Relevant and Interesting Information
Shamash
This will connect you to the fullest repository of online Jewish-related information in the world. (I "borrowed" my menorah from their site.) One great resource here is the Jewish FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page, with quick answers to many of your most basic questions. Check here first for answers to most questions about Judaism that might come to mind first. The esoteric stuff needs a little more research work, but this site's "Judaism and Jewish Resources Page" is a great place to start. There is more information here than you could possibly read, so just follow your interests and be curious. Anything that catches your fancy can be turned into a "bookmark" for later perusal. You can print material that you want to have in hardcopy. Some stuff is quite long, so be careful.

You are in: Front Page Sitemap Religions of the World Judaism Judaism Introduction Judaism is the oldest of the world's four great monotheistic religions. It's also the smallest, with only about 12 million followers around the world.
The Holocaust of the 1930s and and 40s transformed Jewish demographics-if the Holocaust had not occurred there would now be between 25 and 35 million Jews in the world, and far more of them would live in Europe.
Most Jewish people in the world live in Israel or the USA. The largest European Jewish community is in France. There are 285,000 Jews living in the UK. Only 85,000 of them are active in their faith, but virtually all the others still regard being Jewish as a vital part of their identity.

Tanakh (Hebrew Bible)
The Tanakh is the Hebrew Bible, the quintessential sacred text. The first five books of this comprise the Torah (or Pentateuch), the core sacred writings of the ancient Jews, traditionally written by Moses under divine inspiration. Sacred-texts archives both Hebrew and English versions of the Tanakh. Tanakh (Hebrew Bible): transliteration without vowels

Tanakh (English Translation)

The text of the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation.
Talmud
The Babylonian Talmud Translated by M.L. Rodkinson [1918]
This massive ten volume abridgement of the Talmud, the Jewish compendium of law and tradition, is the only extensive public domain translation. It is presented for the first time anywhere on the Internet at sacred-texts.com. Sayings of the Jewish Fathers (Pirqe Aboth) Translated by Charles Taylor [1897] This is a beautiful extract from the Talmud, which has been used as liturgy. Devoted to ethics with some mystical touches, the Pirqe Aboth is distinguished for its transparency and simplicity. This was one of the first English translations in modern times of any portion of the Talmud.

76. Neveh Shalom - Portland Oregon
A shul affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative judaism (USCJ).
http://www.nevehshalom.org/
W We strive to serve Judaism and our members through worship service, Jewish education for children and adults, social and cultural activities, special experiences for all ages and life cycle ceremonies. N eveh Shalom was formed by the merger of two existing Conservative congregations in 1961. One of those original synagogues (Ahavai Shalom) was founded in 1869 and the other (Neveh Zedek) in 1895. We are the second oldest Jewish congregation in the Pacific Northwest and the oldest Conservative congregation on the West Coast. This history and longevity establishes for our membership a sense of respect for our traditions at the same time as we encourage new concepts and innovations. We are a multi-generational congregation of nearly 1,000 family units. Our programs range from a bi-weekly Tot Shabbat service to Senior Citizen events. Our building was built in 1961 and is situated in residential southwest Portland on property surrounded by trees, reflective of our appreciation of the beauty that is Oregon. Religious services are led by our Rabbi, Daniel Isaak, and Rabbi Shosana Dworsky, and our Cantor, Linda Shivers. Our Rabbi Emeritus, Joshua Stampfer, also actively participates in the ritual observance of our congregation. There is a full array of regularly scheduled services; please check the current calendar for details.
