KEMETIC YOGA AN ANCIENT ART FOR MODERN LIVING Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years in many cultures throughout the world. It is most commonly associated with the culture of India. A fact that is coming more into the common knowledge is that Africans in Kemp (Ancient Egypt) practiced Yoga many years before the evolution of the culture of India. KEMETIC Yoga is expressed in the artwork and spiritual writings found in the ancient tombs and temples. On wall paintings and sculptures we see figures in positions that we now know to be Yoga postures. In the ancient texts we are able to read about the principles and techniques of physical and spiritual perfection that the KEMETIC people aspired to. On my recent trip to Kemet (Egypt) I had the opportunity to meditate inside the King's chamber of the Great Pyramid and in some of the secret meditation chambers hidden within the walls and beneath the floors of the temples. It became obvious to me from these experiences that the ancient Kamites had a tremendously developed system and understanding of Yoga. In fact the Pyramids, Sphinx, temples and tombs are all symbolic representations of concepts found in Yogic philosophy. The funeral rites and creation stories depicted everywhere on the walls of temples and tombs reflect the ultimate aim of Yoga, which is balance, harmony, universal order and spiritual union with the Creator.

Kemetic Religion (a note) Bast comes from the Kemetic (or ancient Egyptian the ancient Egyptians themselves referred to their land as Kemet, Egypt or "Aigyptos" being a Greek word) religion, a beliefs system that for many years was traditionally typecast as polytheistic in nature. Recent (as of the middle of the 20th century) modern research has questioned this label, and the Egyptological community today is now vastly under the opinion that the Kemetic religion was, keeping with most indigenous African religions, "monolatrous" meaning one god who can take on multiple faces (the One and the Many). Some people question the categorization of ancient Egypt as a monolatry because it would seem to be so obviously polytheistic. People who purport that ancient Egyptian religion is polytheistic are actually half correct however , numerous references to deity in the singular (throughout many texts) and to priests priding themselves on knowing the "Names of Netjer" point toward more than just a polytheistic categorization of the religion, which is where the term monolatry comes into use. One God with multiple faces (called Names by the Kemetic Orthodox). Throughout the text of the essay, "Names" will be used in place of "gods" in an attempt to accomodate for the monolatrist viewpoint. Because Kemet was absorbed by the Roman Empire (which was polytheistic) and encountered by the Greeks before even that (who were also polytheistic), and because for over a thousand years the hieroglyphic language was lost, it is easy to see why it has been miscategorized. However, just as one could not fairly call the religion of Yoruba or the Hindu religion polytheistic, so also one would notwhen dealing with pre-Graeco-Roman Egyptdo the same with Kemetic religion. It is extremely important when studying ancient Egypt to differentiate between the time when Egypt was held by foreign powersthe Late Period onand when it was not. Culturally, religiously, and structurally, the differences are readily apparentenough so that Egypt may as well have been two different countries entirely: the land of the native Pharaohs, and the land of the foreign rulers.

Origin
Isis, or Aset, as the original, ancient Egyptian name seem to have been, goes far back into history. I will from now on use the Kemetic Name of Aset instead of the Greek name Isis.
The Name of Aset
Aset, or Ay-see as it is believed to have been, is written with the hieroglyph for "throne" or "seat". This indicates that She was seen as the one Who supported the king and from which he rose. This was the case in early African cultures and is still to some degree today. So Aset can be taken to mean "The Seat/Throne" of the king. Thereby she was the KingĀ“s symbolical mother and as such of special significance to him, but in these early days she was not a great mother goddess whom everyone turned to.

Great of Heka
Aset is often called 'Great of Heka'. This stems from a myth in which Aset tricked the sungod Ra into telling her his secret name. In ancient Egypt words and writing were considered sacred, a gift of the gods. Therefore they were powerful and 'magic', whether uttered or written. He who knew the name of someone or something also knew the true meaning of the thing or the person and thus gained power over it. This is often the case with African religions even today. http://www.per-sekhmet.org/about/kemetic.html
What is the Kemetic Religion?
Per Sekhmet is part of a sisterhood of temples, called Per Ankh, that is engaged in the contemporary practice of the traditional religion of Ancient Egypt, its culture, its belief systems, and its spirituality. There are different views of what exactly is the Kemetic religion. The following is from the view of Per Ankh, which might be different from other Kemetic groups. The Kemetic Religion As the Ancient Egyptian religion is one of the traditional religions of Africa. we share with these great faiths the style and approach to religious experience, rituals, and life. However, as the historical continuity with our ancestors has been broken, we share with reconstructionist religions in utilizing scholarly methods to re-create the structures, rites, and practices; our aim is to literally preserve rituals as fully as possible. While trying to keep our religion as closely to the religion of Ancient Egypt, we use methods of religious studies, philosophy, and theology to apply what we have learned to contemporary times. At the same time, we are a living religion that recognizes that growth and change is a part of healthy religious evolution. Such questions are taken seriously and discerned by the priesthood of individual temples, which, like the temples of Ancient times, might come to differing conclusions.

    What's a meryBast?
For the Kemetic Orthodox, to name something is to give it the gift of becoming. It follows then that, in my religion, I was given two names for the two major points of my becoming: one as a Shemsu (a full convert) and as an Imakhu (a priest). My Shemsu name is meryBast ("Whom Bast Loves"), which my handy dandy Egyptologists have told me is a phrase rather than a name. This is rather convenient, because my Imakhu name Sekhauesmutes or "She Remembers Her Mother" completes the phrase that is my Shemsu name (neat, hunh?). History and Lineage
I am Hemet-Netjer (Servant of God) meryBast Sekhauesmutes, daughter and servant of Bast, beloved of Ra. To my congregation I am known as Kai-Imakhu meryBast (or K.I. meryBast). I can trace my ordination and instruction back to the head of my religion: Her Holiness, Hekatawy Sekhenet-Ma'at-Ra. March, 1997 Joined the House of Netjer. August, 1998 First person ordained at First Annual New Year retreat. April, 1999
