Doctrines Mennonite doctrine is encapsulated in the following statements of faith: the Schleitheim Articles (1527), the Dordrecht Confession (1632), the Christian Fundamentals (1921), and the Mennonite Confession of Faith (1963). Like almost all Christian traditions, Mennonites believe in the Trinity and that Jesus Christ is the Word of God incarnate. The Bible is inspired by God and is the sole source of authority for Christians. Human beings are created in God's image but this image has been tarnished through disobedience and sin. It is through Jesus Christ that salvation from sin is offered. Jesus will return to judge all people and create a new heaven and a new earth.
The Mennonites have a number of doctrines that distinguish them from some other mainstream Christian traditions. They differ principally in their perception of the church and its relationship to the state, which is regarded as a secular institution. The church consists only of those who have accepted God's offer of salvation. They believe that no one should be coerced into joining the church or persecuted on account of their beliefs, for faith can only be a matter of personal choice. Only believing Christians can be baptised; infant baptism has no basis in the Bible. Baptism and the Lord's Supper are signs of God's grace. Mennonites practice the washing of feet following the example of Jesus' act of washing his disciples feet. This serves as a reminder of the need of personal cleansing from sin. Mennonites do not swear oaths and avoid all forms of violence.

Resolutions of The Germantown Mennonites; February 18, 1688
This is to the monthly meeting held at Richard Worrell's: If once these slaves (which they say are so wicked and stubborn men,) should join themselves fight for their freedom, and handel their masters and mistresses, as they did handel them before; will these masters and mistresses take the sword at hand and war against these poor slaves, like, as we are able to believe, some will not refuse to do? Or, have these poor negers not as much right to fight for their freedom, as you have to keep them slaves? Now consider well this thing, if it is good or bad. And in case you find it to be good to handel these blacks in that manner, we desire and require you hereby lovingly, that you may inform us herein, which at this time never was done, viz., that Christians have such a liberty to do so. To the end we shall be satisfied on this point, and satisfy likewise our good friends and acquaintances in our native country, to whom it is a terror, or fearful thing, that men should be handelled so in Pennsylvania. This is from our meeting at Germantown, held ye 18th of the 2d month, 1688, to be delivered to the monthly meeting at Richard Worrell's.

Filmmaker Ann Kennard explores the private world of the mennonites andthe intrepid founders of their community in southern Ontario.
    http://www.whitepinepictures.com/seeds/i/4/
The freedom to worship and practice distinct cultural values have lured many immigrants to Canada. Filmmaker Ann Kennard explores the private world of the Mennonites and the intrepid founders of their community in southern Ontario. Benjamin Eby crossed the Canadian border in 1807 in a horse cart, carrying a quilt stitched with ten thousand pockets. Each pocket contained an American silver dollar to buy off the mortgages on the 60,000 acres of land the Mennonites purchased in Waterloo county. Eby would go on to found the Mennonite community in St Jacob's, Ontario and be ordained as the first Mennonite bishop in Canada. He built the first Mennonite church, opened and taught at the first Mennonite one-room schoolhouse, bought the first printing press and distributed the first Mennonite newsletter. Far from being mired in the past, this fascinating documentary captures not only the Mennonite cultural, religious and community traditions but the voices of dissent and change, the conflict and struggle of a society in transition. In Mennonite schools today, only some children wear hats, plain clothes or long skirts. In the fields, one farmer uses a manual haying machine while another works with mechanized bailers and combines. Today nearly 50 different groups of Mennonites live in Ontario, fragmented according to different values and beliefs.

    Mennonites and the Flag
by Susan Mark Landis, Minister of Peace and Justice Mennonites have different ideas about the flag. Perhaps there are several issues involved:
    • The historical context of Mennonites and their relationship to the state
    • Where our freedom of religion originated
    • Mennonites' relationship to the flag
What follows are only very brief responses.
The Historical Context of Mennonites and Their Relationship to the State
Our confession of faith states that Mennonites first and foremost see the church as God's holy nation. "The only Christian nation is the church of Jesus Christ, made up of people from every tribe and nation, called to witness to God's glory." Because Mennonites put their citizenship and allegiance to God far ahead of citizenship of any earthly nation, they have often been persecuted during times of war when they refuse to join the military. Because we know that God's church is made up of people from every nation, we believe that God blesses each nation and doesn't play favorites. This is why some Mennonites hesitate to sing "God bless America." They want God to bless all nations. Mennonites began this denomination on the run from the government and many times through the years have found themselves opposed to their earthly government. Sometimes they have had good relations with their host country, but always there is an unease about how long this will last. Often the relationship sours over the issue of conscientious objection to war: when Mennonites weren't given this right, they often moved to another country.

Drive along the country roads of Pennsylvania and you will probably pass the familiar horse and buggy of the Amish. Large billboards will confirm in bright letters that you have most certainly entered Amish country and arrows will direct you to the nearest country store serving up homemade jams, pies, fruits, nuts and just about everything Amish. But although the Amish might have a monopoly on the affection of tourists in this country, they are not the only ‘plain people’ living within the United States. The Amish are actually an offshoot of the Mennonites one group of a large swath of religious conservatives collectively known as the Anabaptists. bodyOffer(27834) The Anabaptists first formed in Europe during the Reformation of the 16th century. Their radical beliefs in strict discipleship and the emulation of Christ’s purity in everyday life were viewed suspiciously by the Catholics and Protestants. And the Anabaptist’s distaste for violence in the bloody world of 16th century religion made them enemies of both. Like many other religious groups, the Anabaptists finally fled their German homelands to settle in a more peaceful America. But like any religious organization, various interpretations of the scriptures led to the formation of distinct Anabaptist groups that now include the Church of the Brethren, Brethren in Christ, Hutterites, the Amish, and the Mennonites. All of these groups are well represented in the States with the Mennonites being particularly strong in the farmlands stretching from Pennsylvania to Iowa.

W here do they come from? Why do their children look like that? Why are they so different? These are some of the intriguing questions many ask. What secrets in their past shaped them into becoming what now appears to be a people living in the past? In order to understand this, the dramatic and tragic history of the Anabaptists must be revealed. A Brief History Swiss Brethren Briefly speaking, the Anabaptist movement "officially" began in the sixteenth century. Although, Christians of similar theology and circumstances have existed since the third century, the sixteenth century Anabaptists were closest to the Waldensians in their beliefs. (The Waldensians originated, about 1160 A.D., in Lyons, France with Peter Waldo, after he discovered huge discrepancies between Scripture and the Roman Catholic Church's doctrines ). A wave of God's Spirit was already evident throughout Europe during the sixteenth century. However, the first sign of any stronghold amongst the populace was in Zurich, Switzerland, under the leadership of Konrad Grebel, a disciple of Ulrich Zwingli Zwingli had laid out for his Bible students a strong Scriptural foundation, putting emphasis against the hypocrisy of compromise. Because such was not founded on Scripture, he taught them against such ungodly Roman Catholic mandates as indulgences (money charged for prayer), worship of images, relics, and saints, the sacramental view in the mass, and enforced celibacy. However, when Grebel and Zwingli's other disciples took the next logical step, in actively "forsaking all"

    What Are Mennonites?
Mennonites are Christians, (who love Jesus, follow his teaching, live in the forgiveness he made possible, and experience the power he gives through the Holy Spirit to transform their lives). In particular, Mennonites derive from a part of the reformation known as Anabaptists or 'the radical reformation'. Discipleship, mutual support, following Jesus hard teaching on loving enemies and concern for justice and right living have been particularly important for Mennonites. Read about Dirk Willems , an Anabaptist who loved his enemy and paid with his life. In 1996 the Mennonite Church affirmed a new Confession of Faith from a Mennonite Perspective which is available on the web, or through Metanoia Book Service Mennonites take their name from a priest, Menno Simons , who spent much of the 16th century travelling the Netherlands, preaching, teaching and encouraging other Anabaptists, and by God's grace escaped arrest from both Protestant and Roman Catholic authorities. "Old Order Mennonite" is a generic term for Swiss-Pennsylvania Mennonite groups who dress plainly and reject modern technologies that other North Americans take for granted. They put the disciplined church community, rather than individual religious experience, at the center of Christian faith. Ordnungen (orders) comprise the rules and regulations of the church community. For further reference see Amos B. Hoover. "Old Order Mennonites, Pennsylvania." Mennonite Encyclopedia , V:654; and Sandra Cronk. "Ordnung (Order)." Mennonite Encyclopedia , V:662.
VIII-1 - Old Order Mennonites in Ontario
Old Order (Wisler horse and buggy) Mennonites are found in five major settlements in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and Ontario. They trace their origin to 1872, when bishop Jacob Wisler of Elkart, Indiana was expelled from the Old Mennonite Church because of his opposition to innovations (e.g. Sunday schools) and organized separate district conferences in Indiana and Ohio. This split was followed by the organization of affiliated district conferences in Ontario in 1889, in Pennsylvania in 1893, and in Virginia in 1901.
