties. The last Unity Synod was held in Tanzania in 1995."

What We Believe
Organization of the Province Church History A Brief Account of the Moravian Church, Southern Province ... Daily Text
Our Origins For more than four centuries the Moravian Church has proclaimed the gospel in all parts of the world. Its influence has far exceeded its numbers as it has cooperated with religious faiths on every continent. Proud of its heritage and firm in its faith, the Moravian Church ministers to people wherever they are. The name Moravian identifies that this historic church had its origin in ancient Bohemia and Moravia in what is present-day Czechoslovakia. In the mid-ninth century these countries converted to Christianity chiefly through the influence of two Greek Orthodox missionaries, Cyril and Methodius. They translated the Bible into the common language and introduced a national church ritual. In the centuries that followed, Bohemia and Moravia gradually fell under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of Rome, but some of the Czech people protested. Standard Bearer of Protestantism Actually the Moravian Church is recognized as the Standard Bearer of Protestantism. The church's first members were the forerunners of what became known as the Protestant Reformation. They were the followers of the great preacher and educator John Hus (1369-1415). Hus was dean of the philosophical faculty of the University of Prague and was twice elected Rector of the University.

A Short Introduction to the History, Customs and Practices of the Moravian Church by Herbert Spaugh Episcopus Fratrum
This introduction is being continually revised and updated by Dr. Worth Green. Most of the HTML links are active, but they are constantly being updated with the rest of the text and one or two may lead nowhere. Links ending in an " " lead off site. This material is posted so that interested readers may offer constructive criticism. Please send any suggestions you may have to: Editor@EverydayCounselor.com
The Name of the Church
Unitas Fratrum is the ancient name by which the Moravian Church was first known. It is a Latin phrase meaning, Unity of Brethren . World-wide, it is still our official name. We are called Moravians because the church got its start in Moravia and Bohemia The history of the Moravian Church is usually divided into two eras: 1) the time of the Ancient Unity which sprung to life in Moravia and Bohemia after the martyrdom of John Hus ; and 2) the time of the Renewed Church which flourished in Germany after a party of religious refugees found a safe haven on the estate of Count Zinzendorf The desire to spread the Gospel carried the Moravian Church literally "…around the world."
