THE KARAIMS
Self-designation and origin . The people call themselves karai (pl. karailar ). The designation has been linked to an Old Hebrew verbal noun qáráím 'readers' (of Holy Scripture), which would indicate that the members of this small Turkic group are adherents of a minor branch of Judaism. In an effort to distinguish between the Karaim and the Karaite , some scholars use the designation ' East European Karaim ' for the former. In some sources the Karaim have been recorded as the Tatars (this is sometimes used by the Karaim themselves), or as the Kirghiz or the Jews. It is important to note that as recently as the beginning of this century literate Karaim priests regarded Hebrew as the Karaim language. Hebrew is the language in which sacred texts were written and it is still used during services of the sect in Egypt, Turkey and Israel. Religion has played an important part in forming the Karaim people. Since the 8th century the Karaims have belonged to a sect of Karaism initiated by Anan ben David. This is a reformed Judaism which defends the religious doctrine as it is written in the Bible and rejects the Talmud, the oral tradition. From the 8th to the 10th centuries the Karaims were subjected to the rule of Khazar Kagan. It is recorded in the 13th century that the Karaim congregation practised in Solkhat, the capital city of the Crimean Tatars. In the 14th to the 16th centuries a small number of the Karaim people from Middle Eastern countries were absorbed by the Crimean Karaim.

DoveNET ... What Karaite Jews Say About October 22, 1844 TESTING THE SDA MYTH BY REALITY Seventh-day Adventists agree that, according to Scripture, the Day of Atonement is the tenth day of the seventh Jewish month: "This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month you must deny yourselves and not do any workwhether native-born or an alien living among youbecause on this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the LORD, you will be clean from all your sins." Leviticus 16:29-30 (NIV) Seventh-day Adventists also agree that any Jewish calendar will indicate the seventh Jewish month is the month Jews call "Tishri." To help the reader the twelve Jewish months are listed below, along with the number of days each month has and it's approximate counterpart in the Gregorian calendar: 1. Nisan (30 days) - March/April
2. Iyyar (29 days) - April/May
3. Sivan (30 days) - May/June
4. Tammuz (29 days) - June/July
5. Av (30 days) - July/August
6. Elul (29 days) - August/September

http://www.christiancommunitychurch.us/dovenet/sdamarz.htm
DoveNET ... Karaite Leader Affirms Day of Atonement in 1844 The following letter was sent by Yousef Ibrahim Marzouk, head of the Karaites in Cairo Egypt (back in 1939) to a Mr. C. L. Price in answer to a question regarding the date the Karaites celebrated as the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur/10th of Tishri) in 1844. Portions of this letter were printed in the May-June, 1941, No. 3 issue of The Gathering Call" by E. S. Ballenger. The reason Mr. Price asked this question in the first place is because Seventh-day Adventists claim the Karaite Jews celebrated the Day of Atonement on October 22, 1844. As Marzouk's letter clearly shows, the SDA claim is wrong. Both the Rabinnical Jews, and the Karaite Jews celebrated the Day of Atonement on September 23 in 1844: This document and it's date of September 23, 1844 has been verified by modern Karaites, Jewish calendar calculations, and even dates on the headstones in Jewish cemeteries. It is simply beyond question. Having been forced to admit that both the Karaite and Rabbinical Jews celebrated the Day of Atonement on September 23, 1844, Seventh-day Adventist scholars are now claiming the Babylonian calendar as the source of the October 22 date. However, this is simply a smoke screen to throw readers off track. The real problem Seventh-day Adventists have is this: Ellen White, under "Divine inspiration," affirmed S. S. Snow's claim that the Day of Atonement (10th of Tishri) in 1844 occurred on October 22. S. S. Snow claimed he got that date from the "old Karaite Jewish calendar." Neither Ellen White nor S. S. Snow ever referred to a

Joseph Solomon Lutski's 'Epistle of Israel's Deliverance
Phillip E. Miller This study contains two interrelated parts. In Part One, Miller surveys the history of the Russian Karaites, examines theories about their origins, and discusses their fate from the late 18th century until the present. Focusing on the events which led to the creation of the Karaite Religious Consistory in 1837, Miller shows how the Karaites, motivated by economic and political concerns, successfully dissociated themselves from the Rabbinate Russian Jews. This separatism "resulted in a schism within Judaism unprecedented since the rise of Christianity."
The central character in Miller's study is Simhah Babovich who in 1827 traveled to St. Petersburg on behalf of the Karaite community to petition the tsar. Accompanying him on the journey was Joseph Solomon ben Moses Lutski, whose chronicle of the mission, the Iggeret teshu'at Yisrael is reprinted here in Part Two as an annotated Hebrew text with English translation.

49. Day Of Atonement Of The Karaite Jews In 1844

Day of Atonement of the Karaite Jews in 1844
by Robert K. Sanders
The Karaite Jews has now confirmed the "Day of Atonement" in 1844 was Late September and not Late October. Their research is presented further down in this topic, but first we need to preface why this is important. Why is the Karaite date of the Day of Atonement important?
Seventh-day Adventists claim that in 1844, a very small Jewish sect called the "Karaites," used a different calendar and thus celebrated the Day of Atonement (10th of Tishri) on October 22, one month later than the Rabbinical/Orthodox Jews who did so on September 23. Thus the entire Seventh-day Adventist teaching regarding the 2300 days of Daniel 8:14, the Investigative Judgment, the Great Disappointment, and Jesus' entrance into the Most Holy Place, hinges only on the words of their prophet Ellen White and on their claim Karaites celebrated the Day of Atonement on October 22 in 1844. If either of these assertions is incorrect, then Seventh-day Adventism is in serious theological trouble. The Rabbinical Day of Atonement in 1844 is easy to for anyone to prove from Jewish sources, that it came on September 23, 1844.

Early Karaite Grammatical Texts
Geoffrey Khan
This book contains an edition, translation, and analysis of three hitherto unpublished Hebrew grammatical works from the Middle Ages. They are among the earliest grammatical studies of the biblical Hebrew language. The texts were all written by Karaite Jews, who were a dynamic intellectual force in the Middle Ages and made important contributions to the development of the disciplines of Hebrew grammar and biblical exegesis. These Karaite grammatical texts fell into oblivion in the later Middle Ages and the Hebrew grammatical tradition of the Spanish school of grammarians became dominant, which formed the basis of our modern grammar books of biblical Hebrew.

Abraham Firkovich was the central figure of the Karaite National Movement in nineteenth century Russia and the most important collector of Karaite manuscripts. He was born in Lutsk, Poland, but was active mainly in the Crimea. Such local leaders sponsored him as Simha Babovich, who took him in 1830 on a visit to the Holy Land. Firkovich collected in Jerusalem, Hebron and Cairo numerous old manuscripts. In the years 1831 1832 he transferred his collecting activity to Istanbul, and 1839 1840 to the Crimea (especially ChufutKale, which was being left by its Karaite inhabitants). Further he copied old Karaite tombstone inscriptions in the Crimea and Caucasus, many of which he published in his "Avnei Zikkaron" (1872). In 1863 - 15 he returned to Palestine and Egypt and obtained, now that he was old, experienced and wealthy, perhaps the most important part of his vast collection of over 15,000 manuscripts. His discoveries stimulated wide interest. S. Pinsker based his "Likkutei Kadmoniyot" mainly on material supplied by him. H.Graetz and J. First, too, used it uncritically. Firkovich's thesis was that the forefathers of the Karaites had come to the Crimea in the seventh century BCE and thus could not have been involved in the crucifixion of Jesus. Nor had they any connection with the preparation of the Talmud. He believed the Khazars to have been Karaites. His views were obviously politically motivated and were intended to give a "scientific" underpinning to the Karaite National Movement. When in 1839 the governor general of the Crimea, Voronzow, addressed six basic questions on the origins of the Karaites to Babovich, Firkovich was commissioned to answer them. The Karaite leadership used his opinions and writings also otherwise in its endeavors to distance itself from Judaism and receive full civil rights for all Karaites from the Russian authorities.

Subject Headings for a Karaite Calendar A good guide for deciding what subjects to use for the calendar put out by a Karaite group would be the scope note for the heading Religious calendar (SH85-112615). The text of this note reads: Here are entered texts and comparative studies of calendars of ritual observances for particular days.
* Works on the Christian liturgical calendar are entered under Church calendar.
* Works on the ritual calendars of other religions are entered here with the subdivision for the name of the religion, e.g.
Religious calendarsGreek religion.
* Works on the Islamic [Jewish, etc.] calendar from the viewpoint of chronological reckoning are entered under
Calendar, Islamic [Jewish, etc.] In accord with this note, if the focus of the work is on the religious observance for particular days or if the work contains liturgical readings for these days, then the appropriate first heading would be Religious calendarsKaraites.
This heading is currently authorized by the multiple heading Religious calendarsGreek religion [Judaism, etc.]
(SH85-112617). It could be that a work with this heading would not list all the days of the year but only particular festivals.

Case in point: the Samaritans and the Karaites, two ancient Jewish sects that each claimed to be the sole legitimate interpreters of biblical tradition. The Jewish Theological Seminary, will offer a rare glimpse of these groups, both of which survive to this day, in Scripture and Schism: Samaritan and Karaite Treasures from the JTS Library, beginning on December 14 and running through April 2001. Displayed here, for the first time in memory, are medieval manuscripts, early printed books, broadsides and assorted memorabilia, including letters dating from the medieval period originally unearthed a century ago by Solomon Schechter in his discovery of the Cairo Geniza. In conjunction with the exhibition, which will be on view on the library’s first and fifth floors, will be lectures, ethnographic films and recordings of Samaritan and Karaite music.

Karaite Beginnings
Judeo-Arabic Paraphrase of Genesis and Exodus with Commentary
Japheth ben Eli, Egypt, seventeenth century (?)
ms. 3420 The Karaites are those Jews who reject the Talmud and instead advocate reliance on the Hebrew Bible as the source of all Jewish law. The word Karaite means "scripturalist" and translates a variety of Hebrew and Arabic terms with roughly the same meaning: benei mikra baalei mikra kara and karai . Although Karaism had its beginnings in the eighth century CE, these terms were not coined until a century or two later. Karaism came onto the scene at a time when the Talmud had been completed but had not yet taken root in the Jewish communities throughout the Diaspora. The Geonim, the heads of the Jewish academies in Babylonia (Iraq) and Palestine, saw themselves as the vital link between the Talmud's wide-ranging discourses and a unified set of Jewish precepts and practices. They consequently spread their teachings to the Jewish diasporas. No sooner had the Geonim begun their work than the Islamic conquests brought nearly the entire Jewish world into a single cultural and linguistic sphere for the first time since Alexander the Great. The cultural unity of Islamic rule eased the promulgation of rabbinic law. At the same time, the new unity was not without its detractors, and the very expansion of empire that helped the spread of geonic authority and rabbinic law also strengthened the forces of divergence. As Karaism began to spread, it shifted westward to Jerusalem, where it was freer to pursue its own religious and intellectual ideals unimpeded.
